PSA: Do Not Purchase The New Ryzen 6800H Asus TUF Laptops

TL;DR: We are paying about 20% extra than China, to get a much worse panel (2k165hz 100%DCI P3 vs 1080p144hz 62.5%srgb), panels of this kind of specs are only found in dirt cheap gaming laptops like those 1.2k nitro 5 deals-and this machine cost 2.7 grand.

Originally posted as description for a deal but I don't find it too much a deal the more I looked at it, but feel more like its being insulting to Australian consumers even at this discounted price. Had since then asked the mods to remove the deal posting, but still wanted to put this down here to raise some awareness, do be warned my formatting is all over the place so read at your own discretion

The first of the Rzen 6000 series to land in Australia, a good upgrade over the last year's TUF, But here's why you shouldn't buy it…or not, your money your choice.

Originally, I was going to shill for this year's TUF at first when I saw the deal, but half way through writing this I realised a major issue with this laptop, let's go through the good parts about the TUF dash first:

  • 6800h, very power efficient chip and a even bigger step up compared to last year. Basically in any sub 60w workload it will be better than the 12th gen with quite a few more cores. And obviously far better battery life, not as good as m1 chips, that's kinda unavoidable since well its x86 vs ARM. But should last you a whole workday no problem

  • full powered 140w 3070, with mux switch to boot, so yes, unlike last year's sad piece of machine that is the TUF, this years TUF is definitely a very good gaming machine

And here's where the good stuff ends, now lets talk about the price.

As you might know, we kinda pay a lot for digital electronics here in Australia-not just compared to say China or other developing countries, but NA and EU as well. Now i have ranted a few times about legion's price difference before, but this year's TUF have it worse: In China, the 3070/6800h model costs 2.2k aud, the Australian RRP across retailers seemed to be $2699.

That's not too bad, you might say, its only 500 dollaroos-legion had a big price difference vs China as well, we do have to pay the 10% GST, and you said yourself just before that ANZ pricing is generally more expensive, so how come the hate?

Here comes the elephant in the room, in China, they get a top of the line, 2k WQHD 165hz panel with 100% DCI-P3 screen, in comparison to the legion panels, this trade better colour coverage but loses out on HDR and a bit of extra screen space.

Us? Well we get a fabulous 1080p, 144hz, 62.5% sRGB panel-in China this is only used on the 3050/50ti models.

Yep you heard that right, you would hesitate buying a gaming laptop with kind of colour coverage for 1.5k, let alone a 2.5k one. So yeah, had this being the 2k panel, this would be a good deal, had this been the 300hz 100% srgb panel, this would still be an okay deal. Now? its a trash deal,

But hey at least its on launch discount or sth and its is available for immediate shipping so that's something I guess.

Asus what the actual?

What a convoluted hard to red post due to how it is put together. Gave up at second horizontal line.

its originally posted in the description for a deal. I dont know how to make it easier to read but its hard to explain everything while keeping it concise.

I had made a TLDR if the editing was a bit messy:

I'm not sure why you are complaining, even in Taiwan they only get a FHD panel and a 3060. And Asus is Taiwanese.

Hi there, first, the model you linked in 17', this one is 15', secondly, your model cost 36900 twd which is about 1.7k aud. the one I was talking about is 2.7k aud here.

by comparison the 3060 6800h 15' model here is 2.4k aud

      • There's a potential market of 1+ billion people in China vs 25 million in Australia.

Australia has import costs, local warranty and GST costs as well.

The information you are sharing is not unique to this laptop. It happens everywhere around the world especially in the automotive space.

If you read my original post, I am already considering the gst and any additional fees, I have noted that we always pay more than China. Its the same for legion or any other laptop.

But for the lenovo legion-or practically anything else, we dont just pay so much more to get a cut down product. I dont buy an iphone 13 pro at 20% extra to find that all other regions get 4 cameras and i get 2, I dont buy a car at 20% extra to find Im missing aircon. And I certainly am not okay with a 2.7k laptop having the same screen specs as what other brands sell in their 1.2k laptops here in australia.

