need help finding cheap but good notebook

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Hi all. this is my first post submitted - hoping I haven't placed this post in the wrong place.

I was looking for a cheap but good notebook. not a laptop….the little ones. mainly for personal use eg. looking at this website etc.. wld also like to be able to use drop box and Google drive. chrome etc.

I have desktop and laptops so any feedback on pros and cons on a notebook wld be great so I can make n informed decision.

Also if any of u know of another cheap website than the above (there are only 2 notebooks avail on the above site and going off some of the comments on the thread I got it from I don't know whether I want to chance using them

not interested in an ipad or tablet of any type I have my galaxy…that's enough touch screen for me….I think….unless again anyone gives me a good argument for them….however keep in mind I type 120 wpm on a 'normal' keyboard….but these touch screens slow me right down :-( which is frustrating to say the least.

Look forward to ur clever replies…I've been reading some comments from some of u….u really know ur stuff. I'm purdy good at using computers generally even built a couple of websites that with perseverance got to the first page on Google….but as far as purchasing and inner workings of the computer…I'm completely lost.

I think you're after either a netbook or an ultrabook.

Netbooks are small, cheaper than ultrabooks and have low computing power.
Ultrabooks are small, have a thin profile (like a MacBook Air), more expensive than netbooks and also have more computing power than netbooks.

FYI, notebook = laptop and also due to the smaller dimensions of netbooks/ultrabooks you'll find it different to typing on a normal sized keyboard.

    • Thanks

  • Thanks housecat and vt. I think ur right a netbook is what I'm after….I am genuinely concerned abt the keyboard tho so do u believe thru pad to be just as easy to type on given what u said abt the keyboard being different.

I'm sorry about the xo its automatic and now embarrassing..however id like to say that u ppl don't know me or my circumstances lets just say
..walk in my shoes for a day and u will be eating humble pie for quite a while. its a genuine question meant for specific ppl who know what answer to provide.

obviously u who have replied with ridiculous posts have shown me and other users that u don't have the knowledge to answer the question only the knowledge and an incredible amt of spare time to provide what u think is a reasonable response.
    Its not.
Ur wasting my time and the administrators time so please grow up and find something else to amuse yourselves with.

Don't put me off this site go to some chat site or something for 12 year olds. I can't change who I am or how I post for ppl like u I can only hope there are more genuine users out there.

Vt do u know of any good deals on the netbook and what specs I'm after. like I said price is important quality and performance is too.

    • You should also think about how big you want the screen. To ease your mind about the keyboard and to also determine what screen size you want, your best bet is to head down to a retailer who have netbooks setup as display stock (ie. Harvey Norman). This will allow you to type something to see how the keyboard feels and to also decide on how big or small you want the screen.

Most netbooks are very basic units with a low power processor so there aren't many specs to choose from. Performance is very subjective and varies depending on the individual but if you're going to use it for mainly web browsing then it should be fine.

Sorry, I don't really know of any deals for netbooks and also the link you have provided are refurbished units so keep that in mind if you're thinking about purchasing from them.

      Best of luck!

      • Thank u…I can't get to shops for a while but the comments below are helpful too as are urs

Well if you dont want an ultrabook due to costs, and you dont want a 15.6inch or a 10inch because its either too big or too small, then its simple, just look for the 13inch notebooks.
The one below from msy has a second generation i5(it'll have lots of power, well compared to a netbook's atom processor anyway), a 1GB graphics card (for moderate gaming) and most importantly a 2 year warrenty.

    Cost:$659 pickup
    Aspire AS3750G-2414G64
    CPU: Intel 2nd Generation Core i5 2410M 2.3GHz(Turbo 2.9GHz)
    OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
    RAM: 4GB DDR3
    HDD: 640GB SATA
    Graphic: Nvidia GT520M
    1GB Dedicated VGA
    Screen: 13.3” LED Screen
    * 2yr Warranty * DVD Burner
    WecamBluetoothWiFi6 Cell Battery

    • Thank u but can't get out there it will have to be delivery and Italy too expensive. I Cld look at 2nd hand I guess perhaps I will look at ebay dorm a netbook

From the viewpoint of older, failing eyes I would second the comment on screen importance.

As a GadgetMan I bought both the original OLPC & the first NetBook - EeePC 4G Linux: but am typing this on my aged 14" iBook.

Perhaps you can further my education. I have a basic [$99] Optus ZTE 7" Tablet. I had thought that a good 10" [Retina quality screen] tablet on a stand with a good (full sized?) wireless or plug-in keyboard, with Android & Linux OSs might offer similar flexibility to what ASUS offer with their ' Transformer'.

I travel with my EeePC (& Tablet too lately) - it is convenient to take to my local library with their free web access.

For younger eyes there are some good deals on second hand netbooks - and replacement batteries are now cheap.
I have just ordered a basic 4400mAh (33Wh) EeePC 4G battery for U$22 on eBay; to replace my original 5200mAh unit that was largely stored sealed in the fridge at 40% capacity.

    • Yeah altho my eyes aren't too old in age the constant comp work has caused them to age quickly. thanks for ur information ppl been very helpful
I could always get a tablet. I think I saw one for 99 this morn don my glasses and plug a keyboard in….ur all terrific thank u
