Leatherman or Victorinox, Which Do You Prefer?

Hi all

I need some advice as I am looking to downsize my collection of knives to purchase other stuff I need. For context I am not a tradie, have more than enough tools already and generally carry my swiss champ in my work bag which comes in handy for all sorts of odd occasions.

Victorinox I have

  • White Christmas sportsman
  • Swiss army nail clip
  • Swiss champ in red leather pouch
  • Swiss card (invaluable this stays)

Leatherman I have

  • Charge plus with bit kit, bit extender and extra screwdriver bits
  • Micra
  • Squirt (PS4)
  • Juice (CS3)
  • Style (PS)

Which ones would you keep and overall, which brand do you prefer?

    What no wave plus??

    • Basically same as the charge, but the charge has a hook end on the saw which is good for cutting boxes or straps.

  • I have the Victorinox Explorer, Classic and a Leatherman. Like them all so keeping. Classic is good for travel. Explorer for light, every day use and Leatherman for heavier use. Leatherman is good for the locking blade which the Explorer does not have - risk of the blades / saw closing on your fingers.

  • Each has their place but if I had to choose only one brand it'd be Victorinox as the only thing Leatherman really has over a SAK is pliers and with things like the pocket size Knipex Cobra XS now available that's an easy feature to replace.

  • Knife-less Rebar. Can take it anywhere and really never had much use for the knife part of these multi tools that would make me give up the carry it anywhere that the knife-less version gives me the option to do.

My most used is the S2 Juice. It has decent tool set and is relatively light. The full size leatherman tools are just to bulky and heavy for edc.

I never really saw the appeal of the Victorinox tools, and was puzzled why they have such a strong following. I guess the fact they are so compact could be a big selling point.

For me, the softer steel they use, the lack of locking, the difficulty of opening some of the tools and a generally less "robust feel" than the Leathermans are all down sides for the Victorinox tools.

  • Victorinox is better designed but I use my Leatherman Wave+ more. It's more useful/practical.

  • I just broke the pliers on my Wave less than an hour ago.

      They’ll fix it under warranty

Source: I broke the pliers on my wave plus

      • Thanks, I’ll fill out a warranty claim and see how it goes.

They'll probably replace it with a new one. Broke the screwdriver on my Wingman a few years ago. Got a new one.

      • Haha, I also broke the screwdriver but it was the eyeglass one and a couple of years ago.

Tough to say without more of an idea of your use cases.

Personally I carry a Leatherman Skeletool, it gives me everything I need or am likely to.

I also carry a small one-piece multitool like a Nite-Ize Doohickey or Gerber Shard for those times where the Leatherman feels like overkill.

If the Victorinox tools cover what you need they're a good pocket friendly form factor, but I feel as though Leatherman is the more robust option.

  • Are you Dwight Schrute? Why do you need so many multitools? I only have one in my bag, another in the car, and one at home; and could probably even downsize to two

    • Well I found the swisschamp, got the nail clip and charge plus as gifts and the other 4 leatherman I got on a closing down sale of an online store, basically worked out to buy one get one free. Swiss card I got for my wife who was pissed of at me when she opened it, now is thankful she has it.

  • Aldi multi-tool. https://offers.kd2.org/en/au/aldi/pbdHP/

I subscribe to the Sam Vimes Boots Theory.

  • i have both, but i had victorinox first and i use it the most. the one i've had is 10 years old, the knife needs a sharpen, the scissor & plier springs have broken (though they look to be easily replaceable if i can get a new spring) and i've lost the tweezers and the toothpick, but it's held up well. ever since i was a kid i've had swiss army knives, never broken one (apart from the springs after about 10 years of use on 1 set) but i have lost a few of them.

    • My oldest is about 35 years. The springs, tweezers, toothpicks and other accessories are all available as spares from Victorinox resellers. Just make sure you buy genuine as I've had aftermarket and while it fit, it just didn't work properly as the spring would deflect off to the side rather than remain in line.
