One thing I've been noticing recently is a lot more of these chocolate/etc stouts, instead of being fermented with cocoa nibs, coconut, etc….they're just adding flavour/syrups afterwards. While it's a stronger taste, some are sickly sweet, and really don't taste at all like a stout.

    • thank you, exactly this "sickly sweet". Stout use to be my go to beer at the end of the night, cant stand most of the new brews as they taste like a very sweet desert and not in a good way.

      • Agree, not a fan of dessert stouts Give me a nice barrel aged stout and I'm happy.

  • I've tried the Moon Dog Timothy Tamothy Slamothy, which despite the great name I found it not chocolatey enough, so more of a standard porter/slight biscuit taste, and the Golden Stout Time, which has an awesome biscuit/caramel taste, very reminiscent of a Golden Gay Time, but the beer itself lacks body in comparison.

For anyone looking for a really big hit of chocolate in their stout, I'd recommend Eggster by Bridge Road Brewing, which is like the old Holgate Temptress on steroids!

Yes, I am a fan of dessert stouts!

I wasn't a fan of the Timothy Tamothy either. Mostly that it was too generic and didn't have what the label promised.

    • Tried any of the others? Never heard of the rest…(edit, sorry just re-read your comment, and just realised you had listed the ones you have tried)

      Anyone else tried any others?

    • T-bone’s Choc Milk Stout is one of my all time favourites, would definitely recommend if you haven’t tried it - bonus points for being a local Tassie brewery too!

  • FWIW, ratings on untapp'd:

3.86 Sauce Brewing - Egg Hunt Choc Stout 6%
3.64 Jervis Bay Brewing Co - Eggcellent Street Choc Milk Nitro Stout 5.4%
3.65 Moon Dog - Timothy Tamothy Slamothy Caramel Chocolate Biscuit Milk Stout 6.5%
3.45 Hope Brewery - White Chocolate Porter 6.5%
3.86 The Coastal Brewing Co - Milk Chocolate Orange Stout 5.0%
4.02 Big Shed - Golden Stout Time 5.4%

    • Totally forgot about the last sixer I bought (life got in the way and I never got around to drinking any of them!):

Looks like I took a bit of a flyer on that Yeastie Boys one…looking up the reviews now, it seems like an extremely divisive one! :)

  • Thanks OP, will give it a shot!
