Is Covid Travel Insurance to Vietnam Mandatory?

Hello OzBargainers, I have booked tickets to Vietnam next week. I have visa, tickets, passport, PCR test bookings all lined up and ready to go.

But is Covid travel insurance something I'm required to get as well?

Do the customs at the airport check if we have bought Covid insurance or is it you just do it at your own risk? On Smartraveller, there doesn't seem to have anything stating it is mandatory. I have no interest in buying it if it's not mandatory. I just don't want to be denied entry if I don't have it.

If anyone or any experienced travellers know any info about this, it would be great to hear what you know or your experiences.

Thanks

Isnt Vietnam on level 3 on smarttraveller and therefore most insurance policies exlude it already? Or is that only reserve for level 4?

I was back from Vietnam last week. Covid travel insurance is not required, do it at your own risk.

Before boarding the plane, you need to complete the VN health declaration and download their pc-covid app to your mobile phone.

Complete VN health declaration and save QR code in your mobile phone for border check in Vietnam - https://tokhaiyte.vn/

    • Is the tourism industry operating fairly normally now?

    • Thanks for info

    • Hey, I'm trying to confirm that insurance is no longer required, where did you find this info? Thanks

  • Call their consulate and ask

Personally wouldn't want to be stuck in a foreign hospital as they rack up charges knowing your insurance won't cover you.

Also, depending on which country, whether you go and come back with the same amount of organs.

      • This is also true

  • Not the right time to VN,Covid-19 still there.Hospital in VN is awful and terrible.(once you enter you are done).

  • I've found websites insisting it is mandatory and others that say not. One site suggested travel insurance was mandatory, as dictated by the Ministry of Health. They refer to the following:
"Vietnam’s Ministry of Health on March 15 released COVID-19 entry procedures for foreign arrivals as per Official Letter No 1265/BYT-DP. "
There is a link to that doc which I parsed to Google Translate and there is no mention of travel insurance or it being mandatory.
The Aust. Govt's Smartraveller just says it's a good idea
However, the "Official Website Vietnam Tourism" states that it is a requirement.
So I'll be damned if I can work it out. I think the travel insurance industry are probably promoting this confusion but maybe I'm being unkind.

    • Ok, greetings from Saigon my fellow Ozbargainers. So I didn't get Covid travel insurance for Vietnam and I wasn't asked for it anywhere. I reckon it is BS but having said that, I wasn't asked for my RAT certificate either (which is mandatory) so maybe I just got a slack immigration officer. I doubt it though, there is no way an immigration officer will be able to confirm you actually have a real travel insurance policy rather than something you got the neighbour's kid to photoshop.

      • Can confirm they did not check for my covid travel insurance but did check my RAT cert. From 15th May I think Vietnam is abolishing covid test for pre departure.

  • Anyone using Luma Vietnam pass for COVID insurance? https://vietnampass.lumahealth.com/. Quite cheap at 25USD, I think it works well as a compliment if you would normally use credit card travel insurance with no COVID provision.
