that 5950x is a steal compared to on release prices.

    • +4

Agreed! It's a fantastic CPU at this price point. With 32 threads, it's running my 3x VMs like a champ.

    • +2

buy it is about $870 every where

    • What was the release price?

  • +1

don't forget to get liquid cooler

    • +12

Decent air coolers (ie NH-D15, AK620, Assassin III, probably lower-tier ones too) can handle the 5950x fine. It's quite an efficient chip, and certainly not a 12900k.

      • I've built a 12900k rig with an AK620 hit about 85C under stock full load. Solid cooler.

      • Stock maybe but as soon as you flick on PBO even the Arctic LF2 420 struggles.

        • Have you tried PBO with undervolting? You'll generally get the same performance with a nice little drop in temps. Should take some of the load off the cooler.

          • @AEKaBeer: Yes didnt make huge differences. Zen3 is far more ambitious in its quest for higher clocks than Zen2 was at the expense of higher heat output. The bigger coolers just give the boost algorithm more room to boost for longer until it reaches steady state, Air coolers throttle much sooner.

          • @AEKaBeer: PBO + undervolting doesn't provide good single core performance and it affects the normal use a lot (gaming).

I am using PBO2 now and that still does require a good cooler.

    • +1

On a Dark Rock Slim (a smaller air cooler) I can barely get mine to hit 80C, even with prime95. And it idles between 30-40. So I think most brand-name coolers will work just fine. Though maybe I could convince it to get hotter if I tried messing with PBO2 settings, but that looks so tedious - out of the box it does a great job.

    • Cools just fine with an old Noctua D14, on my 5950x, using a Graphite Pad in place of thermal paste :)

5950 needs to be cheaper still, maybe $720 price point
    i9-12900KF is cheaper
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/185262199657
    and better
    https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i9-12900KF-…

    • +21

I agree 5950x could be a bit cheaper but userbenchmark is an internet meme with their pro Intel bias so don't believe the crap they write. It is definitely better in gaming but some productivity workloads it's still behind the 5950x.. 🙂

      • -4

Don't be silly - maybe if you are running decompression all day go with the 5950x
        Otherwise 12900FK is ahead
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhI9tLOg-6I

        • +9

12900K may well be faster, and competition is great, but userbenchmark is indeed utter trash though.

        • +16

Dude you lost all credibility once you linked to userbenchmark…

        • 5950x is also better for running VMs. Efficiency cores are not ideal.

For most people Intel is the better option.

    • its slower but uses less power… The 5950 can be air cooled

      • 12900k can be air cooled quite easily. I'm running it with a dark rock pro 4 and having no issues at all. Just depends how hard you want to push it and overclock

    • +5

User benchmarks is such a slum, I wouldn't trust much of what they say, they are Intel fanboys to the extreme.

It should be the best CPU for your use case is what you use, whether that be Intel or AMD, so take that site with a grain of salt.

  • +3

Gearing up for the April 20 release date on the 5800x3d me thinks rrp is $449usd if we were lucky to get that exact price in Aussie dollars be nice $449usd = $604au

    • +3

      Plus tax. Probably $699.

      All in AM5 for me. i7-3770 > AM5. Can't wait for next gen AMD.bahahahahahah.

      • +2

AM5 will last a long time but an i7-3770 is a pretty slow CPU in 2022

        • -3

it is still current and relevant

          • +1

@dcep: Try playing a 2022 CPU heavy game.. it will be a stuttering mess.. sorry.. older games will run just fine.

          • +2

@dcep: How does it feel for a i3-12100 to run circles around your CPU?

            • @brosk1s: Dunno, my friend has a 5900x and my 10 year old i7-3770k opens Facebook at the same time as his PC.

              • @dreamscene: its better for the involvement to use things as long as you can.. well done.. AM5 will last you another 10 years because it will be a big jump up :).. i myself needed the faster CPU sooner and always will for work and games.

            • @brosk1s: my pen is feels shorter by 2" after reading this

did you gain 2 inch with your superior CPU?

      • i have a i7-3770K and upgraded to a 3700x and it's still streets ahead of the 3770k. now i'm just waiting for this 5950 to dip a bit further to just upgrade inplace.

if you always wait for the next big CPU, you will never stop waiting.

good luck with the 3770. I'm sure you don't need that extra power since you haven't seen the need to upgrade.

