Gift Cards for Work Bonus

I am lucky enough to be the recipient of 4 x $500 gift cards of my choice, for winning a work incentive. I can't get liquor, but would like to spend some on liquor. In the Oz Bargain world what would be the best way to maximize these gift cards?

  • 1) how would they know? what if you ‘lost’ them and they somehow were spent?

    2) you can if you believe you can

  • I can't get liquor, but would like to spend some on liquor.

Because you're not yet 18 years old to buy alcohol or ?

    • Company wont give liquor cards as an incentive.

Give me the 4 gift cards as a present and I'll go and buy you as much liquor as you can drink in a session.

Just get coles/woolies giftcards, both have bottleshops these can be used at.

    • From Coles:

The Coles Gift Card is redeemable at Coles Supermarkets and Coles Central stores nationwide. Coles Gift Cards are not redeemable on Coles Online or at Coles Express or Liquorland.

Purchase the Coles Myer Group GC these can be used in First Choice Liquor and Liquorland.
If getting Woolies ones make sure they are WISH GC as they can be used to purchase alcohol.

Or just spend the gift cards on groceries and speak $2k of your own money on grog.

      • Yes so many choices the OP could do indeed…..

    • The best choice imo is prezee swap card. You still get tax invoice as opposed to say ShopBack portal (and it’s the only reason I am think people still want to gift traditional gc)

Don't think that matters, OP is receiving the cards, not buying them.

If you can pick you should be picking Visa gift cards anyway.

Are you going to declare those gift cards on your income taxes? If so you might want to spend it on things you would have bought anyway.

    • They will be a fringe benefit declared by the company, unless they are a bit dodgy. So the value will count towards anything being means tested only.

Visa Giftcards sound like best option, any Ozbargain deals out there?

I would question whether a Visa gift card (or for that matter, a Mastercard gift card) really is the best option.

You will struggle to use it at online merchants, as Visa / Mastercard gift cards do not support 3D Secure, and a lot of merchants and payment processors will require any payment cards to support it before attempting to redeem funds. You can get around this by linking the gift card to a PayPal account and then using PayPal at the checkout.

The other issue with Visa / Mastercard gift cards is that they are susceptible to random people redeeming the funds on them without your knowledge or permission (which is sometimes referred to on this site as "hacking"). I have gone into this in more detail here, but it is a problem that happens from time to time, and Visa / Mastercard gift cards are particularly susceptible, due to their design. I suggest you also have a look at an older Coles Gift Mastercard forum topic, as a lot of people were hit with fraudulent transactions and some struggled to get any money back, as the terms on the Mastercard gift card is unclear as to whether you can actually dispute any fraudulent transactions.

An EFTPOS gift card is not a bad idea, as you can redeem it pretty much wherever EFTPOS is accepted. Sure, you cannot redeem them online and you must have the physical gift card with you whenever you want to redeem funds on it, but no one can redeem the funds unless they have the gift card with them (unless they skimmed the EFTPOS gift card and then duplicated the gift card or something more sophisticated like that, but I digress).

To answer your question as to whether there are any prepaid gift card deals, I am not aware of any at the moment, but here are some ideas for prepaid gift cards that are available in $400 or $500 denominations. There are plenty of other prepaid gift cards (e.g. Westfield Digital gift cards, Westfield EFTPOS gift cards, Coles Gift Mastercards, TCN EFTPOS gift cards), but their maximum denominations are quite low, so it is not worth mentioning them here.

OnlyONE Visa Gift Card $500 $7.95 Woolworths, BIG W, Officeworks The OnlyONE Visa gift cards sold at Officeworks do not come with a PIN. That means you must be able to sign to authorise an in-store transaction, and some merchants will not allow this. Woolworths and BIG W (and presumably EG / Caltex Woolworths) will not let you purchase some gift cards using an OnlyONE Visa gift card, and you cannot use it to make payments at the ATO.
Vanilla Visa Gift Card $400 $9.95 Coles Vanilla Visa gift cards do not come with a PIN. Vanilla Visa gift cards are apparently sold in a $500 denomination, but I have no idea where you can find them.

Older versions of the Perfect EFTPOS gift cards cannot be used to purchase some gift cards at Woolworths and BIG W (and presumably EG / Caltex Woolworths).

Green Mastercard Gift Card $500 $4.95 Card.Gift Card.Gift is operated by TCN Group. Card must be saved to Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay and used in-store or online. I have no idea why Card.Gift stock two almost identical digital Mastercard gift cards.
