  • Is it possible to make a purchase with bigw gift cards?

    • No.

You can give it a go, but you as soon as you swipe or scan or enter the details for a Woolworths Group gift card at the checkout, you should get an error message (and probably a gentle reminder from staff that you cannot use any Woolworths Group gift cards to purchase gift cards at BIG W).

Also 20x for Apple gift cards (last page).

    • Lol well spotted, I stopped at page 32 to write this post and didn’t bother looking at the rest of the catalogue…

      Deal has been updated, thanks!

      • Hey mate. Do you recall where the post is (from late last year sometime IIRC) that has the points conversion on the 20x Apple Gift Cards? It was a $:ERD type conversion, e.g. @$20 = this many points, $50 = this many etc.

I actually found a bunch of the $20-$500 variable cards at my local Big W so I'm thinking it's time for a new MacBook Pro soon ;-)

        Cheers

        • +1

Are you thinking of the Coles deals or Woolworths deals where OPs list how many points you earn from one gift card?

Considering you're being given 10% of the gift card's value back to you in the form of Everyday Rewards points…

Denomination Bonus Points Earned Bonus Points Value
          $201 0 0
          $30 600 $3
          $50 1,000 $5
          $100 2,000 $10
          $200 4,000 $20
$20-$500 20 points per $1 loaded onto the gift card (max 10,000) 10c per $1 loaded onto the gift card (max $50)

          1. My assumption is the $20 denomination is excluded from the deal, as it is traditionally excluded from Apple/iTunes gift card deals and it is not pictured in the catalogue.

Nice. Was wondering when the ‘monthly’ Apple Gift Card deal would drop.

  • +3

Going to have to give this a miss, mainly due to: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/651164

  • May I ask if apple GC can be stacked with cashrewards/shopback to save more? Thanks.

    • Cashrewards: yes. One of the CR reps on OzBargain confirmed with Apple that paying for an order using Apple gift cards is okay to stack with cashback. It also says this on the CR page.

Shopback: no idea. It should be fine, as it works with CR. However, it is not explicitly permitted on the Shopback page, so if automatic tracking screws up, Shopback won’t help you.

      • +1

Thanks. Will stock some apple GCs and wait for cashrewards then.

  • Anyone see any problem with buying around $3,000 worth of the variable value gift cards, and clicking through from CR to the Apple site to buy a computer? The one I want (Mac Studio) is currently on an exclusion list, but that seems to be for the recently announced products, that obviously changes over time.

Means I can buy a CTO (configure-to-order) Mac Studio and effectively get 10% off (11.5% off with CR), which isn't possible any other way. Standard 10% off Apple deals in stores like JB never include custom configs, only the standard models.

I did do this when Woolies had 20x points recently for $300, just checking if I'm missing anything trying to do the same for 10x the amount this time!

    Cheers :)

    • I'm doing this exact thing.

Previously, I've bought an iPad Pro with this method with in-store pickup, but I shouldn't see any difference.

P.S.: I saved more by purchasing through my uni's Apple-On-Campus program.

      • Hmm interesting thought, my sister is studying at uni full time. So if I load the value onto her Apple account, she could buy at student discount of 7.5% off, and pay with credit that was bought at a 10% discount…so about 16.7% off in total.

        • Apple has not been strict in checking for a valid student ID – you could technically order it. Check to see if her uni offers a similar Apple-On-Campus (AOC) program. AOC program is cheaper compared to the Education discount as it's considered an Employee Purchase Program (EPP).

Just re-reading your original post, note that CR and any other cashback portals have excluded the newly launched products, which includes the Mac Studio.

          A quick price comparison, Mac Studio (10 Core CPU/24 Core GPU/32GB RAM/1TB SSD/FCP + Logic)

Store Price Savings% from RRP Paid with GC Effective Savings with GC
          Apple Store $4,128.98 0% $3,716.09 10%
          Apple Edu $3,358.99 18.7% $3,023.09 26.8%
          Apple AOC $3,236.99 21.6% $2,913.29 29.5%

Edit: I haven't checked my figures but I believe they're right.

          • @settings: How do you get those discounts? The regular Apple Education store looks to me to be 7.5% off RRP, and the AOC store about 12% off…

            • @symean: Probably due to the fact that I’ve added Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro to my order. Which if you get at retail price is way more.
My figures are based off of the config mentioned in my earlier post.