        • i7-2600 still decent enough for a few general purpose VMs. :D

I'll wait till it dies then maybe move the vms onto a 3700x (current gaming computer with 3060ti) and then get a mainstream gaming CPU (such as i5-12400F currently so maybe an i5-15400F or AMD equiv with 8 cores 3nm in a few years time)

          • @vipero: i've done something like that in the past, in the end, i realised, it's just better to consolidate $ into a single rig where i can have VMs and a beefy GPU at the same time. Of course, everyone's use case is different.
i'm still on a 3700x with a hybrid 1080. so in terms of games, I still have a bit to go for upgrades.

        • Let me know if you're selling your 3770K.

    AMD Ryzen 9 5900X $620.10 - SAVEAPRIL

    AMD Ryzen 9 5950X $817.55 - PAPR17

  • intel is releasing 13th gen later this year and along with 40 series from Nvidia

    i will hold until then

    • +1

      Pffft
Intel is releasing Pentium Tualitin i15 with MMX technology in 2024 and S3 Virge 9900 Ti Ultra is getting released not long after that.

i will hold until then and synthetic benchmarks, especially from userbenchmark.com, are out

    • In tech you can always hold and get a better product or the same product cheaper.

      • +1

that wasn't the case for sometime

      • The opposite was true for the last two years with GPUs

  • +2

I feel like the window is done though. AMD has significantly faster new stuff in under 6 months, Intel has stuff that competes in both single and multi core.

Both these processors need to be really heavily discounted to consider

    • +1

Yea I wouldn't be buying high end current gen now as next gen mid end will be better than this gen's high end and probably a lot more power efficient. You are basically buying a 5 year old platform if upgrading your PC now so close to the next gen.

      • +1

But this is good for those that don't want to upgrade their whole platform and just want a good deal for the best CPU for their current chipset I guess.

        • Spot on. The other issue is that new generation will start off expensive. And have to wait a while before can buy it. It is a cycle all over again.

          • @Smaster: but the old stuff will be discounted while stocks are plentiful… inlet's competition is bringing down prices

      • DDR5 is crazy expensive though

and you will go through the beta testing headaches of a new platform

        • DDR5 is already 2 years old. AM5 mass upgrade cycle will bring prices down. Currently Intel is the only one pushing DDR5 and when Intel 13 series launch with AM5 later this year, DDR5 should lower to mainstream prices. Manufacturing and reliability is well out of Beta stage for DDR5. As for 1st gen AM5 motherboards, you can wait 6 months for v2.0 refinements and buy then or just buy a cheap MB in the beginning and upgrade to a better motherboard 1 year from platform release for V2 refinements. Early issues on new platforms usually gets fixed very fast, usually within months.

  • +1

These are great prices but I think they'll go down further.

I'll be waiting a little longer, or checking out the 2nd hand market when the next gen launches. My PC does everything I want it to do so I'm happy, but running a 5600x at the moment, it'd be cool to get something near the sharp end for my mobo and then try and sit there for another year or 2.

    • I doubt they will drop further, they will be discontinued after this.

$600 for a 12 core CPU is very cheap, and the cost of manufacturing doesn't get cheaper just because the model is older

      • I think they will fall again when the 5800x3d is released for sure.

        • I doubt it when the 5800X3D will cost what the 5900x will

          • @CoolColJ: Which will drive the price of the 5900 down.

            • @Sxio: not with the 12 cores vs 8

              • @CoolColJ: It will. It's the same high performance customer segment. Most who were shopping for the 5900 or 5950 will now choose the 5800. Which means demand for the other 2 will fall and hence, prices will feel a downward pressure.

                But we'll see.

                • @Sxio: 5800x3d makes trade offs of clock speed versus added cache. 5900 and 5950 have more cores and higher clock speeds.

I don't think the 5800x3d will cannibalize the higher end parts unless gamers were chasing a few FPS from the slightly higher clock speeds. People who know they need heaps of cores wouldn't drop down to 8 just to get the benefit of extra cache, unless they have VERY specific use cases that benefit from it.
