New TV Time. 75" Budget $4,000

Time for a new TV. There is too much choice out there but have narrowed it down some what. Any and all opinions welcome. Here is the list so far but any other recommendations welcome. All are 75" models.

Sony x90j - $2570 (should I wait for the x90k?)
Sony x95j - $3780
Samsung QN85b - $3786
Samsung QN800a (8k) - $3880
LG QNED91 - $3489
TCL c825 - $2750
TCL x925 (8k) - $3650

While I can spend close the 4k mark, I would prefer not to but this will be a 6ish year investment. So far hard to beat the Sony x90j at its current price, it doesn't wow me but I do like the picture, but then should I wait for the x90k coming out soon which should be closer to the x95j? I do love some Sony upscaling and processing…..

Opinions from anyone who owns any of the above would be helpful :)

Thanks

  • I'm in the same boat
I'm tossing up between the X90J and TCL C825.
The TCL has been as low as $2400 before

Where can you get the X90J for $2570

    • JB hi-fi commercial, have membership through my super fund

  • The QN800a might be the most future proof of your options if you want something to hold onto for 6+ years without feeling too much GAS in the coming years

  • Where did you find that price on the x90J?

  • I would wait for a deal on the Samsung QN90B. I'm a OLED fan, and even I am impressed by it.

Sharing my experience to help you knock off the TCL options. I own both a 65" LG CX 4k ($3591 from ApplianceCentral eBay Aug 2020) & a 65" TCL X925 8k ($2395 from Gecko eBay Jan 2022). I also have a freebie Samsung AU8000 4k from a telstra kickback.

I would completely avoid the TCLs and stick with one of the big 3 brands based on whichever one has the ecosystem that best fits your use case.
The reason I say to avoid the TCLs is simply because of the poor processor performance. The X925 is equipped with GoogleTV which is awesome, the panel is amazing, the dimming zones not so great. The processor brings the entire experience to a grinding halt on every acrtion, every single input is seemingly a strain on the system.
Fortunately for me I have it hooked up to my gaming PC so my settings are static, but for everyday TV use I wouldn't wish that kind of experience on anyone, even for the price I paid.

On the LG side, whilst I don't have the model you listed, their OS is pretty solid and I have no complaints whatsoever with the end user experience. The only app that is missing from LG's library for me is standalone Paramount+, the workaround is to subscribe to Amazon Prime's Paramount+ channel. OLED true black is just incredible to witness, if only their WOLED technology would catch up on brightness.

Samsung by far had the best plug-in and setup experience of the 3 brands. Their App availability is ahead of LG's library, and phone functionality is unmatched with hand-over and casting carefully implemented rather than an after thought if you do that sort of thing.

I don't have a current Sony TV but they use GoogleTV OS which iI am a big fan of.

I will be keeping an eye out for Samsung's new QD-OLED TVs as I am always wowed by the true blacks on my OLED.

    • Thanks, views on the x925 have helped :-)

Yeah, of it was purely for me, I'd get oled but the misses watches a lot during the day on mat leave in a very bright room.

About TCL, had the same issue with my hisense, great panel and picture when it works, but the processor really let it down for me, plus slight stuttering with the image, almost like the processor was struggling with upscaling and all the other things it needed to do

  • I believe the new 2022 Sony x95 will be a mini LED TV which would be my pick, no idea when that would be available tho.

I think we've also seen the 2021 Sony x95 85" @ $4200 on their new education store which would be an excellent TV at that price if you can get one.

Samsung still refuse to offer Dolby vision and I find that HDR 10 doesn't always convey the same feel of the scenes (almost always brighter)

  • All other things being equal, you'll want the smallest possible dimming zones, otherwise the light will bleed and you'll get halo effect around candles and stuff.

  • In a similar situation but I have the following models on my list too.

    75" QN90B - $3499
    75" QN95B - $3849

Where is the X90J at that price?

Also is the QN85B a VA panel?

I'm torn on getting a high end model or something (relatively) mid tier like the X90J.

I have a 30% off loyalty voucher from Samsung (old tv broke recently).

        • Many thanks wrekt. I also have an old Samsung TV purchased about 3 years ago, but randomly switch off by itself. I chat with Samsung via online chat, they basically told me there is no TV voucher but only mobile phones vouchers. Any tricks you can share? Appreciated.

          • @ileonid: I initially called their support line via phone and worked through their troubleshooting steps, etc.

Once they determined my old TV is faulty I asked what deal they can do. Initially they offered a 15% voucher and after pushing them for more they transferred me to their sales team who gave me a 30% loyalty voucher. And another 15% one for a soundbar.

Try call them you may have better luck.

QN85B is a ADS panel apparently. Apparently has better colour richness, but viewing angles are not wide as you would expect from a ADS. Also doesn't reach the same peak brightness as the QN90B. That's up to you if you think that's a deal breaker for HDR, along with lack of Dolby Vision.

  • Bought a 75X90J a month ago on Sony online store. Price match for $2500 (they don't verify). Pretty happy with it to be honest. Unless you're comparing side by side with LG C1, I didn't feel that the difference was significant enough to justify the additional cost.

  • This time and age I'd not spend that much for a boring LCD, even if it's 200", OLED FTW now.
