There’s also an import duty of probably 5% on most goods
No import duty on iPads, or most electronics for that matter.
If there is no Australian manufacturer, the general rule of thumb is duty free.

GST on a 1000 AUD item would be 100 dollars, so there is still an extra 100 dollars being charged for no (good) reason.
Au prices also factor in fluctuations in currency

Also blame the greedy distributors such as Ingram micro, synnex etc, who blame the cost of freight, and the size of the country vs low population, plus higher Australian wages.
To be fair, freight and labour IS expensive in Australia
But you can buy apple direct from apple in Australia so how would the greedy distribution companies be at all related to apple pricing?
They r prob referring to price discrepancy in general and not so much the general price stranglehold apple has.
the ipads are not made in australia so someone has to pay for them to be shipped here.

@SBOB: If I ship something from here to Asia using my DHL/FEDEX/TNT account its more expensive than if I ship the exact same items using my customer's DHL/FEDEX/TNT account to him in Asia.

The ipad goes from China -> US, or China ->AU… shipping costs are not a basis for any 'cost difference' comparison in this case

It's on sale at the moment on Amazon US, usual price is $799. Add in the 10% tax and it's about the same price.
Amazon US and Walmart have a huge sale across Apple products this weekend.
It's called Australia Tax. Whenever things get here will be more expensive we are being shafted. Even intangible items such as software that does not need shipping is priced higher in Australia.
The AU price includes GST
US prices do not include their respective state based sales tax
