How to Gain Travel Points for Travelling in Sep 2022

Hi guys,

I am planing to travel to Turkey in Sep 2022 Most likely will use one or combination of these airlines (Emirate, Qatar airline, Qantas, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus) but I may consider other airlines if I find a cheaper price at the time of hunting tickets. FYI, 2x return tickets (for me and my wife) including all the internal flights will cost around $6000 AUD.

So here are my questions and your assistant is highly appreciated:

  • When would be the best time to purchase these tickets?
  • I never had a credit card or even those they give travel points. If I want to be smart on this accession to earn, to use points, what would be my best options? Do you reckon to apply for any type of credit card? If so, which one please? I personally not a fan of credit card (never had one) but seems this is my only option to earn, use travel points.

My main points to how to be smart this time and earn something out of spending this amount.
Thank you.

  • The issue with frequent flyer points is that it’s a way to lock you into an airline or an airline group.

So this then limits your choice of cheaper flights. Plus cheaper flights often give less points even with the airline group up you use.

If you don’t travel much then the points can also expire before you use them. So programs let you exchange the points for gifts or gift cards. Others might give you more details.

As for travelling without having a credit card - don’t!. You need at least one.

Usually the best travel card, the ones with no exchange transaction fees often don’t give points.

Airline groups. Many airlines link with each other with frequent flyer groups. Eg OneWorld where flying on any airline in that group gives points on the airline program you have joined. Fly American Airlines get points on Qantas frequent flyer (but not always full credits).

If you don’t fly often, just go for cheapest tickets, with best service, cheap flights often are with crap airlines, but not always. Research the quality of the airline. Stuck in uncomfortable surroundings on long flights isn’t IMHO a bargain.

    And get the credit card!

    Best time to purchase tickets:

    • Most are already advertising sales for Sep 22 so the best prices are close to what you see now. However, keep checking Skyscanner or Google flights for deals
    • But this also depends on which FF points/miles you wish to accrue, this will limit which airlines you select. Airlines also have different alliances (groups) they are part of, which allow redemption on each others networks as already mentioned above

    Which Credit Card:

    • Which CC you get will depend on which FF program you are building, and which bank has the best intro offer on at the moment
    • For example, if you wish to fly Emirates/Qantas, aim for CC's with a big QFF sign on bonus - NAB had one recently but I think it just finished. But you could have gotten 100k QFF points for $3k spend, and double if both you and missus got a CC each

You can go to PointHacks to get a full 101 of all FF points accumulation. Good luck

From a points perspective, good luck getting premium seats for travel 6 months away. Savvy flyers would be redeeming seats as early as possible ie like 11ish months in advance. Savvier flyers book and plan their holidays around the premium seats they have booked.

I would go on singapore - Brisbane to Istanbum is only 86k Krisflyer points, just bought that route return recently for me and my partner and there is a tonne of availability.

You can probably rack those points up via credit cards if you can both get them (and manage minimum spends)
