It's also eligible for a free copy of Assassin's Creed, for anyone wondering

  • +3

How does this model compare with the RM850x?

    • +7

I'd go with the corsair due to the silent operation mode

    • Any comments for their performance other than fan noise?

      • LLT list puts them in the same category so consider them the same on that front

I'd go RM850x, simply because MSI is Multi-Rail, and Corsair is Single-Rail.

You shouldn't be limited in most instance(480w per GPU rail, 300w on CPU rail), but it means you will have to think which port you plug your modular cable into.

And also I have exceed 300w OC my 10850k before..

      • +1

good point that considering the 3090 Ti can pull down 500w+ apparently granted I'd expect anyone with a GPU like that to equally go overkill on their PSU choice

        • Any GPU with un-modified BIOS other than 3090ti should be perfectly safe with 1 GPU rails so really no big deal.

It is the CPU rail I am somewhat concerned (most CPU is fine though.)

(you can flash 500w vBIOS to a RTX3080 though)

Was wondering the same thing so I spent the last 30 mins doing research.

This PSU seems to have ~600rpm fan speed which some people described as audible. Probably depends on how quiet the other fans in the system are. I'm guessing it's louder than the Corsair under load but that probably won't matter when your other fans ramp up.

The tipping point for me was that a review of its electrical performance showed it had a 70% efficiency at idle, which is quite far behind the Corsair at ~78%. I went with the Corsair for this alone since most of the time my computer is on it's with minimal load with web browsing and documents. Efficiency under load isn't too drastic.

There's also the multi vs single rail diff but it doesn't seem to have much impact here. Still works in corsairs favour.

I ended up getting the RM750 from Amazon since I doubt I'll need the extra power (heavily undervolted 5600x, zero RGB, nvme ssd, overclocked ram at stock voltage and an undervolted 3080 when they drop below $999)

Factoring in 4% cashback and 10% gc discount, the Corsair was $116.1 for me. Not much of a debate at that price.

I wouldnt get too caught up at efficiency under 100w. Mobo + CPU will be pulling around 20-55w at idle and a 3080 pulls about 30w at idle. Higher end cards do pull more then lower tier at idle for some reason. 10% difference in rating might be like $2 per year 24/7

Also working out the math on a 1kw PSU gold vs plat at full power the difference is generally 2% and even at full power 24/7 you need to run it for several years to justify the extra cost of the plat rating. Obviously this isnt taking into account the better ripple etc that plat psu's generally have, just going off the cost of entry and power costs

      • I've got this PSU and can promise any prospective buyers here, that the fan is very, very quiet and is inaudible (from your chair), if you have it in a normal enclosed computer case.

I use it in a mining rig/frame set up which I keep at shoulder level and before my GPU's fans spin up, I basically can't hear it.

  • +2

I can't find info on how loud the fan is

    • same, not much info on that topic, just subjective reviews regarding the noise factor, probably same as any other PSU under load just at idle you might hear it.

      • +3

My trusty old Corsair ax860 is silent always, never ever heard it in 8 years. Noises scare me 😂

        • just picked one up second hand, looking forward to some silent performance

    • I have this fan for my recent PC build (last weekend). It's definitely audible but it's not bothering me.

  • Kind of worth considering it comes with a game.

    • but it's only expansion right? need the base game still?

      • +3

        Their website says Valhalla+Expansion.

I think you meant the Gigabyte models

      • -3

It's probably a great psu but it has msi written on the front

        • It's MSI. Not Gigabyte.

  • +2

    Thanks OP! Grabbed one.

Now just need a B550 ITX board and I have a PC again!

  • Multi-rail? No thank you

    • +1

multi rail psu minimizes the chance of burnt cables if ocp fails

      • +2

Do not remember the last that happened but I clearly remember the last time the rails maxed out!

  • +1

who actually makes this? seasonic? superflower?

    • +2

CWT. Same manufacturer as Corsair. I was debating between this and the Corsair. Ultimately decided to go for a 1kW Corsair for future-proofing.

  • Would this be a safe buy, assuming I aim to buy an rtx 4080 or something similar when they release? assuming I get a cpu like the 12600k?

    • +1

850w psu can handle the latest 3090 Ti (just) so should be right but power draw for the 4080 is only speculation at this stage

      • I've heard that the next series might consome a lot more power. So something that can only just handle the 3090ti now, might struggle with the base 4080, let alone a bit of overclocking.

    • +2

I'd just wait for the new connectors unless you need it now.

      • Yeah, i'll likely wait for an excellent deal on like a 900-1000w supply just to be safe, or wait for the specs to be revealed. But curiosity got the better of me. I haven't heard much about the new series but im very eager to know more, as it'll be the basis of my next pc build. My current pc is over 5 years old :(

        • Honestly, regardless of even the power requirements… I'd purely go for aesthetics and as mundane as that sounds…… I'd much rather a cable designed for it rather then running a whole bunch of adapters to suit. There's a bit of piece of mind to that too.

Especially if you are looking at a 4080.

  • It seems no stock at the moment:

Available at centrecom for same price + fee shipping

    • Just bought one, cheers to you and the op. I was hoping to see a rmx850 price drop but this deal is just too good.

  • is this enough for a 3080ti and i9 12900ks?

    • +1

      yup 850w should do it

  • Did anyone else put in for the Assassin's Creed: Valhalla - Dawn of Ragnarok promo? If so how long did it take for them to approve it?

    • from experience MSI can take a long time, follow up with them

    • Took about two working days for me. Hope you clicked on the final submit button at the bottom of the page after registering the product, uploading the invoice and serial number. You have to login your MSI account to get the promo keys. Download Ubisoft Connect to redeem the keys. It might also work with Epic store.
