Looking for Advise on Basic Tablets

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can offer some advise & opinions on my options for a basic tablet.

Essentially I'm looking to get a tablet for the sole reason of reading comics….nothing more

In terms of specs

  • Screen size is by far the most important aspect. 10" is ideal. Anything less defeats the purpose.
  • Processor/ memory etc. isn't that important as the task is very basic.
  • Storage, also not that important as CBR/CBZ files are small.
  • Cost. $150-$200. I don't really want to spend too much as it's just a "toy" for me. Any more seems frivolous.
  • Reliability. This is pretty important. I'm not keen on buying junk that I have to go through the hassle of replacing every 6 months

As far as I can see there's only a few options for me:-

1) A Laser 10" tablet. I not really keen on this as worked for an electronics retailer years ago that sold Laser. They had a 90% fail rate. I still have nightmares. Not sure if they improved….
2) Lenovo M10 - A pretty safe option
3) A Chinese import like Alldocube from Aliexpress or Banggood. These seem like great bang for buck. However until recently I'd not heard of Alldocube and have never bought from those sites, so I'm a touch hesitate.

I'd love to get opinions on the reliability of the Chinese brands and what peoples experience of Aliexpress and Banggood is.

Thanks for your help in advance!!

  • Tablet with the Best overall user experience is the Apple iPad (Mini, Air, Pro).
Tablet with the Best value is one that runs AndroidOS.
Tablet with the Most usability is one that runs Windows10.

…so decide between those three options first, then we can give you suggestions to narrow it down.

Cost was only one point of many. Doesn't mean iPads shouldn't be immediately ruled out.

    • Thanks for your response. I think Android is going to be my best option.

No worries, I just needed to clarify if you needed any use case outside of reading comics.
Definitely stay away from those Laser tablets, or basically most tablets you will see for sale in BigW, Target, and possibly Aldi. Not sure about TGG, but JB Hifi and Hardly Normals won't stock cheap tablets of an acceptable quality.

So I did an OzBargain search, and here's what I found:
        - $150 Alldocube kPad Tablet
        - $190 Teclast M30
        - $210 Lenovo Tab P11
        - $230 Teclast T40 Pro
        - $250 Blackview Tab 11
        - $290 Lenovo Plus xiaoXinPad

So when you're hunting for it online, look at their specs, and for keywords above. There may be even better models than these, and they might not cost much more (they could be even cheaper!). But based on this small list, I think the one that looks most promising is the Teclast T40 Pro. Heard it is one of the better quality models from TechTablets, and it is within your budget.

    • Thanks. Unfortunately colour e-readers are significantly more than I wanted to spend. Cheers!

      • That chromebook could be good and can be had for $350 or less

A $150 tablet will be ass. Using it will feel like having brain damage. iPad is the king of tablets and the one to get. A $150 Android will feel old from the start, but a new iPad will feel new for years to come.

I have an older Teclast tablet with a Unisoc chip set. A much higher spec one is $217 at Banggood. I have had 2 Aldocube tablets and found them too slow. If you have a card like one of the ing or Citi cards that don't charge exchange fees and pay in us$ it may come down close to your target and give you a very decent experience. This is the one I would get https://au-m.banggood.com/Wholesale-Warehouse-Teclast-M40-Pr…

  • used ipad ?
