Tree Removal - Large Eucalyptus X 2

Hi, has anyone recently had large trees completely removed (incl stump grinding)? What was the cost?

We are considering buying a small block which has 2 very large eucalypts (approx 20/25m tall, straight trunks) smack bang in the middle of the block. As much as we'd like the trees to remain, nothing can be built on the block unless they are taken down.

Part of the negotiation process includes whether or not we remove the trees, or they remove the trees.

Block is flat, no nearby structures and access is very good. Understand there might be permits etc but just trying to guage ball-park costs at this point.

  • ~4000AUD per tree I think. Not sure if you can negotiate for a lower price but I am interested to know what was the best price you got and from whom.

  • It would probably be helpful if more detailed information was provided, such as location (suburb, town, etc.), maybe the council the land is in, etc.

    • Country NSW, small town so not going to elaborate. Word travels fast.

Fair enough, but you probably only want info from others that also live in small NSW towns.

Keep the trees and incorporate as part of house design with atrium

  • Let them remove the trees.

If your local council is Green they may refuse to let you remove the trees and fine you heavily if you do.

If they (the seller?) remove the trees and there are any issues you can deny all responsibility.

If the trees can't be removed make sure you have a 'get out of jail free' pass to break any contract signed if necessary.

    • That's part of the process, but I guess what we are toying with is going in with a lower offer based on the understanding that there is inherent risk and cost.

  • Pretty sure our back neighbours just paid ~$5500, but was not a Eucalypt and was maybe urgent as a big part had just broken off. Not sure if it included stump grinding as I haven't looked over the fence.

This was in suburban Canberra. I think location has a significant effect on the price for something like this - manual labour jobs of this nature are generally a lot more expensive for me in CBR than for family in SE Qld for example.

  • Thats probably why its forsale .. green council wont let ya remove em possibly…

    reason its cheap?

    • Maybe, but its not significantly cheaper than other blocks in the area. This one has location so has a premium attached that counters the negative presence of the trees.

It's A LOT easier to ask for forgiveness than permission 😉

Ask the bloke in a fire zone in Vic hills who cleared a few acres, and got 250k fine and had to plant 1000 trees back

  • +3

Do it yourself if the area is otherwise clear of structures, 4 cuts (from a $200 chainsaw) and the trees are gone, burn the stump :P
Will be around $10k for professional removal of both ;)

    • Yeah nah. I like to think I could have a crack at it, but this is some serious timber! A bit beyond average Joe….

DIY and use as firewood in the new house woodheater. It will be nice and seasoned by then.

I had a big bamboo growth, removed them manually by hand eventually after multiple attempts of putting Blackberry poison (suggested by one of the guys at bunnings).
And the worst past was it was growing from under concrete, So had to bloody break the concrete slab just for that removal sake too.

Just takes a lot of elbow grease. you can do yourself though, just need right tools, and time.

I'd still suggest you poison that portion of land, so the tree dies (very lucky) but most likely it will not affect tree or simply just reduce its growth.

    • Are you honestly comparing removing Bamboo to a large gum tree? In case you didnt know Bamboo should be contained using a rhizome barrier

      • -1

Cannot really contain bamboo when you are not living there. When I got here it was already like this going to the fence.

anyway no point replying to you negging pointlessly when only giving you suggestion of poisoning tree with disclaimer it may not work, or just may reduce growth.

and ofcourse it will take elbow grease whether be yours or someone else. If you clearly dont want to spend on elbow grease then just pay someone else for it's removal.

And ofcourse bamboo is a lot different than eucalypts but removal strategy is same, multiple slow poisons, Elbow grease, tools.

  • I had one down last year. About 4-5 stories high. Branched off into two directions. 70cm diameter at shoulder height. Cost me $2700 to remove. Extra $300 if you want it mulched.
    I kept the wood.

It all depends on how wide it is at shoulder height, how much foliage is growing out of it and how many obstacles. Mine was 2metres from the house and hanging over the house and 2 sheds.

Edit: I didn't have the stump removed. Just cut to ground level. I think this is another $700 to $1000 depending how big it is.

  • 2nd mortgage

  • I had an enormous Norfolk Island pine tree removed. Cost $6000 for the lopping and $600 for the stump grinding. Coastal town, NSW.

  • Very much dependant on tree height, backyard access and where/how the tree is hanging. We got about 7 trees removed for about $3200 including stump grinding

  • Cost can very and it does pay to shop around. My neighbour got quoted initially for 4 grand to take down a Leyland cypress about 10m high but with massive canopy. Took him a while to find another guy only charge 2 grand for it, including stump ginding. You're in small country town so your negotiation power is less. But a gumtree will be a lot higher so i wouldn't be surprised if it cost 3-4k a pop.
Also make sure you negotiate to get the stump removed, my other neighbour got his gumtree removed for 1k years ago but the guy did a runner on the stump, saying he'd come back next day but never did, leaving them with a 1m high, 50cm diameter stump right at the fence corner. They paid the guy above for $100 or so to have it cut down to ground level but couldn't grind it down due to underground cable.

    Ask any of the locals
Or get some gelly, then a local with a tractor & a stump puller
I wish I was young again & close to ya, I love dropping big trees with me Husky. Then just cut up all the branches and pile it up against the stump to burn it away. It is the best time of year for it, just before winter, having a beer or a 100 by the fire
