  • VA metal only I'm guessing

    • Seems to be, according to Australian Frequent Flyer.

Still can go Fiji and New Zealand though ;)

    • Yes correct, I can’t book Singapore Air

      • Need to call customer care for Singapore Air.

        • can book SQ for only some routes. Some glitch I think. Did you check if 30% off applies to SQ?

        • No you don’t have to, it is showing on virgin website

          • @T-man: Yep, booked on virgin website using points last night on SQ business class
Tried now to see if price has been discounted but doesn't look to be. Either it's not part of the 30% offer or a glitch. My guess not part of the offer.

@Schumi5: I'd be pretty shocked if it was tbh. they just came back. there's no shortage of demand

            • +1

@Schumi5: Smart move. Those business class points fares will be gobbled up quickly once the public realise they added business

              • +1

                @Onemoredeal: @capitalshark
Yep when I checked this morning the same flights were gone. Glad I pulled the trigger when I did.
130,000 + taxes for business return to Phuket.

Worked out alot cheaper than if I was to transfer velocity to Krisflyer as would in the past.

Also for those wondeirng once you book your flight and receive the confirmation email, there will be the Airline PNR for SQ and you can use that to then manage the booking on the SQ website and do your seat selection.

                • +2

@Schumi5: And you get real business with a skybed and Sing lounge access. not Virgin Domestic Business to Bali or Fiji which is a complete waste of points. Virgin don't even have lounge access at International anymore

One way to Fiji for 15,600 points economy & 34,600 in business class sounds like a great deal.

    • I am not getting those rates. Brisbane - Fiji is 33k points. Which route and dates did you try?

      • Brisbane - Fiji is 33k points

Which is a return flight in Economy excluding tax, so same as Schumi5

        • I'm getting 66k for a return (33k one way)! What am I doing wrong??

          • @dealer453: @dealer453

I just did a search for BNE to Nadi. Depending on which flights you choose the prices are different.

Direct is 12,400 one way economy + taxes or for business 24,800 one way + taxes

Selecting the flight via Sydney will set you back 15,600 + taxes one way economy
Or for business 34,600 one way + taxes

So looks like your best bet is to search for dates that have direct flights available in the class you want.

            Hope that helps.

  • Business rarely gets promo so great deal, not sure how their soft product is now. Save for the medium to long haul, I would want a lie flat to make the most of it

    • +1

Sadly Virgin doesn't have lie-flat Business Class any more

      • Thats a shame.. I converted all VA points to KF at start of covid, problem is the expiry but figured it would be better for intl flights

  • Just booked reward tickets yesterday, wondering if I can cancel and rebook again

    • +3

I cancelled mine and rebooked again.

      • Let me guess going to Melbourne?

        • That’s Thursday ha (after a long absence). Nah, to Brisbane; never been

          • @kerfuffle: Interesting. I'm looking at Mel-Bris as well for a status run.

            • @nightelves: Make sure you do it before June 30!

              • @kerfuffle: Yeah for the extra status. But still deciding whether it's worth it or not. Decisions decisions… 😩

                • @nightelves: Flights are cheap; might as well

                  • @kerfuffle: I like how you think 😂

                  • @kerfuffle: Didn't you get the status extension from Virgin? End up not flying because of the status extension.

                    • @nightelves: No, because I was on Red. Now on Silver after last week's flights and will be Gold in a month's time

                      • @kerfuffle: Oh makes sense. Gold will be awesome now that Betty's Burger is coming on board.

            • @nightelves: Here I was thinking I was the only one doing status runs ;)

            • @nightelves: Looking at booking Melbourne to Gold Coast. Just wondering, what's a status run? Is there something I should know or do before I book to maximize benefit? Cheers

    • +2

You can but note that travel after 1 May will incur a cancellation fee (4,500 Points or $35 charge per guest per booking) per this page.

I have a reward booking in June that I could cancel, but I don't think the difference in savings is worth it for me taking into account the cancellation fee (I'd still end up with a saving but I'd rather just not worry about it).

      • I cancelled a June Rewards booking last month and didn’t get charged a fee; only thing I lost was the credit card processing fee. This was for Business though

        • Interesting! That does go against what their pages say..

EDIT: I do suppose this line could be interpreted the other way.. Maybe I should risk it after all?

For travel up to 30 April 2022, we’ll waive cancellation fees for cancellations made by the travel date or 30 April 2022 (whichever is earlier).

          • @rith: And also, it was last month so maybe this got introduced this month? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Too late in my case ha

            • +1

@kerfuffle: I'm reading further down the page and it says this:

If you cancel your Reward Seat booking for travel up to 30 April 2022, we’ll waive cancellation fees. Changes to your booking must be made before the date of travel or before 28 February 2022 (whichever is earlier).

The Points used for your booking will be refunded to your Velocity Frequent Flyer account. If your booking was paid in part by credit card, this portion of your booking will be refunded to original form of payment. Refunds will be processed within 21 business days. Refund amount excludes booking and credit card fees.

Which leads me to believe that there will be a cancellation fee.

Maybe you got lucky? I don't think I'll risk it but thanks for the info :)

              • @rith: I got the points component refunded in full; just waiting to see what the tax/cash part will be. If it's $35 per guest per booking, then that means I only get about $15 back haha

              • @rith: Confirming that I didn't get charged a cancellation fee of $35 per guest per booking; everything bar the credit card processing fee was refunded in full

                • @kerfuffle: Was it an international or domestic flight? International flights are flexible until December so that could be why.

I just did some calculations and I think I'll come out on top by about 5000 points (or 10000 points if I take an extra $35 hit), so I'm going to cancel and rebook anyway. I believe 5000 points is worth more than $35 so it's probably worth it after all.