      • I cannot find the price, at least on Asus's website for the 15' hence why I posted the 17' version. Laptops are always priced higher in Australia for the first few months of sale and have then 10-20% discounts. However I have looked at Asus laptops for past 6 months in Aus and Taiwan and the pricing roughly has been the same, so I opted to buy my Asus laptop in Aus due to the warranty and US keyboard. Quite surprising the TUF book is cheaper in Taiwan then Aus, it is normally the other way around.

        • Laptops are always priced higher in Australia for the first few months of sale

Yes they have and even with a sale they may be more expensive than other regions. And honestly I understand that, as I have noted in my post.

What I am not okay with is that, in this years asus tuf, we are paying so much extra on top of a cut down machine, and this is simply ridiculous. In any other laptops I would still be paying a good 10, 20 percent oz price hike, but they dont literally change the screen from a top end one to a bottom of the barrel one while still keeping the steep pricetag increase

          • @Brrrrt: That is fair, but honestly what is the appeal of a gaming laptop compared to a desktop if your use case is mainly the same place.. They are extremely overpriced for what you get, compared to a desktop

            • @Sean8802: well i mean theres the people who needed the portablity like me, or mainly the target audience would be tech illiterate bunch of people who dont want to go through the trouble of building a pc-they just wanted a machine like a console they can plug & play with.

its also the latter people that will get scammed into buying this laptop, you can almost bet reviewers will be getting the Chinese model-or the 300hz 100%srgb model and pump out a good review, and people will want to buy it without realising asus done a bait and switch and gave it one of the worst panel you can find in a gaming laptop.

Thank you for raising awareness of this issue. 100% sRGB should be the bare minimum in 2022 especially at this price point, 62.5% is just an insult unless you like washed out colours and don't mind being ripped off hard compared to other countries. I had my eye on this year's tuf A15 but just couldn't find an SKU with one of the better panels. This was the major deal breaker and for this reason my money is going elsewhere.

Agreed, especially considering this machine is so expensive its literally a cruel joke as if asus is trying to unload all their junk stock in australia. And since most people will be clueless and not realise how bad of a panel they are getting.

      • Australia will be probably getting all the AU Optronics panels (cheap Taiwanese panels).

        • Makes you wonder how much extra asus makes selling these trash panel laptops while still keeping the oz pricehike…

even last years panel was better at near 100% srgb and 240hz ….

Appreciate the rant. Good info. Thanks Brr!

Your welcome. Sorry for the mess of an editing but if I can pursuade one man to not part with their money for something trash then its worth it :)

      • +1

Exactly! Don’t stress about the editing, sometimes you’ve just got to get the message down no matter how it’s structured. Still helps people!

  • Thanks for the info OP, well I had no issues reading your description, probably I'm smarter then most on here lolz

Ok go for it negs negs negs, I'm bored lolz😁

But seriously something to watch on on ones next purchase👍

How is being smart linked to knowing computer specs?

    It made sense to me….

  • Ryzen tho

  • I was looking at buying one of these today

    ROG Strix G15 15.6-inch R9-5900HX/16GB/512GB SSD/RX 6800M 12GB Gaming Laptop

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/rog-strix-g15-15-6-inch-r9-5…

    Asus TUF Gaming A15 15.6-inch R7-6800H/16GB/512GB SSD/RTX3070 8GB Gaming Laptop

    https://www.harveynorman.com.au/asus-tuf-gaming-a15-15-6-inc…

Not sure what to do or what else to go for

    • Out of the box, the A15 will bring you better frames as it have a mux switch. But again the 144hz panel is trash. And cooling is not as good as the Strix AE.

If you grab the G15, and is willing to pair it up with an external monitor down the line (remember to use a type c to displayport cable, not HDMI), that will give you better frames than the A15.
