½ Price Vitasoy Long Life Almond Milk 1L $1.50 @ Woolworths

510

Great product, even though it is only 3.8% almonds. Subtle taste, good for coffee, doesn't curdle.
Great for everyday use or stock up for prepping!

Limits may apply for quantities over 36, YMMV. Amazon will only sell you 6!

Your questions:

Q. Doesn't almond milk use a lot of water to make?
A. Not nearly as much as cow's milk. Apparently it takes some 2,000 gallons of water to produce one gallon of cow milk, roughly twice as much as that required to produce a gallon of Almond Milk.

Q. What is the best alternative milk for coffee frothing?
A. Try the minor figures. Currently on sale at $3.84 or $3.90.

Q. Why isn't the almond milk 100% almonds?
A. That wouldn't make any sense. All milks are emulsion in water.

Q. Are they allowed to call this stuff milk when it's not from a cow?
A. See above.

Q. But humans are meant to drink cow's milk. It's good for us.
A. Humans have only been drinking cow's milk for 100 years, since pasteurisation and refrigeration made it safe to drink outside of a farm. Two-thirds of people on the planet are lactose intolerant. That may not include you, but don't you think drinking the breast milk of another animal is a little weird?

Q. But only weirdos and hipsters drink milk alternatives.
A. Nobody's forcing you to buy. Move along.

    Sweet thanks

This is actually the unsweetened version

If you're truly worried about water usage and the environment, check out oat milk instead. Much lower water required to make.

And the most delicious milk of all

    • +1

Definitely prefer oat in my coffee, but this is also such a good point.

      • +4

I have had black coffee for the last 40 years and tried oat milk in my coffee for the first time last week - and I am a convert

Pure Harvest Oat Milk is half price at Woolies too right now:
      https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/86298/pure…

      Anyone tried this before?

      • +2

I've tried this one before and did not like it, especially not in my coffee. YMMV, but this is one of the brands of oat milk I avoid (and I use a lot of oat milk).

        • Same, Pure Harvest even tastes subtly bitter and has a weird texture.

        • +1

What's your go to? Vitasoy unsweetened is what we typically get.

          • +1

@Gojkins: So Good Oat Milk (No added sugar) is my favourite! I stock up on it whenever it goes on special, but it hasn't been on sale for a very long time now 😢

        • Would like to know which brands you prefer too! Especially for coffee

          • +1

@nomaz: So Good Oat milk is my first choice. Others I don't mind are Oatly, Vitasoy and Uncle Toby's (although Uncle Toby's doesn't do well when heated). I usually try to stick to the ones fortified with calcium and extra vitamins and minerals (which are So Good and Uncle Toby's).

        • Ran out of milk once and used oat milk for my coffee cause I was too lazy to go shop. It didn't froth at all with my steamer and was absolutely disgusting, worst coffee I've had in my life lol. Not sure which brand I used.

Bit of a shame Woolworths have deleted the Almond Milky version.

    • yeah, I find this product a bit watery, the 'milky' ones are much better

        +1 for the Milky

  • Ahh. One question missing.
Where are the udders on almonds?

    • Don't be a tit

      • Dont be a green turd.

the "2000 gallons of water to produce one gallon of milk" may be technically true, but not in the way you think, or the way it's implied.

    https://youtu.be/sGG-A80Tl5g?t=176

spoiler alert: that figure includes rainwater.

    • +5

Yep, it's not really the same water

The problem is that almonds are made in areas with water scarcity (irrigation areas), whereas dairy farms are in areas of high rainfall. Let's break down those figures by price of water per litre of milk, and it'll become obvious that the almonds are using scarcer water supplies

I'm not anti almond milk, but the facts as presented are a complete misrepresentation

      • the video actually goes into that, talking about how the vast majority of water used by california almond farms is not "green water"

Whoever is head of marketing at oat milk deserves a raise for changing public perception of almond milk so quickly.

Almond the best by far. Only obese people say otherwise.