You’re right in comparing from a baseline model. I was just sharing my price table.

              • @settings: Sorry didn't see that on the end of your config. I'm planning to get almost the same model, but bump it up to the 32 core GPU. One of their more modestly-priced upgrades…

                • @symean: Fair call. I don't do enough video editing, to justify the upgrade. Might be good for future proofing though.

I've been eyeing the ship time on this and each day that passes, it extends by 3-7 days.

  • Can I use bigw gift cards from smartspending portal to buy apple gvs?

  • Does Everyday rewards do cash out for money like flybuys? Or do I just purchase apple gift cards and the points discount is applied on the total once I checkout?

    • +1

With Everyday Rewards, you have three redemption options:

      • Money Off Shopping: have your points automatically converted into discounts that you can apply in multiples of $10 on future eligible shops at anytime throughout the year.

      • Bank For Christmas: have your points automatically converted into discounts that you can apply in multiples of $10 on future eligible shops during December.

      • Qantas points: have your points automatically converted into Qantas points.

You'll notice that all three options automatically convert your points into either future discounts or Qantas points (and this happens as your points balance hits a multiple of 2,000). This is different from Flybuys, where you can stockpile as many points you like and manually convert them into Flybuys Dollars (or Velocity Frequent Flyer points or other redemption options) at any time you want.

You'll have to pay for the Apple gift cards in this deal upfront in full, but you can redeem some or all of the available Everyday Rewards Dollars on future eligible shops. For example, if you purchase a $200 Apple gift card, you'll need to pay for the full $200 upfront, but you can then redeem the $20 in Everyday Rewards Dollars off a future grocery shop at Woolworths, or a future alcohol purchase at BWS or a future fuel purchase at participating EG / Caltex Woolworths locations.

You cannot use your Everyday Rewards points or Everyday Rewards Dollars to pay for some items, including gift cards, SIM cards, mobile phone recharge vouchers and tobacco. You won't have the option on the payment screen to redeem Everyday Rewards Dollars, even if you are also purchasing an eligible item (e.g. a chocolate bar, a t-shirt) in the same transaction.

Thanks for the helpful detailed reply, I now understand how the reawrds work as I'm a newbie to the Everydays Rewards system (only been using Flybuys for Coles)

I'm gona have to pass this deal until Coles does it, since the money will only be used for future shopping and I have no plans for it at Bigw or Woolies. Also I've heard incidents of rewards points being hacked and redeemed which makes the Flybuys cashout more safe imo.

  • Can I use this gift cards on JB Hi-Fi website or are they to redeem instore only? Is there a limit of amount of gift cards to be used JB Hi-Fi website?

    • +1

It depends on which type of Ultimate gift cards you end up with.

If you end up with the Visa version (the one pictured in the catalogue), you should be able to use either in-store or online.

You can only redeem one Ultimate (Visa) gift card per transaction at JB Hi-Fi’s online store, as JB Hi-Fi processes these gift cards as Visa cards and split payments for multiple Visa cards (or other cards from financial institutions) are not possible for online purchases.

      • Having said that, you may not be able to use them to purchase JB Hi-Fi gift cards through the JB Hi-Fi online store, as some OzBargainers found that JB Hi-Fi were cancelling some gift card orders. (That’s why I said should before.)

JB Hi-Fi is currently not on the Ultimate gift card exchange facility, so you cannot exchange Ultimate (Visa) gift cards for JB Hi-Fi digital gift cards unless you go through JB Hi-Fi themselves.

If you need to redeem multiple Ultimate gift cards at JB Hi-Fi, I suggest you take a look at this comment.

If you end up with the older EFTPOS version (which is not pictured in this deal and I have not seen at any BIG W stores near me lately), you can only redeem them in-store.

EFTPOS cards can only be redeemed in-store, and they are not on the Ultimate gift card exchange facility at all.

If you need help distinguishing between the Visa and EFTPOS versions of Ultimate gift cards, I suggest you look at this comment.

      • So these can be exchanged only for a limited amount of shops and JB is not on the list. And I can only use one card like this because it will be treated as a normal VISA card.
So I need to buy a bunch of them and physically bring it instore and redeem them there, right?

