Samsung Galaxy 3 Watch - Parallel Import Version - Should I Buy or Avoid?

ETA: Thanks all. I'll go with an Apple watch and look for a leather band to add to it.

Hi

I'm looking to buy this Galaxy 3 watch for my mum for mother's day. She currently has a cheap smart watch but wants one with a leather band. She likes the look of this one. I like the fall protection (yes, I mean DETECTION!) feature as she's had a few falls lately. She has an iphone, but I assume this watch can still work with the iphone. (She won't use a lot of features - likely just sms notifications, counting her steps, monitoring heart rate.)

I realise this is a parallel import hence it being 1/2 the price of the one from Samsung direct. Apart from warranty issues, is there anything else I should know before buying this one instead of the local version? I much prefer this $300 price tag!!

Thanks all!

  • Why on earth would you get a watch 3 at that price when you can get a watch 4 for around the same price (and in some cases cheaper) ?

  • I like the fall protection feature…

I assume you mean "fall detection feature". A watch will not protect the wearer from falling.

Also, watch 3 uses the old samsung Tizen OS which has been discontinued. I don't believe you can get galaxy 3 watch directly from Samsung Australia anymore.

If she is using iPhone, you should consider the Apple watch. You will get more out of it.

Please note the new galaxy watch 4 does not appear to be compatible with iOS. So please check before ordering.

    • Watch 4 is cheaper (but no iPhone support)
    • OK, Watch 3 supports iOS, but it's an discontinued product and Samsung will not update their iOS app anymore
    • Good luck buying from Kogan

    Get apple watch SE instead.

I believe Samsung Pay, etc, won't work here on a parallel import.

  • I got the GW1 from Kogan (can't justify the GW4 when they had this for $164 delivered). Out of the box Samsung Pay would not install or appear as an option but I found a guide online to get it installed and it worked until Samsung Pay detected root on my phone.

  • Apple watch if using iPhone as Apple blocks any other watch being used to its full potential.
As long as you know Apple watch needs charging daily if not more .
