  • Woops …

    • Is it a repost? :S

    • woops on Dell's behalf! the 10th May seems to be for the Inspiron 15, i'm guessing this 15R ends on 31st May

    • I think its the same link but its a different deal. Because dell still uses the same link to their 'Popular Laptop Deals' but they change deals from time to time while remaining the same link ( I think),

      But this laptop is $899.

      • -3

I think what you mean is with 4% off it's cheaper

        • -5

His description very misleading seem like discount only for over $999 but this laptop is only $899.

  • What does this mean?

Daughter Board: Daughter Board For WLAN
    Wireless: Mobile Broadband Not Included

    • +4

It has Wifi but no 3G (Mobile broadband).

  • +3

+1 Ivy bridge CPU, this is what I have been waiting for.

    • +3

Just went through this exercise yesterday.. In the end I decided to go for a sandy bridge cpu and a 240gb ssd for $100 more.. The weakest point these days in most laptops is the slow mechanical drive.

      • I don't know why anyone would get a laptop without one. Or at least upgrading to an SSD. They are so important.

  • -1

$900 for a new laptop with those specs seems quite decent but dont Dells break down a lot more compared to other brands such as HP, Asus, toshi~ so on?

    • +2

IMO HP (esp. Compaq division) is worse than Dell. But no real scientific evidence apart from the SquareTrade reliability report which was published over 2 years ago.

      • What was worse than the build quality/reliability was HP's ostrich response to the well documented issues that many of the DV series in particular had!

I've whinged about them enough times before, so I'll spare you all the agony; but let me just say the 'A' in HPA doesn't stand for Australia! :p

As this deal stands, I'm not a huge Dell fan, but this is a lot of lappy for the money! :)

        • My Inspiron has been running strong for 6 years. Has been through the wars also.

        • Yep, I know of a few Dell golden oldies that are still plugging away as well. As I say, I'm not a big fan but I have nothing against them either. IME the newer entry level ones haven't been up to the standard of the older models. That said, IIRC they are pretty decent with honouring warranty at Dell, so that puts them head & shoulders above HP.

          Scrimshaw's nailed it, there's everybody else…and then there's HP! :p

    • +3

People say alot of things like how Acer's build quality is horrible. But I'm still using my 4 year old Acer and my sister is still using her 6 year old one. So, it really boils down to the user, and a little luck.

    • HP no, others, yes.

    • +2

Most people think HP is worse. However, the infamous nVidia graphics card issue affected quite a few laptops, regardless of the brand of the laptop.

My main gripe with Dell is dead pixels. For some reason, with my luck, my record on getting a Dell monitor with at least 2 dead pixels is 50% (and that's Dell Ultrasharp monitors and high resolution laptops (not the 1366x768 standard LCD)). They do have the 14 days satisfaction guarantee, which I used a few times, but I had to pay for the return shipping.

    • Having used Latitude/Optiplex as well as consumer Inspiron units for many years now, I have been impressed all round with reliability and build quality of these machines.

Dell support is quite good too. Lots of spare parts available and units are generally easy to upgrade down the track.

Then again considering all laptops are only manufactured by a handful of ODMs (Compal, Quanta), I think they're all mostly similar these days.

    • Depends, i had an inspiron 6400 that lasted 3 years before the hinged broke off for the monitor. The xps line for Dell is solid from my experience. My xps 16 easily had the best quality monitor back when i bought it. Asus, ive seen their entertainment units flop 2 weeks later, ram going bust and trackpads failing. Their ROG gaming line is pretty good though.

      • The old XPS series are quite good. Not very happy with Dell's recent changes to XPS line. The option for high resolution screen is gone now (only for Latitue & Alienware) and the cutdown of warranty service for XPS - used to be onsite service default.

Dell used to offer high resolution screens even for their Inspiron laptops.

BTW, voted on the other deal, don't quite feel like voting +ve on this one.

  • These laptops seem to get you better cards for lower price compared to desktops.. HD 7330 seems quite good for gaming actually. Why aren't more people just buying laptops instead of desktops ?

    • +2

Desktops are more than just GPUs. You cant customize a laptop like you would be able to with a Desktop.

    • +4

Screen resolution - esp. Dell seems to stop offering high res screens for home/home office laptops (even for XPS, this is no longer an option).
Ports - PC has more USB ports, more sound ports, eSATA ports etc..
Desktop keyboard and mouse are still better for real work.
24+ inch screen is cool, dual monitors also cool
Ability to change parts easily - blu-ray writers are cheap. Multiple writers are cost effective.
Multi hard drives or SSD + hard drive combo.

To do real / large amount of work or high end photo/video editing, desktops are still easier. Replacing a faulty part is also easier.

      • +1

It's so hard to get though because laptop comes with the added ability of portability + less power consumption. I saw the HP get posted a while ago posted here for only approx $600.

I was once told laptops costed more then to get a desktop with the same specs. Has this come to even out?

