Best 5G Router

Our NBN is terrible and so I want to get 5G Home WIFI but no one offers it here.
Vodafone and Optus only have 4G coverage anyway and Telstra have 5G but aren't offering 5G Home WIFI yet (if ever).

So I'm looking to buy the Telstra 5G 400GB mobile broadband plan for work reasons so need to be a decent router to maximise the speed and number of devices etc.
I know they sell the Nighthawk M5 but is there a better or equal product without the price tag?

NBN is not an option. Long story, have got the Ombudsman on it but it will take months if not years. Essentially they need to lay over 2km worth of new cable.

  • Dont they offer home internet with rental 5G modem (that you wont have to pay for if you return to them at time or cancellation of plan OR if you stay with the same provider for a certain amount of time) ??

    • As mentioned, they don't offer home internet in this area

      • then why do you need 5G modem, if they aren't offering 5G home internet in this area?

Do you mean you need a 5G phone instead?

        • No, 5G reception is here so want to use the mobile broadband plan

@sydney1506: you are best to wait till the company offers you 5G home internet.

In the mean time use a 5G PHONE to get 5G internet.

            • @USER DC: Its for work, so I can't wait and as mentioned only Telstra even have 5G signal here. And the customer of 5G home customers is capped, so still no guarantee

              • @sydney1506: Get a 5G compatible phone instead, plenty of cheap options, may be look to upgrade your current phone.

                • @USER DC: I don't know why people are negging you. A 5g phone is the best option at the moment. Plug it into any router that supports USB dongles, to get wifi all over your house.

The 5g modems are stupid expensive at the moment for no reason, if you can even find one to buy. I think the telcos have swallowed up most of the stock.

  • Why not sort the NBN?
Plenty of options like better NBN provider, better router (the supplied ones are generally crap), etc

    • NBN is not an option. Long story, have got the Ombudsman on it but it will take months if not years. Essentially they need to lay over 2km worth of new cable.

Same boat - I've got 3x of the 400gb Telstra services data shared to 1.2tb a month as my primary home internet setup. speeds circa 180mbps-330mbps 5g.

Sim card is plugged into one the below, which is mounted to pole outside, which then runs and plugs into the old telstra adsl modem router inside the house.

Had a look at Skylink, but decided I needed something more stable wfh. This was about a year back now so maybe the stability of starlink has improved now (I know their prices recently went up as well).

@nhs84 you're probably confusing two issues. You want a 5g modem + router.

As mentioned above, the cheapest 5g modem at the moment is going to be a phone.

Plug it into your favorite router that supports USB internet dongles.

    • Sure… technicality
I need / want a proper 5G modem + router that isnt phone

        I need

        no

        want

Sure - go buy one … there's only 2-3 on the market in Australia. Nokia/Sagecom/Netgear. They're all more or less the same. Supply issues mean you'll have to live with what ever you can find.

This is my point. I asked for suggestions on devices…. thats it….

I'll look into these options. Thanks

  • If Optus is offering 4G home internet in your area then why not go for Optus? They will upgrade you to 5G when it becomes available. Regular use of internet does not make much difference on 4G or 5G.

  • They don't offer any of the services here

    • Oh well, if you dont have 4G available in your area, you wont be getting 5G anyway. You will have to look for other options thou.

I think you're missing the point.
Optus dont offer 4G or 5G Home wifi here. No 5G signal either.
Vodafone only offers 4G home wifi here. No 5G signal either.
Telstra doesn't have a 4G home wifi product, only 5G, which they don't offer here.
However, Telstra do have 5G service here so I am looking at the mobile broadband option and just need a modem and router.

        • Since you wont have many choices for a 5G modem and router as other mentioned, I bet you may be better use a 5G phone for hotspot and wait until you have more choices then.

  • I landed up going with the Telstra 5G Wi-Fi Hotspot with a 400GB 5G mobile broadband service and its working great :)
