Cancel Registration After Sell to Interstate Buyer (NSW)

Some guy from interstate expressed interest in buying our car, which has the registration renewed recently. It's early days, he's planning to fly over to look at a few cars.

He mentioned something about cancelling the registration to get some money back, pass it on as discount because he will need to pay for new registration in his home state.

I'm aware of notice of disposal after selling a car, but that's not cancelling the registration. Also, I think once cancelled, need to return the plates to RMS which means the buyer can't drive the car in NSW.

So, is he for real?

We have sold cars to interstate dealers before, they never mentioned something like that (or may be they got the refund?). The process was surprisingly straightforward, they called to ask about the cars, then organised mechanics to come for inspection. Digital contracts were emailed, we signed then money appeared in our account the next day. Few days later flatbed came to transport the car.

Also, I think once cancelled, need to return the plates to RMS which means the buyer can't drive the car in NSW.

Definitely an option in Vic. Hand the plates into VicRoads and receive a prorata refund on registration fee.

You can get a temporary permit to drive a vehicle without plates.

  • Don’t think you can cancel it without returning the plates.

Without plates and sold, it’s not really your concern what the buyer does to drive it legally. They probably need to get some sort of permit to drive it, but that’s their problem not yours.

It’s possible that if the buyer is looking at a few cars they may have transport organised to pick up the car along with others.

  • Get them to cancel it after buying it.. what happens if they pull out after you cancel?

    • What usually happens when you pullout?

  • Hope the money cleared before the car was taken away.

Did you leave the plates on the car?

He'll find out when the toll bills and speeding fines come in

  • you don't cancel it, let him take it to his home state and he will get reimburse at his state car rego center ie vic roads.

    • Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

  • Was it an Indian accent working on an oil rig?!?

  • Would prefer to sell the car at agreed price, without factoring in potential registration refunds.

Such a tricky situation (without understanding the process). He would want the rego paper signed immediately after the sale, which means I can't cancel it, he's the new owner. On the other hand, I obviously don't want to cancel anything until it is a done deal.

The more I think about it, the more I think he should just keep the registration to save the hassle.

Just realised RMS (in NSW) was changed to TfNSW back in 2019.

    The options are:

    • Cancel registration before the sale, I will get partial refund, then sell the car as unregistered vehicle. This is not a good option.
    • Let the buyer sort out the refund after he has registered the car in his home state. This is the preferred option.