    • I know who you are lol

  • Wish there was any deal on soy milk

  • +3

Main issue with Almond, Oat, rice milks as a substitute for cow's milk is that they are mostly water with little nutritive value. They all have low protein. If taste is not an issue, then soy milk is a better replacement in terms of protein content. More expensive brands of all these milks tend to be better fortified with calcium to match cow's milk. Watch out for cheaper brands as they skimp on the calcium, which is the main reason to drink cow's milk in the first place.

    • Drink oat at home and cow milk at work as that's what they provide for free. Balanced diet

    • -4

eating / drinking a lot of soy puts you at a higher risk of dementia / alzheimers in later life. in extreme cases it has also resulted in hormone issues in men (he grew small tits and lost sex drive)

      • +2

Meat and diary increases chances of heart disease. Just pick your poison I guess.

        • better to die sooner knowing who you are than to live longer and forget your own name, having other people to wipe for you

          • @[Deactivated]: True. At least you remember all the money you passed on down, that you never got to enjoy.

        • And neither do shit if you actually got to the gym and do resistance training and cardio.

          • @KLoNe: Gym doesn't do anything if you are over eating calories. In your mouth and you can't get it out via your orifices fast enough.

Why is overweight people sweaty? It is all the food trying to craw out from your skin.

          • @KLoNe: Cardio is for joggers.

      • -1

No, there has never been any evidence of this. I posted a link below that debunks this myth.

      • my penis fell off after I looked at soy once. Be warned

    • substitute for cow's milk is that they are mostly water with little nutritive value

What do you think makes milk flow. It might not be added in but it sure got in there somewhere.

    • +8

calcium, which is the main reason to drink cow's milk

There are tonnes of other calcium sources. Half the world doesn't drink dairy. This "calcium only from dairy" BS has to die. Cows' milk is for baby cows.

    • +1

No-one, besides babies drink milk for NUTRITIONAL VALUE.
If you want a healthy drink, drink water.
If you want a milk (which is ALWAYS purely for taste), drink the one with the lowest fat content.

  • We actually cannot break down and digest cows milk to obtain any calcium unless it is unhomogeneised and unpasteurised. Parsley has more calcium than milk anyways. Soy milk is no good because it is high in estrogen. I like this almond milk but I prefer the oat milk . Protein is obtainable from many other sources so not an issue as such with milk.

    • -3

Urgh. Vegans. Kill it with fire.

  • What’s the concern about plant estrogen in soy milk?
Is there also a big deal made about the plant estrogen in beers or the cow estrogen in cow milk?

    • +3

What’s the concern about plant estrogen in soy milk?

Man boobs. If you ask men with man boobs I can assure you soy milk isn't their top favorite drink.

      • There goes my master plan to sell soy milk as magic product to help ppl who want bigger boobs get bigger boobs without surgery =/

        • Plenty of overweight men will be happy to donate their boobs for boob transplants. Boobs free to go home for a market looking for boobs.

    • -2

dementia & alzheimers. there were studies done on populations that ate a lot of soy products and they had higher rates of alzheimers & dementia than those that did not eat a lot of soy products.

    • +1

What’s the concern about plant estrogen in soy milk?

There is none. It's a maligned trope for meatcucks and other pusguzzlers to feel more manly about the fact that they essentially still drink some mummy's breastmilk.

"In conclusion, extensive clinical data published over the past two decades shows that in men neither soy nor isoflavone intake, even when exposure occurs for an extended period of time and exceeds typical Japanese intake, affects levels of total testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol or estrone."

Soy is a big part of the Asian diet, especially in Japan. In Japan, you don't see guys with big man boobs. Cow's milk, on the other hand, contains a lot of hormones in which the only purpose is to help a calf gain weight quickly.

    Another suggestion… Australia's Own Barista Almond / Milklab - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/694207

  • Tried soy and Almond milk for coffee, just can't stand the taste. I don't know I'm old fashion I love milk doesn't matter if it comes from breast milk :)

    • Do you feel compelled to purchase every deal on OzB?

    • I - on the other hand - don't like cow milk in my coffee after having it with all the soy milk nutiness.

  • I don’t like any milk in my coffee 😅
