Singapore - Accommodation options for 2 families ( 5 adults + 4 kids) - 4nights

We are 2 families ( 5 adults + 4 kids under 10yrs) looking for 4 nights accommodation in Jan 2023. I understand that many family tourist attractions are located on Sentosa Island but accommodation in Sentosa is too expensive so we will need to look at alternatives.

Do we book one big accommodation to accommodate all of us or two separate accommodation per family? Which would be better option in terms of cost and location/access to the tourist places? Any specific areas we should look at accommodation?

Thanks in advance.

An Airbnb may be your best bet. Location depends where you would like to spend your time in Singapore. HarbourFront area is central and near Sentosa with plenty of public transport as well and maybe a good place to look at. It may be better to look at 2 accomodations as Apartments can get cramped with that many people especially in that area. You also get some discounts on Tourist attractions with a Singapore Airlines Boarding pass if that's the airline you are flying on.

In regards to cost, Singapore is a business hub so accommodation is generally more expensive for stays on Sun-Thu nights.

If your 4 nights stay is flexible and can include Fri-Sat nights then you might find prices to be a little cheaper (downside is that the streets/shops/restaurants are more crowded on the weekends).

We once stayed in a luxury hotel in Johor for half the price. Was great for Legoland too. The train to Sg takes 5 minutes plus customs clearance time. Was pre-covid tho, so might not be the same anymore.

    • How did you get half price? Which hotel chain?

Johor Bahru is over the border in Malaysia, where everything is a fraction of the price. I’ll def stay in JB again. Just put Johor Bahru hotels into expedia or something and you’ll see what I mean. Its not as straightforward as staying in Sg, or as clean & polished, but its cheaper for a big family and we’ve used buses and walked places without finding it especially dodgy or unsafe. If you stay near JB Sentral station/ immigration CIQ complex you can even walk to the train. Going to Sg requires immigration queues (often fairly fast pre-covid) or you can hire a private van driver to take you to Sentosa or anywhere else in Singapore I think.

        • Thank you for the tips.

How far are the family tourist attractions eg Sentosa etc from JB Sentral station/ immigration CIQ complex in terms of distance, time and taxi/train fares? What is best way to commute for our group size from JB?

@bluespider: Would like to add on, there might be long queues to cross borders esp during public hols/weekends. Depends on when you are going, it could also be relatively empty, but it is a possibility to be stuck in the customs queue for a couple of hours on certain days. Borders recently opened for travelling, and there were reports of long queues.

The KTM train service from JB sentral to woodlands train checkpoint that was mentioned is a good way, but it's currently not operating until further notice. When it resumes operation, be sure to book tickets online asap, since they sell out pretty fast previously.

Regarding ride hailing, u can consider using Grab app. It works in both JB and SG. There are other ride hailing apps in SG.

Note, if you are taking public transport from woodlands train checkpoint busstop (after clearing both customs) to sentosa USS, it will take about 1h 28min (according to Google maps).

  • It might be tough to find airbnb in singapore since short-term rentals are illegal in Singapore for property owners. You can try looking out for flash promos for bookings hotels on Traveloka, Klook, Trip.com as well. Some promotion codes are released on their telegram chat group weekly. Somerset/Orchard Road, Bras Basah/Bencoolen (These two MRT train stations are walking distance, and are on different lines. Walking distance to museum, Prinsep St as well), Bugis, Clarke Quay.
I would include some of the nearby Harbourfront lodgings as part of Sentosa, since u can just take the direct Sentosa express train from Vivocity to Sentosa (Free for now), or take the boardwalk.