    • And… the Radeon 7730 is actually shyte for gaming:

      http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/535?vs=543

I mean that's the 7750 there (it's desktop counter-part with better clocks) getting owned by a GTX 560 which can be had for $100 (or less).

The GTX 560 (and it's predecessors and equivalents) I consider to be the bare minimum standard for any serious gamer who wants to play modern titles @ the de-facto standard resolution of 1920x1080 without the frame rate dipping below 20 FPS.

      • +1

But games like diablo 3 only require a amd radeon 4430 to play normally. I don't think the 7730 can be that bad for gaming can it because i'm about to get a PC with a 7870 radeon which is only like 2 models older

      • Any 'serious gamer' would just get a desktop.

        • Also the power consumption of the 7750 is much better then the gtx560. I don't think thats fair competition but i've seen some great HP sales on ozbargain lately with nice specs. I think you'd only need the newest gpu if you are using a ips screen or something. But still that benchmark site is very good and i'll continue my plan in getting a desktop!

I guess the main benefit is SLI and better circulation for a desktop but not many SLI anyways

        • -1

Well obviously but I'm just trying to refute the claim that this was a good card for "gaming".

Maybe Diablo 3 and WoW yes but everything else of note released in the last 3 years won't perform up to scratch.

Your comparing a desktop equivalent card and resolutions etc.. which is a Faux Pas when considering laptops.. This card is actually pretty good for gaming considering its a laptop and the price.. well worth it!

        • +2

yeah the 7730M is quite good..

a comparable laptop is the Acer

          Acer V3-571G-73614G75Makk: i7-3610QM/4GB/750GB/2GB GT640M/DVD±R/RW —> http://www.acer.com.au/ac/en/AU/content/model/NX.RZNSA.001

which is $932.45 (less 15% til today which comes down to $792.58) @ JB atm —> http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/acer/15-inch-notebook-sku…

note the GT640M (which should give roughly par performance with eh 7730M) and i7-3610QM

          3610QM: 2300MHz Turbo boosted to 3300MHz @ 45W
          3612QM: 2100MHz Turbo boosted to 3100MHz @ 35W

        • Which is what I said. There are no benchmarks circulating for the 7730M (or for a lot of mobile GPUs for that matter) so using a rough guide here we can deduce that's it going to be substantially slower than a 7750 which isn't really up to snuff if you like your triple-A titles like BF3, Mass Effect 3, Arkham City, Skyrim, Crysis 2, Deus Ex: HR, etc.

All I'm saying is, serious gamers (if that is your intention buying this laptop) would go for a desktop option in the first place, which would be far better in terms of dollar-to-perfomance ratio.

        • Looks like the JB price on the Acer V3-571G-73614G75Makk has gone back up to $1097.

      • Where does one buy a GTX 560 for $100 or less?

  • Anyone know roughly what these laptops would weigh??

  • Anyone know why they offer a the "Dell - 130 Watt 3 Prong AC Adapter with 6 ft Power Cord Product details [$79.20]" as an extra? the base model does come with a power adaptor I assume?

    • It's there because some people want a second adaptor to leave at work/home

  • Ordered mine last night. Expected delivery 29th May. Just got the base version - $889.00. Good enough to last me all of next year.

Any ideas on what I can do with my current laptop? Its still got a bit of life left in it

    • you can donate to me :)

  • lol dell jacked up the price to $1098.90 for the current upto 30% off sale that ends on may 31.. 19% goes down to $890.11.. and you can't stack the coupon that's on the OP

    • Its really disappointing dell did that.

    • +1

The $1098 one you referring to is a different spec to the $899 one in this deal. That is, it is not a jacked up price it is a different spec-ed product.

There were 3 different specs of the 15R Special Edition when launched. Today, the middle spec of those two ($1099) was removed from the 15R Special Edition page and is now under the End of Financial Year Sale page at $890 - http://www.dell.com/au/p/popular-laptop-deals.aspx?c=au&cs=a…

It has 2Gb more of RAM (8Gb), other than that, I'm not entirely sure what the different is between that and the $899 ($999) introductory offer one.

I just bought the $890 special one on behalf of my sister this afternoon. We went shopping today but we couldn't find anything better or even equivalent in the $900-$1300 price range. We were originally going to buy the $1299 one (coupon on top of that) but instead chose the $$ saving over the better screen, Blu-ray and SSD cache. Quite happy all up :-D

Edit: Link to the $899 and $1299 models: http://www.dell.com/au/p/inspiron-15r-se-7520/pd.aspx?c=au&c…

  • Graphics cards
nVidia N13P-GL (Lenovo E530) vs AMD Radeon HD 7730M (Dell 15R)

Which one is better? Both are 2GB but I can't seem to find a benchmark that can compare both…

  • I can't seem to get the NRMA code to work:

    4% off Dell-branded systems up to $999
    Code: 84Z2PRZGW$JQCC

Has this code worked for anyone else?
