Cool Exhaust Popping Sound?

Seems like it is the cool factor amongst small engine with forced induction. Car manufacturers are doing it on purpose, but why?

Such cracking/popping/farting noise is usually due to incorrect fuel/oxygen mix (an issue with the car in case someone don't know what it means).

Noted the Yaris GR doesn't have much of it, rather exotic mechanical sound like the old fashion JDMs https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rFjA1bxr3DE

anti lag system to keep turbo spooling

    yes, many are fakes

    • Yes, aware… But bone stock Merc, VW, Bimmer, and Hundai? Doubt it.

i30N exhaust sound is embarrassing IMHO
    M2 comp note is cringey

  • yeah seriously getting annoying, Golfs are the worst, sound like a broken tractor

    • It's not just the golfs.. it's all cars with the DSGs… mine does it when I push it a little harder.

Stock tends not to do it but aftermarket tunes often offer low/medium/high levels of burble/popping/obnoxiousness (depending on your preferred term for it).

    • Fart.

The equivalent of an aftermarket BOV.

You answered your own question in the first line, their customers for those specific cars think it's cool.

  • Such cracking/popping/farting noise

Petrol heads call it music. Manufacturers try to please car enthusiasts.

  • It's over compensation for having a pissy little engine.

    • Over compensating for having something else that is little

My understanding is it's excess fuel going into the exhaust system and gets ignited.
Older cars get tuned for it and some newer cars have it factory tuned.
My i30N did it stock, I thought it was cool since it was my first hot hatch but I don't regularly punch it to set it off.

  • The buyer gets what the buyer wants, much like tuners are now deliberately making their tunes pop and crackle on overrun.

  • Its done on purpose to make the car more engaging and entertaining. Got noting to do with turbo engines or DSG's it just the car computer spitting out extra fuel that isn't burnt in the combustion cycle that pops in the exhaust.

My old school V8 commodore does it when on overrun when driven sportily.

The proper rally GR Yaris pops and cracks like crazy but thats how its designed to run.

I think it was cool but its a little played out now.

  • You can do it with a camshaft
