I used to love buying collector's editions but sooner or later I realised it's almost all junk and annoyingly takes up space.

I think its pretty cool, but I'm going to skip this since I want the XBC3 one coming soon.

Tiny art book, postcards you'll never use… I'm surprised they didn't also throw in a CD soundtrack that many people can't actually play

I got the collectors edition of Ni No Kuni 2 as EB games was clearing it out for like $60, it came with an LP of all things.

Thanks! I'm excited for this game so was tempted, but for $160 I'm not sure it's worth it. Acrylic standies and an artbook isn't really that much, though the tapestry is cool. I feel like in the current gaming environment physical extras don't cut it much anymore. I guess I've grown up finally coz I used to love getting random crap with my limited editions hahahaha.

I still love getting useless junk and artbooks with limited editions. But I find the trick is only getting them for franchises you really really love.

At least now that they hardly ever have special editions that actually save you money. I miss stuff like the Fire Emblem Fates one or the Wii Skyward Sword one.

I got the Fire Emblem Fates one and you're right that it was worth the money.

I guess as gaming has changed I think people's relationships with physical media has a bit as well, or mine has at least. When so much of what we consume now is all online or digital it seems less and less important to buy the physical copy. A good example of this is streaming services. Just a decade ago collecting Blu-Ray and DVD box sets were still big things, but now that streaming is so ubiquitous and back catalogues have been added there's less need to go and purchase the DVD. Maybe one day gaming will also get to that point. I guess if they want Collector's editions to still be worth it they might need to start going the extra mile like the Fates one, that was both better value and had lots of extra stuff with it to make it worth it.

With gaming, at least for Nintendo consoles, physical is still often cheaper.

Which I think makes collecting still very appealing and easy to slip into. I know I still get physical > digital for Switch if its an option.

Plus with the reluctance of Nintendo to make its back catalogue readily available I think thats unlikely to change anytime soon. Especially since the DS/3DS games will probably never have great backwards support unless Nintendo re-releases the console with a digital version in the future.

  • The edition is over-priced and it’s been in stock since it was announced at EB Games.

Not even the scalpers don’t want this.

Can’t believe they didn’t even bother including a steel book case
