Is It Okay to Buy a Brand New Car ($30k) if You Have to Park on The Street?

Thinking of buying a small suv. Will park at fairly busy road in a bayside/south-eastern suburb, Vic. It's not right next to the highway but has 2 hours parking limit. Cars parked on the streets are mainly small cars. Seen a few years old i30, Mazda 3, Corolla.

Thanks in advance for you input.

    Depends where the street is.
Are you on a main road, or a quiet back street where there’s minimal risk from passing traffic?
Will your car stand out making it a target for break-in, or do you live on a street where most cars are of a similar or better standard?

      • -1

Of course you are going to park your car on the street.. somewhere!

Yes, but OP is asking about parking in a "riskier" location (fairly busy road) for longer periods of time (up to or potentially greater than 2 hours)

Sure, you might park on a main street when you are ducking into a particular shop, but that's only for a matter of minutes, not long stretches of time like you would at home or work.

Agree that if OP is worried about where they park their car (risk of damage, theft, etc) then get an old car. What is getting the new car achieving for them?

        • +1

If the car is going to get damaged, it's not a selective process of, if a car is new it'll get damaged, if car is older it won't… there might be more emotionally pain if a new car is damaged, there must be a cognitive fallacy/bias for this, but can't think of it right now…

          • -1

@SF3: Haha. I was thinking more that if they're worried about the car getting damaged, get a car you're going to care less about it being damaged. I know financially it shouldn't make too much of a difference (cost of repairs/excess likely similar), but again if you care less about it being damaged then depending on what/how much damage there is and how it was damaged, you may not even get it fixed if it's an old car.

I know I'd be pissed if I got a new car and it got damaged.

        • All roads are risky.
          All car parks are risky
          All drivers are risky
          Even garages are risky

          I rest my case

  • Depends on suburb. Are we talking Frankston, Footscray, Werribee, or Armidale, Malvern, Brighton?

    • +7

driven in all those suburbs the former your more likely to have your car 'jacked and robbed' or broken into however the latter is full of slow incompetent drivers who will likely rear end you or swipe your mirrors when street parked and no they wont leave a note.

    • Reasonable to assume we're looking at Bayside suburbs or surrounding ie. between Elsternwick to Mordialloc I'd say.

Suburb? Type of street? Type of car even?

    Not if you're an apprentice.

You should make a poll. In one weeks time, you have to do whatever the winning poll is.

  • +24

no never get a new car unless u can garage it

    NEVER

    end thread

    • garage or just off street?

      • +6

garage or just sell ur car. and not a normal garage must be a double

even used cars must be garaged.

        unbelievavble. the humanity.

        think of the children people

        • +7

If the garage doesn't have purified air at 50% humidity and a few plants to keep the car company then do NOT get a new car.

        • What are you talking about. Who use garage to park a car? Where i live, families of 3 or 4 live in a 4 or 5 br house with a double garage choose to park their 2 brand new cars on a council strip / street and use their garage for a party room instead.

    • +16

I wouldn't get anything better than a beater if I had to park out in the elements

      • +4

        That is just ridiculous.

        • +5

As is parking out in the elements.
          Have you seen UV damage??

          • +7

            @reactor-au:

            Have you seen UV damage??

            Have you seen reality?

If people who had to park their car in the elements didn't buy new cars, the new car market would be a fraction of what it is.

Cars are designed to last for a very long time if looked after, even out in the elements. It's when people can't be bothered polishing them, and doing appropriate maintenance on the interior that issues arise. Even then, by the time most of those issues even start to show up, the car has been sold on.

            • @photonbuddy: You are correct in that most couldn't be bothered.
And those that can afford a new car every 3years probably have a double garage.

Did you also know that all waxes and sealants and ceramics recommend applying in the shade to a cool dry surface?

              • @reactor-au:

Did you also know that all waxes and sealants and ceramics recommend applying in the shade to a cool dry surface?

Well … it says so right there on the bottle!

Are you suggesting that people without a garage to store their flash new car also don't have a cool dry shaded spot either?

                • @photonbuddy: Chances are high yes

                    @reactor-au:

                    Chances are high yes

If you believe this, then there's not much hope for you, I'm afraid …

                    • @photonbuddy: So you look for a nice tree or you look for a parking garage at the local mall? Please do tell

                        @reactor-au:

So you look for a nice tree or you look for a parking garage at the local mall? Please do tell

Well … you see, we often have these things called driveways. These are often found right next to these quite large things called houses. Houses don't let the sunshine through!

Alternatively, if you live in a tent, then you get up nice and early before the sun rises, and do the job.

I'm not sure what Lala land you live in where you think people couldn't possibly find a cool dry shaded place.

As I said, not much hope for you if you believe this twaddle.

                • @photonbuddy: My son was in this position, in rental, no off-street and road parking first in, best dressed, he wasnot happy and moved even with a 2nd hand car

My son was in this position

I accept that there are people who would need to go the extra mile (or Km!) to find a spot to apply there polish and other protectants, but it's not like you have to do it every other weekend.

      • And how much time do you spend driving out in the elements? Park undercover at work?

