Winter Sports Insurance by-The-Day - Does It Exist?

Travel insurance for a 3 week trip to Canada nearly doubles when I add the optional winter sports insurance.

I only intend to do a couple of days on local ski hills if time and weather permits, so paying for a full 21 days of coverage seems like a big waste.

If I rent a car for 3 days, then I can buy insurance just for those 3 days, so I was wondering if there are similar products for winter sports.

I have looked quite hard but cannot find anything, but maybe someone here knows?

that's like saying you get car insurance for 2 weeks and only want roadside assistance on 3 days.

      No, you misunderstand.

If I am in Canada and rent a car for one day, then I can buy one day’s worth of insurance for that particular day. If I have an accident on that day, then I am covered, otherwise not.

If I do that on 3 separate days, then I pay 3 days premium for 3 days coverage.

So I am not trying to pay 3 days premium for 21 days coverage, but I am trying to avoid paying 21 days premium for 3 days coverage.

Although I could buy a full 21 days insurance, I am not forced to.

  • I cant remember for Canada but many European resorts can provide insurance added onto each day ticket so you only pay for when you ski. Maybe check the Canadian resort website to see if they offer the same.

adding ski insurance was really cheap when i went to japan

    • Went from 500 to 900 for me…

  • Just get a separate travel insurance policy for the couple of days

    • The problem is if you have a serious accident and end up in hospital. You'll try and claim on both policies and get stuck.

      • Why would you try and claim on both?

        • because you'll end up in hospital, and miss the plane home

  • From my experience the ski hills in Canada provide rescue and first aid as part of your ticket price (which would be the "insurance" people buy on the spot at resorts in most countries)

Check your PDS and the details from where you want to ski, but it might be that you don't need it. Not sure what happens if you break a leg and need an extended hospital stay, for example, but the airlifting out should be included.

Or, as someone mentioned, just get an extra policy for the 2-3 days you need it.
