M1 MacBook Air Doesnt Work Well with Peripherals

I got myself a M1 macbook air. Excellent machine in all aspects except that it does not play well with peripherals.

  1. I use a USB C Dock with it and while it charges the laptop and audio output to my wired headset works fine, it does not detect the monitor thats connected to the dock.
  2. It does not detect my laserjet printer

My older intel based macbook does not have any of these issues. Seeing as how popular the M1 Macbooks have been, i'm assuming there are other OzBargainers who have faced the same issue(s). If you have found any workaround or fixes for this please let me know :D

EDIT: I installed windows on an older intel based macbook and managed to run the firmware update. The dock now works with my M1 Macbook!

Is your USB-C dock faulty? https://createdtech.com/are-usb-c-docks-killing-macbooks/

Another thing that you might want to check is to see if the dock firmware is up to date. You can grab the firmware here. You'll need to boot into Windows 10 OS to use this firmware update.

and also the DisplayLink manager from here, https://synaptics.com/products/displaylink-graphics/download…

    • I landed on that same reddit page during my Google searching :D

Nothing wrong with the dock cuz it works for three other laptops (2 windows and 1 Intel Macbook). I haven't tried updating the firmware for the dock because it requires a windows laptop and the only one I have are work provided ones on which I can't install software. But looks like that's the only possible fix. Gonna have to borrow a friend's laptop

      • Can confirm once you update the firmware they'll work just fine - one of our clients at work has ~20 M1 MacBook Pros and a couple of Airs, and about 40 of those docks. Only one display output pair works, though - the M1 machines only have support for one external monitor unless you use DisplayLink :(

  • Thanks to bring this up. My M1 Macbook air is doing the same. Great stand alone computer. But it hates Dell and Samsung monitors. Loves wireless printers.
To keep it healthy: Use only original charger and cable to charge between 20 and 80%.