        • Not a lot. I work from home.

why get an ASX over a 'small car' anyway? that's your bad decision, not parking it on the street. small 'SUVs' are often less utilitarian than their equivalent hatchback, with worse fuel economy and handling and less storage space.

if you must buy an ASX, get a second hand one? it doesn't make a huge difference but i wouldn't want to have a brand new car with zero marks on it and leave it on a timed parking street where you'll have muppets trying to parallel park fifteen times a day behind and in front of your car.

      /thread

      • +1

Narrator: but the thread did not end.

    • +4

To answer the first part of your question, I have compared among small cars and small suvs. The things that were important to me was more space inside the cabin, bigger cargo space, higher ground clearance, safer due to the relatively larger size and better stability with larger tyres and being heavier than small cars.

And for why I am buying a new car instead of a used one, I have had so much trouble with used cars and selling my current car due to engine failure. So, I have decided to go for the cheapest new car with the longest warranty.

      • +1

SUVs generally have less stability than sedans. You have a higher centre of gravity which means easier to flip over lol

I don't think $30k gets you a proper AWD anyway either.

ASX comes in 2WD and AWD, even the AWD is not going to give you that much more stability.

        • They stopped making selling AWD versions a year ago or so.

          • +1

@Imitation: It wouldn't have made much difference anyways.

At the end of the day this is a generic car with generic features…

maybe look at the Lancer sports back for similar space, cheaper and probably more safe only if marginal.

Both ASX and Lancer engines and power train tech are ancient by car standards, they are from 2007 and hardly any changes. You probably won't miss much meaningful features by going second hand, that's if the second hand market for these make any sense financially in current market.

      • cheapest new suv with longest warranty = mg zs = 22k

  • cant wait to see a new ASX locally, ill know its you

  • Car break-ins are more opportunity.

Leave a golf bag in a car or luggage and theieves will breaking.

Happens slot in city and even nicer suburbs

  • +13

Shoot out the closest street lights.

A study recently outlined in The Conversation made the surprising finding that cars were substantially LESS likely to be broken into on unlit streets than well lit street because thieves don't carry torches because shining them into cars would attract attention to what they are doing, and without illumination they can't see whether a car is worth breaking into, so they do their breaking in on streets that are lit well enough for them to see whether there's anything in the car worth taking.

So I guess heavily tinted windows would have the same effect.

Yes, seriously. This is OzBargain, would I kid you.

    • +2

How recent was the study? Do thieves carry phones? Phones can be used as a flash light?

      • +5

        Nope thieves only carry fleshlights

      • +2

Yes, sorry, I was using the term "torch" in its generic sense as a device that gives out light to help people see at night. I didn't mean they literally carry around sticks with a ball of flammable material on the end that had been set aflame for that purpose. Its the light being shone into parked cars that gets the police called, not the thing in their hand that the light is being emitted from.

The study was recent enough that its purpose was to look at what happens in the scenarios of streets brightly lit all night versus streets dimly light all night verses streets brightly lit until say midnight when no-one much is afoot any longer then the street lights turned off to save power to reduce power bills for the local council and for environmental reasons. People on foot at night want good lighting to feel safe. And they thought that brightly lit streets made their parked car safe, but it actually didn't.

  • +2

Good starter car to learn the economics of self transport.

  • +1

Maybe OP wants bubble wrap or cotton wool for the car to feel safe on the street? As a brand new (sheltered life) car may experience intimidatIon from other cars that had grown up from living on the streets…

    Get a tougher looking car?

    • I suggest the OP tie kerosene soaked rags around the tyres to prevent the ants crawling up and eating the car's candy ass.

  • +3

How does buying an ASX (or any car) change the 2 hour parking time limit?

  • Are you parking for 2 hours?

    Should be fine.

Parking under a tree is bad. Some trees leaves will eat thru duco pretty quick.

  • New weird and wonderful questions everyday.

‘I’m a taxpayer, You’re not paying for your parking space it’s not fair’
‘I’ll never park my new car outside’
‘I don’t care, park it wherever you want an ASX is rubbish anyway’
‘Just make sure you get ultra mega ceramic paint protection from the dealer so the leaves don’t ruin it’
‘It’ll be broken into or written off if you park it on the street within 3 months’
‘Gonna be a pain in the butt moving it every 2 hours, get an e-scooter’

Pick your favourite. It’s just a car, but it’s also $30k that’ll be worth a lot less in a few years no matter where you park it.

  • +1

Next post - My car was stolen when parked on the street and I have no insurance - what to do?
Seriously does it matter what you pay for your car? If you're only spending $30k park it wherever the hell you like.

    • If you're only spending $30k park it wherever the hell you like.

For some, $30K is just a penny. For some, it is $30K. You have a point. So thus the OP. So I wouldn’t ridicule by just the price point of it.

  • +1

Buy a car that you are comfortable with but won't cry when it gets dinged in carparks. Sister bought a new car and in the first week 2 people opened their doors against it at the shops lol

  • +1

I told my sister to buy a 2nd hand car as she parks on the street for work.
She did not listen and bought a brand new car.
In 2 years it been broken into twice with the windows smashed to steal stuff inside, the 3rd accident when she went to the car it was pushed several parking spots as someone did a hit and run on it.

