eBay Price Match Joke: davidjones.com is a US site

I bought something last night. I found something cheaper at David Jones today, and I would like to price match on ebay. I got rejected for some really funny reasons. The customer support (two agents) are based in India, I don't know whether they are trained properly or not. Probably, their work is to reject all the price match requests.
Two reasons (excuses) they used:

  1. davidjones.com is an US site, their policy says davidjones.com.au is the AU site. However davidjones.com.au is davidjones.com
  2. The on sales product has 30% off discount, but it requires to be added to the cart to reflect the discount. The excuse they use to reject me is, "discounted" price is not valid for price match. The term they refer to "Approved Retailer’s prices after applicable rebates, free offers, coupons, competitor clearance products and stock liquidations from an Approved Retailer’s website, specific offers based on bundled pricing, or where volume or lot discounts are applied." and discounted price is product after "rebate". OMG, I am "impressed".

I want to make complaint, and I got the answer "Speak to next agent use this chat ref #". I think that's why those improper trained staff can still work at ebay as they are always "excellent"!

Based on above reasons, I think it is nearly impossible to price match anything on ebay.

I am considering to cancel the order and buy from davidjones.
out of curiosity, is this common to others, if you can share your experience?

    what the?

I had same problem as you but even more insane -

Digidirect had a lens on sale, says usual price is x then has it crossed out and says on sale price is Y.

Multiple reps said same bs. Nah we only price match against X. And wouldn’t escalate.

Finally found a rep who actually just did it on with basically zero fuss. Hard slog and totally not worth the 5% calculated on difference worth of extra discount.

    • Exactly, I don't care that extra 5% difference to be honest. I just want to cover the gap, and to avoid hassle of cancelling order. But apparently ebay don't want to keep their customers.

Hard slog and totally not worth the 5% calculated on difference worth of extra discount.

Yep…. agreed, stop rewarding the place that didn't offer the best price straight up and start rewarding the place that is offering cheap prices from the start!

Why do people not do this with Amazon too?

        • +3

Most people have prime and get free delivery, whereas most Australian retailers only offer free shipping with 100 + spend or something

          • @[Deactivated]: Many people buy stuff from Amazon that is price matched with colesworths and I'd hazard a guess most people would be visiting or getting delivery from colesworths anyway.

            • @fantombloo: Amazon's still easier than taking a drive

@[Deactivated]: Yeah, the path of last resistance makes for crooked rivers, crooked people and also crooked monopolies.

                • @fantombloo:

                  the path of last resistance

I’m on that path! Trouble is, so is the CIA…

Why do people price match online? Just get it from whomever has it at the lowest price. Give them your business because they are the price leaders. Don’t use their low price to scalp it off the competition. Reward the lower priced sellers with sales.

For me I just used it to take advantage of an all time lowest price and maxed out the extra 5% off benefit.

But yes I agree with the sentiment

Like my case, I didn't notice it is cheaper somewhere else when I bought the stuff. Instead of cancelling the order, it would be easier if they price match for it..However, ebay is shit. So ebay push me to cancel the order buy from David Jones.

    • Sometimes it's better to pricematch cause the warranty or returns policy is way better than the other company.

Unless it’s Harvey then always use the price elsewhere :)

David Jones is only dot com instead of dot com dot au 'cause they were hoping to sell internationally, starting with New Zealand.

    Source: ex-DJs staff

    • so David Jones never had .com.au before? Wow, good to know, how doggy the ebay is. They put some non-existence competitor to price match.

      • +3

They did. Dot com started in 2018

        • Not sure why I got negged for this when it's the truth. Unless it's one of my haters, who also negged every comment I've made lately.

Look to be honest here, the story would be if you had a good customer experience with eBay.

Most companies do the calculus and decide it's worth customers having a positive experience, eBay has come to the opposite conclusion.

Maybe that's why stuff like this happens…
