  • Hi Rep, Please confirm this works well with triple monitor for windows. also connect with Keyboards, wireless mouse, headphone?. may be basic question, pls clarify

You need to check your windows laptop first. Does it support USB-C/alt-mode (DP 1.4)? If yes, does it support MST? If unsure, provide the laptop model (as much detail as possible, including the CPU and GPU). Personally, I don't see the usefulness of USB-C/alt-mode DP 1.4 triple displays via these dongles (due to bandwidth distribution / lack of bandwidth). Do you really have a strong need for 3 x 1080p/60Hz? MST isn't all you can eat, it is splitting that 4K/60Hz bandwidth and re-distribute it to 3 displays (assuming it is DP 1.4).

It's not get the hub and the USB-C/alt-mode will just magically work. The reality is that alt-mode depends on the USB-C chipset (or Thunderbolt chipset via USB-C compatibility mode) and the actual GPU (even if it is integrated).

      • Thanks for the info. i will check and come back if any specific question.

If your Intel CPU is 8th gen, unless it comes with a discrete GPU (AMD or nVidia), forget this hub altogether. You "might" get DP 1.4 from the USB-C/Thunderbolt chipset, but Intel embedded GPU is DP 1.2 so you are stuck with DP 1.2.
If your Intel CPU is 7th gen or below, just forget this hub altogether (DP 1.2 for sure).
If your Intel CPU is 9th gen or above, really need to know the details.

      • @netsurfer perhaps you can help me too. I've got a work laptop, MS Surface Laptop 3 (i7 1065G7), will I be able to connect 2 x 24" 1080p monitors with provisions to upgrade to 27" 1440p monitors in the future?

Please consider this answer as unofficial as I am only able to check tech specs and speculate. I generally don't recommend 3rd party dongles.

From the following document, that laptop does appear to support MST:
          https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/troubleshoot-con…

Based on checking the Intel Web site for the CPU and the embedded Iris Plus GPU, assuming Microsoft has done it correctly, it should support USB-C/Alt-mode DP 1.4. Technically, the bandwidth is sufficient to do 2 x 2K (1440p) 60Hz, however, this hub description does not list that as a possibility (so it is a gamble). 2 x 1080p (60Hz) is possible.

Would be good if OP (Austar) could clarify whether 2 x 2K @ 60Hz is a possibility in DP + HDMI or HDMI + HDMI combination.

Based on the reviews I've read for these type of USB C adaptors, they can work well but they tend to run hot and the most common complaint seems to be connections dropping intermittently, issues with power passthrough, overheating, etc. They are probably good for infrequent use, but if you rely on a webcam, mouse, monitor etc for work then spend more and buy a dedicated dock from Dell, HP, other that comes with its own PSU. There are some refurbished docks on eBay for the same price as this that could be worth considering (though they won't run two 4k monitors).

Definitely read the Australian reviews on Amazon before buying

    • Can't disagree, but will say that hootoo sockets seem to be more reliable over time than other units I've had

  • Is there a USB C Hub, that supports 4k at 60 hz for DP 1.2? I just need to connect to a single 4k 32 inch monitor. Currently its awkward switching between work laptop and home laptop. Just want to connect the USB C from the hub/dock to my Mac (work laptop) or my Win (h0me laptop) easily without trying to connect multiple cables.

    • I don't recommend getting one of those, but this one "might" (quite risky):

      https://www.amazon.com.au/HARIBOL-Adapter-Ethernet-Charging-…

Personally, I feel that there is very little benefit getting USB 2.0 ports, 100Mbit ethernet and card reader limited to USB 2.0 all through that very limited USB 2.0 bus, given that with DP 1.2, you need to give the full USB 3 data pipe to the display for 4K/60Hz to work.

      • @netsurfer. Wholly agree with the contents of your previous posts in this thread. However, wouldn't write off the inclusion of USB 2.0 ports just yet. They are handy legacy ports. I have this hub attached to a relatively skinny HP laptop with virtually no room for any ports. (I bought it mainly for the Ethernet port - Wi-Fi is not always an available option where I go), and is a terrific hub for peripheral devices when in need). The USB2.0 ports come in handy for the low bandwidth mouse and keyboard and older USB 2.0 thumb drives where you may not want to waste a USB 3.0 port.

Bought mine at Amazon Black Friday deal for A$54.75), so after 5 months of relatively heavy duty daily use on and off the road, it is a good performer and has no issues, for me anyway. It performs better than my older TP-Link hub with 7 USB-C ports (AC powered) which this replaced. More flexibilty imho.

  • looking for dock similar to this for a macbook pro 2021. has thunderbolt 4 ports.

    will this work? anything better?

    • +1

It's not ideal. Apple doesn't and won't support MST (Apple wants you to use Thunderbolt daisy chain) so multiple displays are not going to work with this type of hubs/docks. You are basically using USB-C compatibility mode from your Thunderbolt 4 when using this. However, even Apple's official dongle is USB-C/alt-mode based.

Thunderbolt 3 docks start from $250. Before you get all excited about Thunderbolt 4, you need to ask yourself this question, which exact features in Thunderbolt 4 (compared to Thunderbolt 3) do you actually intend to use? Do you really know the differences? Also, a new revision of USB 4 (and most likely the same will happen to Thunderbolt 4) is coming so is it really wise to buy Thunderbolt 4 accessories now?