Do yourself a favor and buy a 2nd hand so you don't need to worry about it so much if you park on the street.

  • No, it is not OK. Do not do it.

  • +12

It's a $30k Mitsubishi, you need to chill dude.

If you genuinely feel uncomfortable about it, then it sounds like you're over stretching yourself.

Just get used trusty Camry for a few grand instead.

  • Is $30K for a brand new car meant to be a lot in the current environment? Regardless, it doesn't change the fact you still have 2 hour limits.

  • +1

If u dont have a car space on your on property, whether you rent or own, dont own a car, and cluttered the streets to park it. The traffic these days is bad enuff, without selfish car owners, clogging up the streets by parking their car on the streets at their home. Consider using go-get or other car sharing services.

    • +1

If is pretty annoying when some houses have 6 cars parked in the street, can only assume the garage is a bedroom in those instances.

  • +4

The biggest issue would be insurance, as on street parking will simply ramp up the premium due to increased risk of claims!

  • Yes fine.

    Next, please.

    • After this I’m not sure we want the next question.

      • Yes that's ok too

        Next!

  • Get a second hand car that auto parks, you won't mind a scratch here or there and still have an awesome ride. Auto parking makes parallel parking soooo fast and easy. My 2015 Mondeo Titanium hatch sits a great job, but there's plenty or there. Don't bother with a new car.

  • +1

    life short. buy a GTR

  • +2

If I was buying a nice car I wouldn't park it on the street. The ASX should be fine on the street.

  • +1

Do whatever you want - it's your money……

  • I personally wouldn't park a new car on the street (30k being top of my budget for a new car). Partly because the insurance premium and partly because on my street I've seen 1 break in and on side swipe in the last 6mths.

I can understand the thought of getting a new vs used car at the moment, given the current premium for cars already in stock.

  • +3

ASX is a 2008 platform running and old ass engine, incredibly outdated with some new panels slapped on the outside to make it pretty.

Find a better car to spend your money on and park it where you wish.

    • You say outdated, I say proven engineering.

  • +2

I parked in the street with a new car for 6 years. It got hailed on once (just some minor dents, covered by insurance), and had leaves dropping and birds pooping on it regularly which was mildly annoying but otherwise it was fine.

  • Feeling great for being able to provide light entertainment for a lot of people.

  • +1

I have a 2015 cx3, parking on the street myself in a 2 hour parking zone but I have a parking permit. It's fairly busy but been parking there for more than 3 years and never had any mishaps yet!

But everywhere is different, you can't control what others are doing. One neighbour may park there for 20 years and no problems, while you can park there for 1 week and a crash happens.

Don't think it's whether it's a new car or not, but what is the likelihood of that street causing some type of accident.

But think about some other scenarios:
    - Have there been any incidents on the streets you know of?
    - Is it a nice suburb?
    - Is there criminal activity there?
    - Are the streets clean, if not, will on-goers accidentally hurls rocks and debris at your car?
    - Can you park away from possible incidents (not next to a corner but more so down the street where cars don't turn that much)
    - Can you park on a sloped curb (if the street have it), so you car doesn't stick out as much. My street has sloped curbs and cars park on it all the time.
    - Do you have a parking space? Is your household members using it? Can you make an agreement with them for you to park your new car there and they park on the street?

  • I am surprised you are not being told to get a Tesla on ozbargelon

Seems like every second person here wants to have his babies

  • If really worried about scrapes and bumps, just get a MG3 (16k) or Suzuki Baleno (19k auto), thanks to Covid, even they are keeping value.

Lot of the suggestions of buying a old boom I dont agree with, old car = easily stolen.

  • I recently got an import worth 20-25k and would never park it on the street. (Also a bayside resident fwiw) as someone above mentioned, insurance is the biggest killer.

  • -2

Well no one is going to steal your new Chinese SUV as the resale is about that of milk so it should be fine.

Might get side swiped or vandalised but it's not like it wasn't going to fall apart anyway.

  • It's fine. Just go for a drive and look at how many people park on the street in way more expensive cars. 30k is the bottom of the range in the post covid world. No one is going to take a second look at your car.

  • I would be more worried about the sun damaging the car

  • Yes it is ok, as long as I am not paying for the car.

  • +2

Is It Okay to Buy a Brand New car ($30k) if You Have to Park on The Street?

Yes it's ok, I will allow it.

    • no its not ok, I will not allow i

      it's inhumane to the cars
wont somebody think of the cars

  • +1

I wouldnt drive it if its too sunny, will damage the paint

raining, forget it will damage paint too

if too cold will damage the paint

    too hot too

must be 20 degrees, 48.9 percent humidity, cloudy, but not too cloudy, at dawn,

  • +2

Can’t even get a decent used car for $30k. Park it where you like, same risks as every other car on the street.

  • I wouldn’t stress. Within 2 weeks it will be scratched or side swiped regardless of where you park it. The new car curse is real.
