Practice Training Aid Only And Should Not Be Used For Full Contact Training

This is a wooden sword, is it not?

    • Correct. You can use the foam ones for full contact which is much safer.

    • Yes, similarly metal blades (sharpened or not) are for display. A shinai (bamboo hollow sword-like with give) to be used for actually sparing.

Bokken used to practice form and whether you believe/agree or not, to train the mind too.

Anyway, if not already apparent, this is a nice product

      • Bokkens are regularly used for sparring. Just not a crappy one like this.

      • In general I agree i.e. generally you should not hit people with metal swords even if blunt.
Though I practice HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) and we do use blunt metal or wooden blades in sparring, though only when wearing the approved and appropriate gear.

I was hoping to get a couple of these to have a go at sparring, mainly just for fun and seeing how this type of sword handles. Wonder how this cheap one would go or how long it would last.

EDIT: Yeah, I really should have read the listing before commenting "Practice Training Aid Only And Should Not Be Used For Full Contact Training"

        • I've got a few red and white oak bokkens that I use for karate and iaido, including one really similar to this. The carved "blood groove" in this one makes it pretty much useless for any sort of contact as most of the thickness and weight is taken out of the blade. A normal white or red oak bokken without a blood groove can take a real pounding. This one would snap like a twig. The blood groove also makes a whooshing sound so it sounds like a metal katana which I also use. Unfortunately the whooshing sound happens regardless of your technique whereas with an actual katana you only get a good sound if the cut is correct. So it's actually counter productive using it. Mine honestly sits in the cupboard gathering dust.

          • @richy_o: Not sure how significant the blood groove will affect this bokkens strength^. Given you own both I can only take your word for it. In any case this bokken states it’s for training purposes only, not full contact, which would make sense given what you said.

^ For metal katanas it’s strength can be maintained while having a blood groove.

            • @MuddyClear: The blood groove in the katana is mainly to take weight out of the blade to make it more balanced and still maintain the strength.
This wood bokken is cheap, the oak is not very dense and the groove makes the blade seem very light.

                Perfect for kids then

          • @richy_o: Thanks for the info.
I currently train with spears, rapier, long swords and dagger, but think a wooden bokken (if not cost prohibited) would have been fun to try out as a long sword alternative, but will give this one a miss

Hoping my Asian parents would not see this

    • too late bonk!

  • Am I the only person who thought "Wait, you can actually buy these? As kids, we would've belted the hell out of each other"?

    • Were you not properly supervised as a kid? This bokken is a dangerous weapon and should be treated as such.

      • +1

everything can be a dangerous weapon it just depends how you use it

      • Proper, responsible parental supervision today would have been called out as "the helicopter parenting of a crazy person" in the 80s.

        • No one will call you crazy for watching your kids play with a potentially dangerous weapon like a bokken

Literally no different to finding a big stick at the park.
In fact having handled one of these, i'd say i found sticks that were probably more solid.

    • its a stick, they can be found off trees and have been used for millennia by children to beat each other without having to pay money
