    These are the 2016 model.

    • +2

Each one has an ethernet port to add a device - the newer ones don’t (but the hub points gain the advantage to use as a google speaker)

Great deal, how does this compare to Huawei?

    • +8

you shouldn't get detained in Canada using these

      • +1

I have a pet corgi, should I be worried switching to Huawei?

        • +3

Only if you live in Hawaii

          • +1

@Astonie: Are you guys speaking a different language or am I missing a joke here?

            • +1

@dust: Dark Joke about China covid workers killing a Corgi because the owner had covid. Also referencing a Huawei executive being detained in Canada for corporate espionage.

              Not sure about Hawaii…

am using these.. and they are great… they also have a LAN port which newer models dont have

    • -5

they also have a LAN port which newer models dont have

The router units on the new ones do have a lan port.

      • yes but that's only the router the satellites do on this which is more useful. I have a mix of the old and new.

          • +5

@jv: Not everyone, No, but those that do would wanna know….

          • @jv: good to know JV lives in a mansion.

            • +2

@Thypeople: How else will JV have enough time to sit and sh*t talk on Ozbargain all day?

            • @Thypeople:

good to know JV lives in a mansion.

Nah, just need a good wifi….

              • +11

@jv: THe internet on my farm wasn't good until i moved the wifi to the barn.
                Now i have stable wifi

    • Me too. They have been excellent for many years now. The google home app is great too for setup and notification of issues with all home internet. For example I get a my phone if my internet goes down, and I can see how effective each node is.

One of the best tech buys I have made.

Also I have one near my gaming PC and I connect via a cable. Because of course I’m so good at gaming that milliseconds make a difference in me knowing when I’m getting killed

Hey this is great, do you know how this compares to Huawei?

    • +2

Well, compared to the newer models, these shouldn't be listening to you…

      • +2

Google? Not listening to you? Mate, this isnt a week ago.

  • -1

OP, please post how this compares to Huawei….

    • +12

      More democracy I believe

      • LEGEND

  • I have Tenda MW6 which works well, but every now and then 'clogs up' and needs a reset. So I've set them up to reset daily at midnight.

Would these be more stable, or do they also need a reset every now and then?

    • +1

In my experience, only every now and then. These are relatively stable (and honestly these are, in my experience, more stable than the second generation). These are also great with an Ethernet back-haul. I have a mix of several G1 and two G2 and this has allowed me to connect two of the G1 and the main G2 router to Ethernet and the rest to WiFi. The points auto-detected Ethernet and has been generally great for WiFi coverage.

According to the Q&A on the page, an Australian customer was given UK plugs (which is logical given it's through Amazon UK), and their request for AU plugs was denied. So the cost is increased by the three adapters that would be needed to use this kit with AU GPOs.

OP, please respond with how this compares to a Chinese brand like Huawei?

    • +2

These can be used in the US I believe

  • +2

i've used this since first launch, they "were" great. rock solid with no issues.
Although range left to be desired, I bought 1 more to try to get better range, and seemed to work.

But more recently, which kinda coincided with the shift to google home from google wifi app, it has not been very reliable. I've have to reset it monthly as they would slow down.

    Unsure why.

    • +1

      Planned obsolescence

    • +1

I had a similar experience but wasn't sure if I'd attribute it to the app transition or just age, or maybe my needs changed over time. It did prove to be a binding constraint with the shift to WFH in our household, and even moreso when I had gigabit internet installed and my devices were still lagging/etc on Teams/Meets/Zoom/etc. Switching to the Asus XT8, whilst definitely not as user friendly or straightforward, has blanketed my place with that good high speed wifi 6 goodness.

    • +2

Not mine, I have 5 of them, working perfectly

  • +3

    As above.

These are fantastic initially. Up and down with firmware though.

However after a year or two, Iike the Nest models expect stupid problems. You'll be rebooting…. You'll be resetting them…. WiFi will drop for no reason. Some talks it's maybe a memory issue that comes over time.

Wouldn't dare touch an international Router either.

    Has been discussed on Whingepool.

    • I'm not having any luck finding those threads on WP (maybe because it's 230am). What were the concerns with using an international router?

      • +1

There's 2 main threads in the router section.

As far as international… It's 2 fold, some models have different WiFi channels the other issue is Warranty. And Google definitely falls into the 2nd category.

Amazon is good however, but I still wouldn't dare touch international models.

  • How are they compared to TP link Deco's? like m9

    • Even M4 is way better than this in terms of speed. This is 802.11b if the description is correct. It doesn't support even 11g or 11a. I can't see any reason buying this other than it being google.

      • Wikipedia says 802.11ac on the 2016 first gen models, so it's either a listing error, or the backhaul

        • If it's 11ac then it's much more usable.

          • @MajorEvening: Confirm it's AC. But it's dual band so the 5Ghz is shared with backhaul.

    • Sorry forgot to answer your question. I think M9 is a much better mesh in terms of speed. It's triband which means its backhaul is more stable. Again Amazon lists it wrong as dual band. If you check the box photo you'll see it's triband. But it's more pricey.

    • +1

I was considering the Google product for ages but went with the Deco M9. No complaints, super easy to setup (can get it up and running in 10 mins out of the box), never had any issues, coverage is great, speed is great, each AP has a couple of Ethernet ports.

Not sure in the differences in specs but I'm pretty impressed so far (about 18 months).

  • Paying more than $200 for a wifi 5 mesh is not a good idea. In my opinion, getting the 2nd Ruckus wireless AP wifi 5 with that price is much better. I bought 2 Ruckuss R600 AP for only $72 and run in mesh mode. They are excellent.

  • I purchased these years ago for a bagillion dollars. This is a good deal, I also like the software you can use with them to limit the kids internet access, setup schedules etc.

  • I have over 40 devices around the home using the wifi.

Would these be able to cope with that?

    • Yes, you will be fine

  • Might be unlucky, I bought 2 sets, one new one used, in total, and 2.5 years later half of them have died. I am waiting for one more unit failure and change to a different brand.