                  • @rith: Domestic for June long weekend.

                    • +1

@kerfuffle: Are you making the same flight as me? 😂
                      I'm doing that too!

Hoping I get the same luck as you re: refund but I won't be too mad if not as I think I'm still on top.

                      • @rith: Hahahaha I’m flying Sydney-Brisbane return

                        • +1

@kerfuffle: Hey mate in case you were interested, I also got a full refund including the portion I paid by card. Pleasantly surprised! I guess they don't really check when the flight is, as long as the cancellation happens before the policy change? Who knows!

    • +10

i'll have as many man dates as i want. sod off.

      • Andrews runs your life, well guess what, not mine!

  • Struggling to find any business availability at all (even with other airlines). Not really up to date, so wondering if there is just generally low award levels ATM or are they getting snapped up quickly? Probably need to look harder, but nothing Melb to / from Fiji in Oct.

    • business rewards are rare at the best of times and usually get snapped up pretty quickly.

if you're booking as far out as you possibly can there's usually availability (eg: 11 months from now) and you'll sometimes get lucky with stuff like a week or two out, but by and large booking a long way in advance is about the only way to get good value business reward seats.

i paid for business mel-dps return in august, i just had a look at the same flights as a reward ticket and they exist, but it's 183,000 points one way per person (rembering this is a 737 with the domestic business product on it) - for comparison i can get to barcelona on singapore airlines for 157,000 points with the full lay-flat experience

to answer your original question - both. reward seats are low in number, and they get snapped up quickly, especially for "good" dates

      • This is all true. Just seems harder than previous, pre-pandemic adventures. I guess I'm wondering if is it worse than usual or is this standard and I've been better at planning in the past!

Point taken it may be just the region too. I reckon I went to London ~160k, so 183k to DPS is nuts… but def still worth it!

        • Too many people with too many points saved up over the last 2-3 years. It's gonna be real hard to get seats for several years I expect. Best chance to stalk them as they get released around 11 months out

  • You can't pay part in points part in cash I assume? I only got like 12k points.

    • You can pay the tax component in cash. Time to hit the Classifieds if you need points.

      • ahh didn't realise that was an option - will take a look, thanks!

        • +2

Just be careful - not saying do it or don't. But i recently sold some there and my account and their account was put under investigation. Not sure what happened to the points.

  • Thanks OP , just booked a nice kid free weekend away for the wife's birthday.

  • Ah so this dosent work for international partners paid with virgin? I was looking at thailand and a business return was 170k pt a few days ago, still the same price now.

  • Where else do they fly internationally, other than Fiji and Bali?

    • New Zealand allegedly in November

      • +1

not all towns though. only some like queenstown

  • bne to per 18600 points is that already discounted?

    • Inclusive of tax, yes.

      • +1

        thanks

  • Canberra to Melbourne return is 26,000 points (13,000 each way) Does this sound about right?

    • +1

      Inclusive of tax, yes.

      • +1

        Thanks!

  • when will VA expand the international routes? My future credit will expire soon.

    • only expecting more NZ and more pacific islands eventually

    • +2

check your travel bank. mine were due to expire in August, but surprisingly it got extended to January.

      • thx for reminding. Mine got extended to Jan as well. Thx a lot bro.

"We are extending the expiry date of Future Flight credits and standard credits which are due to expire before 30 January 2023. Your credits will be available to make bookings until 31 January 2023, and can be used for travel up to 27 December 2023. If your credit is stored in a Travel Bank, it will be updated individually and we anticipate this will be completed prior to 6 May 2022."

  • I've been eyeing an international return flight to Sydney and it's gone down by a few thousand points (~3% decrease). I guess this is not related to this deal?

Also, I have flight credit sitting with Velocity and it seems I can't use it to pay towards the cash component of a redemption. Is that correct or am I doing something wrong?

Edit: Just checked and apparently Rewards Seat bookings are excluded. :(

  • Hi, looking at flying from Melbourne to Gold Coast. 13,800 pts or 8,200 pts + $32.67.

    1. Is this the discounted price?
    2. Which option is better value, I'm assuming paying with points only but I couldn't work it out for sure.

    Thank you!

    • +2

Yep, Looks to be the discounted price. Also Generally paying for the taxes with $$ is the better value option.

      • Thank you

    • +4

If anyone else is curious, I have worked this out using points hack valuation of each velocity point at 1.8c.

In my case, 5,600 points difference to save $32.67.

      5,600 x $0.018 = $100.8

The better option would indeed be to pay for the taxes using money rather than points.

      • aren't I a dummy, never booked a reward flight before, rushed doing it, used points to pay for the taxes as well, talk about a rookie mistake. Basically paid 4 times more in points for the small amount in taxes. Lesson well and truly learnt, and no point changing coz I'll be hit with teh $35 change fee. Now trying to forget how dumb I am ;o)

  • 1 thing I'm curious, are upgrades affected?

  • +1

Good timing - can combine with up to 30% discount on Virgin Australia Points Purchases for those wanting to buy discounted points via the official channel (rather than third parties/classifieds, risking account suspension/termination)

    See post here

Can purchase up to 250,000VFF points per calendar year - currently discounted from $5850 (2.3c per point) to $4095 (~1.6c per point)

  • Do Virgin no longer fly the A330 with fully flat seats from the East coast to Perth?

    • Yep

    • Correct they no longer have any A330s

    • lol that was like before virgin went bankrupt

  • flights booked, great timing to keep my velocity status before 22nd May

  • return to Munich with Singapore Air looks good. One way business

    • not included lol. but good that you found the fare.

  • oh no! didnt realise they no longer have the fully flat A330s - man those to HK were just the best.

Any tips for searching just the reward biz flights? Cant seem to find the filter…
