CPU in a Black Box, Unsealed

Hi ozber,

I recently bought a AMD 5600x processor from Harris Technology eBay from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/689634

It came in a black box and no seal anywhere to be seen. I wonder if this is normal with AMD?

I read some comment on reddit saying a black box is normal if is from a distributor, but should have a sticker sealing the box.

Just want to make sure I am not getting a refurb unit…

EDIT:

Got it. OEM = Tray. Thank you all for your response.

  • No such thing as refurb CPU, only new or used. It's likely a tray CPU where they buy in bulk non-retail boxed.

Looking at the listing, while it does state "OEM" in title, it also clearly shows a retail box in description. I wouldn't be happy with that and would demand a return personally.

I would not expect layperson to know what an OEM chip is and should really be clarified in description or condition that's it's an open non-retail boxed item. That's what others do. Maybe it takes a return or two for them to enact that change.

Looks like you did not read the ebay description as it has OEM in it.

OEM is for manufacturers and is normally from a tray or is in plain packaging as it is not designed to be sold to end users.

if its anything like the black box on airplanes i would say you are good, those things can cop a beating while keeping the contents inside safe

nothing more than a thin as cardboard really..

  • AMD and Intel sell CPU's in 2 formats https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000…

    • Boxed (pretty packaging). Comes with a quote unquote "free" heatsink.

    • Tray (literally a tray of CPU's, like a plastic caddy)

If you're buying an OEM processor that means you're buying one of the tray CPU's and you won't get any printed packaging or a CPU cooler. There is no sealed box with a tamper evident security label.

You may also not get direct warranty support from Intel or AMD. Or, the warranty is a little shorter in length.

it is in the title of the deal "AMD Ryzen 5 5600X OEM CPU"
OEM = Tray, I am not sure about warranty directly from AMD
Retail = Boxed, warranty with AMD

Should have paid the extra $8 like i said in the first post of that deal. I tried to tell you shrug

  • OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer,

They are 'meant' to be used by "Original Equipment Manufacturer" to manufacturer the final product before sold to end user.

For example OEM CPU is 'meant' to be sold to system integrator (Computer Store), and the store will use it to assemble a PC, and sell the PC to you.

since AMD/Intel don't strictly force 'OEM' not to be sold to end user, it is fine for store to sell it to you as-is.

OEM in consumer PC industry basically means "Item come without individual packaging"

Can you actually refurb a CPU?

    • idk, maybe slap a used cpu in a box call it refurb?
