What Best Bang for Buck TV for PS5 & Xbox X

My Home is full of old school Dick Smith and original Sony 65 to 70" TV's that have served their purpose for many years.
Lounge room has 3 of these on the wall so I can watch Stocks, crypto etc. and is fully setup with just about every gaming console in last 20 years (Kids have gaming parties with their friends)

Now PS5 have entered the house (Soon Xbox X) and only 50% of the games are even playable (No display) Like Assassin's Creed Valhalla cant even run.

I understand that 120hz are the next gen.

I have enough room to put up a 50" on current wall and leave my current in same place. OR get a 65" to replace one of the current oldies (and repurpose the old TV in another area.

As I am just trying to get PS5 up and running and current TV are working 100%. I dont want to spend the $1000's

Originally saw 4k 50" at Costco for $500 but only 60htz. JBhifi has 100htz 65" for $995.
Apparently these also only short term solution and dont give the full punch.

Whats the best/ cheapest for a unwanted upgrade that is future proof.

Links appreciated to Bargains!!!

It makes no sense for me to pay $1000s for a TV to play a $50 game on at $750 console. Need some middle ground advice.

You are a bit limited in range if you need 120hz now as a feature, none of the Australian Hisense models have HDMI 2.1. The TCLs have it but have the same problem the Sony X900h had, half vertical resolution so its a no go. For 2021 TVs this means Sony x85j and above, Samsung q70a and above, LG nano85 and above, All oled except LG A1. Nothing else until 2022 TV in Australia.

For actual 120hz refresh rate the TV needs HDMI 2.1 and the manufacturer to properly support it on the model. So far that's just Sony, Samsung and LG. When a costco or other TV manufacturer says "100hz" they mean motion interpolation.

edit: looking around at 50" the Sony x85j at $1400 at jb is about all you can get, ignore LG lcd TVs btw..

    • Just did some more reading. Actually its a bit more limited, the x85j has the same half vertical resolution problem at 120hz. So if anyone wants a 120hz Sony they'd have to start at the x90j.

Real HDR is more important than 120hz imo. Real HDR means at least zoned backlighting, if not individually lit pixels. In a game when a flashlight is turned and pointed at the camera on in a dark room you want the flashlight to be blinding but the rest of the room to remain pitch black. If you don't have zoned backlighting then this isn't possible. HDR happens a lot in games so you will want it. A lot of cheap TVs say they have HDR but they can't adjust their lighting for certain areas of the screen, so it's not "real" HDR. It's worth paying extra for if this is going to be your TV for the next 5+ years.

    • Old gamers remember that trick of turning up the brightness in dark areas to see the enemy in dark grey and avoid getting ambushed.

    • I'd take 120hz over HDR any day

  • Some good advice advice. I wouldn't worry too much about 120 hz, 120fps is not really going to be a factor for triple AAA games and anything graphically impressive.

Totally agree I'm playing Horizon FW and I have to get it to run at 1080p just to get a stable 60fps on my 77C1 and somehow Sony is trying to push 8k out of it in the future lol

  • Lounge room has 3 of these TVs on the wall so I can watch Stocks, crypto.

    !!!
    rektrading is that you?

  • 120 fps is way overkill, 60fps is all you need

if you are talking about ghosting that has to do with response times not FPS, any tv with good response times and you are sweet

personally i'd ditch the tv entirely and get a 4k projector like the px748 or px728 (if you have light control in the room)

  • Be aware that not many games will run at 4K 120hz, and also that most 100hz/120hz TVs will not display 100hz/120hz at 4K resolution; only at lower resolutions like 1080p. Potentially things like Dolby Vision (Xbox only) or HDR would be more useful

A good 4K 60hz TV would be fine and for your budget I would be looking for the biggest TV with low input lag - ones with 'Game Mode' or similar are a good indicator

    • Based on your info. I assume this willtick the main boxes. whats your thoughtshttps://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/hisense-a7g-65-4k-uhd-led-smart-tv-2021?queryID=0acd6dc1158753484ab7a2d34323eb8d&objectID=522328

      • That seems reasonable for the price.
The rtings.com review of the lower model A6G shows the input lag is a low 10ms which is great

I know it's slightly out of budget but also take a look at the Hisense U7G on sale for $1199 - better in terms of contrast, brightness and colour (due to the full array local dimming and quantum dot tech), and has gaming specific features such as VRR up to 60hz
Personally I would go for this model for the colour improvements and best bang for buck

Next best above that you end up looking at TVs like the Sony X90J for around 2k or the LG C1 OLED for 3k

If you can get discounted JB gift cards from here that can help a little
