4 Port Router options 1gbps WAN

Hello,

We've moved to a new cookie cutter rental and the NBN box is in the shed with 3 Lan ports (kitchen, living and master bedroom) I bought an Asus ROG GT-AX11000 which currently is in the kitchen and covers the whole house with no issue but I want to put a NAS/Server in one room and connect consoles direct to LAN because it's their.

This means I need a router in the shed to sit between the NBN Modem and 3 Lan ports. We have FTTP and the 1,000 mpbs plan so needs to be able to handle routing that without an issue. Not sure if I should go with another Asus just a cheaper model or unifi edge (no other ubiquiti gear at this site) or another cheaper option.

Looking around the usual suspects, scorptec, centrecom etc seems really hard to buy a non-wifi device these days

Ubiquity EdgeRouter-X it's an excellent router, not very expensive and will give you giga LAN, and up to 300-400Mbps wan

If you really need giga wan, you can go with ubiquity EdgeRouter-4. More expensive but can do giga wan

  • You can get another Asus router and have the NBN modem connect to that via Ethernet which can then use the LAN ports on the router to connect all three LAN ports in the house to the internet. Most routers from the last few year would have 1Gbps ports at a minimum so as long as you don’t get something too old it should be fine for the 1,000 Mbps plan you have. Most recent Asus routers have the option for AiMesh mode when using multiple Asus routers which basically allows you to create a mesh system around your home. With this option, you could have the Asus router in the garage be your ‘main’ router and have the GT-AX11000 in the kitchen be a ‘satellite’ router. You don’t necessarily have to go with Asus for this router in the garage, you can use a spare one you may have – you would just need to set it up with the GT-AX11000 appropriately to make you don’t have DHCP/double NAT issues. I only suggested another Asus router initially because these settings are a bit more easier for the router software to set for you in AiMesh mode depending on how comfortable you are with tinkering/optimising your network. You don’t necessarily have to buy a non-wifi device, most routers give you the option of being able to turn the wifi radios off manually if you don’t need to use them.

  • Why not just use a gigabit switch with the existing router? I dont see the need for the second router.

    • A lot of routers have gigabit ports, but don't have anywhere near the grunt to actually handle a 1,000 mpbs internet connection.

So, it comes down to whether you're fussed about being able to use what you're paying for… if you've got a household full of kids all trying to stream netflix, then a normal consumer router is gonna choke well before the NBN connection hits 1000mbps.

My HFC NBN won't go to 1000mbps yet… but I was still very tempted by some of the reviews of the EdgeRouter-4.
