  • Hi Simon!

whatisinaname.com.au, while it provides pretty good price comparison, has not been updated often. The .id.au and .org.au price is good, but for .com.au and .net.au, Name.com.au have been selling them for $20/2 year (which is lower than cost) for while now.

  • There ya go! So, how are name.com.au offering below cost + hosting… they must be expecting to do a lot of upselling. I assume name.com.au allow you to point the domain to other name servers.

    • Yup. Got a .net.au and a .com.au with Name.com.au. No problem in terms of pointing to your own name servers. They also provide DNS hosting though.

  • It should be pointed out that those prices are not "cost price", as the current "cost price" of a .com.au/.net.au domain is $20.35, which includes auDA's fee, AusRegistry's fee, and GST.

    • Doesn't AussieHost/Jumba also have to charge GST on top of the AusRegistry's wholesale price? So $20.35 + 10% = $22.38. Obviously they can then claim back the GST and all that tax stuff that I have no idea about but I guess that's how they claimed that $22 is their cost…

  • $20.35 is the GST inclusive price. The GST liability from a $22.00 sale is $2.00. They would then claim back $1.85 from the purchase price. So the true "cost" price would be $20.50. Also, these domains are not instantly registered as opposed to name.com.au and many others out there at the moment that are similarly priced or cheaper.

    • That is not how GST works. The cost price to Jumba is $18.50 and they pay $1.85 GST.

When they sell the domain name for $20 + $2 GST, they remit $0.15 to the ATO (which is the difference between the GST they paid and the GST they collected). The profit they have made is therefore $20 - $18.50 = $1.50. But whether they sell the domain name for $22 or $220, the cost price is still $18.50.