Sorry for asking but I don't want to end up with $1000 worth of useless gift cards I can't use.

        • +1

So these can be exchanged only for a limited amount of shops and JB is not on the list. And I can only use one card like this because it will be treated as a normal VISA card.

          Correct.

So I need to buy a bunch of them and physically bring it instore and redeem them there, right?

          Correct, unless…

If you want to go down the rabbit hole of trying to buy JB Hi-Fi gift cards on the JB Hi-Fi website, you can always try to purchase JB Hi-Fi gift cards on the JB Hi-Fi website either by:

          • Adding the Ultimate gift card details directly into the checkout, or
          • Adding the Ultimate gift card to Apple Pay first, then using an iOS/iPadOS/macOS device to go to purchase the JB Hi-Fi gift card.

Having said that, I cannot give you an iron-clad guarantee that either approaches would work. In all likelihood, it will probably work for the first gift card purchase, but you may need to wait another day before you can get another gift card. You’ll also likely have more success using Apple Pay on the JB Hi-Fi website, as it seems that JB Hi-Fi seems less likely to cancel JB Hi-Fi gift card orders on their website paid via Apple Pay.

Whether this (likely) hassle is worth it is up to you.

Sorry for asking but I don't want to end up with $1000 worth of useless gift cards I can't use.

Redeeming 10-20 Ultimate gift cards in one transaction at a physical JB Hi-Fi store is not really a big deal. (I think OzBargain’s record is 81 TCN/Ultimate gift cards.)

If the item is not stocked at that store, you can always use Ultimate gift cards to buy physical JB Hi-Fi gift cards in-store, then purchase the item you want later either in-store or online. Having said that, some staff will not let you do this, because you’re not really supposed to use Ultimate gift cards or TCN gift cards to purchase JB Hi-Fi gift cards, so YMMV.

To be fair, I am assuming you have a physical JB Hi-Fi store near you that you can access!

@WookieMonster: Thanks, this is all very helpful and clear now!

  • Just in time, I’ve been meaning to purchase a new laptop, now just whether to get the air or the pro 14” is the question..

    • Two very different laptops! The Air is perfect for consuming content whereas the Pro is for people creating content and needing more firepower eg 4K video editing etc

      • The Air M1 can do a very good job for most 4k video editing, M1 is amazing. The M1 Pro 14 I would say is for high end professional work, if you're not doing it for a living then I would say the Air suffices enough.

  • How do you use the Visa version GC online as there is no expiry date to enter eg 12/22

    • +1

The expiry date you use for purchases or adding the card to a mobile wallet is 12/29.

      • +1

Ahh I was guessing 12/99 so close LOL

  • Has anyone managed to use the Eats on Deliveroo or Menulog. I’m still having issues.

  • +1

Bought my first Apple Gift Card with this deal today. Thank you. That MacBook Air is looking mighty cheaper with this + student deal.

Cheers @wookiemonster - thought nookiemonster would be fun to.

  • Hi i was wondering if the 20x points for apple gift cards is still active, I called Big W today and they said they are unaware of such a promotion

    • Ends Wednesday according to the catalogue. One store I went to didn't even have signage about the 20x points promotion, I just made sure to check my points activity and balance after each purchase.

    • The deal for Apple gift cards should be active, because it is in the catalogue. To be fair, I wouldn't expect all BIG W staff to know about all catalogue promotions, particularly since this promotion is buried at the end of the catalogue.

The easiest way to test whether you'll earn any points on Apple gift cards is to grab at least $100 in Apple gift cards, scan them with a registered Everyday Rewards Card at a self-service checkout, then go to the payment screen. As soon as you go to the payment screen, there should be a message popping up on the screen saying "You have earned $xx off a future shop" and there should be a points counter in the top right-hand corner that shows the number of points you'll earn in the transaction.

If the checkout shows that you are not going to receive any points on the transaction, you won't receive any points at all after 14 business days (and you should be able to cancel the transaction at that stage, or you can proceed with the transaction and raise a manual points claim with Everyday Rewards and hope they will help you). Keep in mind that the $20 fixed denomination appears to be excluded from the deal, so don't use them as part of your test.

  • I wasn't told that I earned any point i got 2 500$ gift cards
