Hilma af Klint x BLUNT Umbrella Metro $65 + $10 Delivery ($0 Purchase In-Store) @ Art Gallery of NSW Shop

1120

Recently moved to Sydney, and thanks to the endless downpour and wind, I have been looking desperately for a nicely priced, sturdy umbrella. Whenever someone asks "what's the best umbrella to buy" this is the only brand ever mentioned.

So finally, I have found a Metro Blunt Umbrella for $65. Comes with a funky print by Swedish artist Hilma af Klint. The art printed on the umbrella is called Group IV, The ten largest, no 2, childhood 1907. Up close it looks like some parts of the umbrella is dirty or unfinished, but that's actually due to the texture of the art piece, I still think it's beautiful.

Art Gallery of NSW members get 10% off - $58.50. A regular membership is $95

Purchasable online with $10 shipping or can be found in store. I purchased instore today and they seemed to have over 7 left.

Title sounds like a drinking game dare. Say it as fast as you can. Profanity ensues.

  • -4

    That's the price of 13 Kmart umbrellas…

    • +17

And has the lifespan of about 12 of them. Add several for the art and you come out ahead.

Brollies are one of those things, like pens, where you do get decent quality for cheap but you just seem to be able to hold on to it for longer if you pay more, probably because you care more for it. I've bought a few OzBargain favourite Woodworm umbrellas several years back. No idea where they ended up but I don't have them any more. I still have my ten year old Blunt umbrella.

      • +2

my kmart one still going strong after 5 years. the only thing i see that can break umbrellas are very strong winds that flip them. and under those conditions, the umbrella is unlikely to keep you dry anyway.

      • +7

I've had my wormwood and similar cheap umbrellas for probably over 10yrs no issues.

Bought a fancier expensive one, totally agree with you it will last longer - because it's more expensive it never gets used.

        • +5

Fancier ones are also too colorful… I like my umbrellas solid black and brandless like my soul, helps to blend in with the corporate crowd.

        • Yeah I got no issues with woodworm for 10+ years. The best investment I've made making bunnings and corporate golf umbrellas look like junk

      • +1

Hmmm I would beg to differ Woodworm brollies are the best and they do last and cheaper than this

        • One of mine has already died and the one in the car is pretty rusted.

    • +3

Perhaps Kmart ones are good quality. But I've bought two el cheapos…one handle is snapped off, and the other has a loose spoke. It's been only two months! (Although the weather has been disastrous…)

  • +13

Not really a fan of the print but that’s a cracker price for blunt metro

    • +8

How much are the sharp metros?

    • +1

Yeah, I'd be all over it if it was any of the flat colours. Even some of their other designer editions look nicer to me, but this one doesn't really click with me.

    • +16

      It's 50% off the RRP

  • +2

    Thanks OP, got one!

  • +4

It is a bargain. Stop comparing BLUNT umbrellas to cheap Kmart ones. But this design really turns me off so I'll give it a miss

  • +1

These are really small just fyi. Barely covers a single person. Maybe ok for a 10 yo

    • -6

yeh i think buying this is the same as buying an expensive watch. its for show. utility wise it does the same thing.

      • When it's pouring down rain, no one stops and says, "My, what a might fine umbrella you have. Is it a Hilma af Klint x BLUNT that was exclusive to the Art Gallery of NSW?"

Although while you're dry and fine under your golf umbrella, you may think, why do people buy such stupid little umbrellas?

        • I routinely get stopped to ask where I bought my umbrella. I had bought a Senz umbrella

  • Thanks op. Missus bought one.

  • +2

this one is only auto-open, yes? not auto collapse.

haven't tried one of these, but I feel like my Clifton auto-up and auto-collapse is more than good enough, at $35 or so.

    • +1

Yes auto open, no auto close. If you wanted to know, I was very impressed with the mechanism when I tried it

Bought two Blunt Metros 8 years ago. First died after 3 years, and the the second after 5 years for the same reason - the silicon around the handle stretched and they no longer retracted. Having said this, Blunt replaced both despite being out of warranty and we still have the replacements today. Awesome customer service.

Correction - bought 10 years ago

      • +6

It's called decent service. You'll find it's more common when you buy things based on how little they cost due.

  • +2

Blunt umbrellas are great, but boy is it chunky. Even it’s smallest one is about twice as big, when closed, compared to a normal umbrella

  • Member discount not working. Classic is better but this is great for Metro.

    • -1

      Mine's working.

  • +1

    Got one, thanks!

  • I'll one up the Kmart ones with the $2 ones you can find at the basement of Arther Daley's in the Melbourne CBD that are about the size of your palm. 15 years later, still going strong, although some of the rods have become slightly bent due to age, and one of the threads holding one of the wires came off during a gusty storm. But can't really tell from the outside. So $2 umbrella, still going strong. Made in China.

  • How is this compare to the OzBargain golden standard: Bunnings umbrella?

    • +5

This Metro doesn't take up the entire footpath when open, and you'll find it is harder to take people's eyes out with the covered/protected tips. But it won't provide the coverage to protect your shoes from the rain.

  • Nice. Was looking at this umbrella because of the odd-looking shape but the price made me want to look away. Didn't know that this umbrella is actually really good. Now that the price is lower, I have purchased 1. I like the decoration too, it makes it look unique compared to all the bland-looking umbrellas out there. Nothing could still beat the Bunnings umbrella though.

  • +2

Thanks OP - ordered one to be delivered to WA (hopefully it makes it across the Nullarbor).

I actually bought a Blunt umbrella from the Art Gallery 4 years ago when I was living in Sydney. Got caught in a torrential downpour and took cover in the gallery, and paid some ungodly sum for one of these umbrellas (albeit navy). This one is significantly less expensive and will be for my partner.

IMO it’s head and shoulders above anything else I’ve seen on the market. As others have said, the thing that kills most umbrellas is being blown inside out. However, to the Blunt this is merely a temporary inconvenience.

  • +10

Whoever finds this when I leave it on the bus will be delighted

  • Cheap for blunt but this will barely protect you from rain…

  • +3

    If I didn't already have two blunt umbrellas… :)

    • I already have 3 and didn't stop me from buying another 2

    • Yes but this one collapses so I am buying another 2

  • +2

Bought one for the wife as a gift. Love the several Blunt umbrellas we have and always prefer to have one in each car and some for the house.

Unfortunately Melbourne taught me to value umbrella quality.

  • +3

Thanks OP, always wanted a Blunt.
This is perfect for the city and I like the art.

  • -5

$65 for an umbrella is not an OZ Bargain deal. Trust me, it should be $6.5

  • +2

Can somebody confirm that it’s still there

  • +1

Good gift for the mistress thanks!

    • So you're still cheating on your partner after being sprung here and on Reddit?

  • -2

Can someone with a kind heart share a membership number?

  • Thanks OP! Got one for my wife

  • Did anyone get an email confirmation of the order. I paid using PayPal and got that payment receipt, but never any confirmation from the Gallery. Bought on the day this deal was posted.

  • +2

I got a shipping confirmation email (with a tracking number)! I’m excited!

  • Mine got refunded today :( WAHHHHH #ozbargainproblems

    • Refunded too
