  • Was about to buy a 970 Evo Plus for an older laptop, no real benefit to getting this since it's not PCIe gen 4 but could repurpose later?.. hmm..

    • +6

Due to Samsung changing the controller on 970 Evo Plus recently, the controller difference at PCIe gen 3 is minimal (though Samsung did block the controller from operating in PCIe gen 4 mode). The flash chips, however, in the new batch is inferior. Overall, the newer batch of 970 Evo Plus is better than older batch in general use. However, better sustained write after SLC cache is depleted could be used as an excuse to get 980 Pro.

Re-purpose, honestly, by the time you are ready to do so (unless we are talking about less than 1 year), there would most likely be better ones / deals.

For 1TB PCIe gen 4, 980 Pro, WD SN850 are fine. For other lesser known brands, especially with Phison E16 based controller, you want to go for 2TB version because E16 is not as well optimised for 1TB SSDs. Otherwise, you might be surprised that in some areas the 1TB E16 based SSDs are not able to beat 970 Evo Plus 1TB (the current batch).

People are reporting they cannot checkout successfully though.

      • Would be doing some heavy video/media editing and constant in and outs etc. so most previous posts we're plugging the 970EvoPlus as the way to go.. but for the $20 difference and no wait and maybe repurpose down the track thought this might be the go.. but maybe if prices are dropping on this others might follow?

You are using the current price of 970 Evo Plus vs the discounted price of 980 Pro to compare. 970 Evo Plus 1TB, after selling Far Cry 6 game voucher off previously, was basically $130-$140 (some people even managed to get $45+ for the game voucher) - so we are talking about $50 difference if we do an OZB comparison. Also, if you compared 980 Pro 2TB or WD SN850 2TB best price, then it doesn't really look that attractive.

It is more fomo to get 980 Pro to be honest. I guess if you don't have AfterPay, this is probably the best deal on 980 Pro 1TB so far (assuming you can actually buy it). Personally, I wouldn't get 970 Evo Plus 1TB now (wait for a better deal). The current game promotion doesn't seem as good (dunno how much you can get selling the game code).

    • CANT :) i tried..

  • Just checked my invoice 6 months ago… $279 lol not even the $50 bonus stream credit makes it better.

    • Cheer up, the one you got 6 months ago is probably faster, see my comment below.

  • It wont let me checkout.. I've tried both firefox and google chrome… I've had an account with them for a while now… website error.. incorrect price?. its the same as the 500GB version

    • Got one.. it took a while to work for me

  • Thanks just ordered one checkout process was a bit finicky had to make an account & verify it before it would let me checkout with it in my cart.

    • Can confirm this, couldn't checkout initially. Created an account, went through to payment without an issue.

    Good for PS5?

    • -8

I have been waiting for one who always ask this question in a SSD deal…

    • From my understanding yes.

    • +1

yes I have the 2tb version my PS5 with a heat sink it works great.

    • It meets the requirements and it is listed with a speed of up to 7,000 MB/s, however, I got one myself and my PS5 says that it is reading at around 5,500. After searching online it seems that it is a common thing on the 1tb and 2tb 980 pro and you get the real speed if you update the firmware on a PC (then you get like 6,500). I don't have a PC to do that so I'm using it as it is and I don't feel a difference in performance. Is equal to the PS5's SSD, which I believe is 5,500.

So, it works great and can be even better if you get the firmware update. If you buy the 980 pro with heatsink or a different one, like the WD sn850, you will get better speeds out of the box.

    where's the 2tb deals……. please. :)

  • Are there any games that come with it like last time?

  • Thanks OP. Bought 1 for my new rig.

  • +1

I gave up after 20mins. I'm pretty sure I don't need one but still it's the OzB way

    • +1

Don't give up. You can do it. Be a true ozbargainer and never give up.

I finally got through and bought one! Thanks for those words!

Be careful with with the 980 Pro, Samsung has changed the components and kept the model number the same!

Samsung removed the Elpis controller from the 980 PRO and replaced it with an unknown one.

    • +1

any proof its actually changed and not just renamed?

    • it should be fine. I see no issues here….
      https://www.anandtech.com/show/16087/the-samsung-980-pro-pci…

    • Why are you so fixated on Elpis? Elpis is not something to write home about because Samsung already started putting Elpis in 970 Evo Plus for months (with PCIe gen 4 disabled on 970 Evo Plus). Honestly, I would like to see Samsung changes that controller to something better for 980 Pro. Elpis had been around for too long and it is the reason why 980 Pro has not performed as well as SN850. Elpis is the least cheated PCIe gen 4 controller, but most of us would rather Elpis operate in SLC mode for longer (PCIe gen 4 is all about cheating with SLC cache as long as possible).

Put it this way, the easiest way to "trick" customers is to replace the SSD with a "better" controller, but more cost effective flash chips. Also, Elpis is a Samsung in-house controller. Elpis is the reason why 980 Pro is cheaper than SN850.

I dare Samsung to put in a controller that's inferior than Elpis on 980 Pro. It is like saying Samsung will put in a worse controller on 980 Pro compared to 970 Evo Plus. That's just silly. The real issue with a controller swap is that we need to find out whether the NAND chips are also changed and weigh up the pros and cons. Samsung's PCIe gen 5 NVMe controller is on the horizon. I doubt Samsung is willing to put a cut down version of that on 980 Pro right away though.

      • The problem is more basic than this: If a manufacturer changes a product's components it should to change the product number.

        • For 970 Evo Plus, Samsung did change the outer packaging so you can tell which one you are getting, but you do need to read up on the Web to get the information.

WD, you can't tell until you put the SSD into your computer and check. So, they are now releasing new models, BUT, it is now better controller, inferior NAND, new model number and charge more. People just read reviews and got all hyped up (i.e. SN770) and don't seem to give a damn the true NAND sustained write is 50% of SN750 (and yet WD wants us to pay more for SN770). The SLC cache and PCI gen 4 speed combo is doing well in benchmark tests so SN770 is getting rave reviews….

SN850 has different batches, roughly the same performance. So, in that case, do you want a new model number?

How about Apple? Should Apple do the same? Apple did change 1m lightning to USB-C cable from USB 3 to USB 2. Apple USB-C chargers, a few of them have multiple batches with different voltage support. USB-C digital AV dongle, there are 2 batches with two totally different chips inside. Even iPhones, Apple uses multiple display suppliers, SSD NAND suppliers.

If you feel so strongly about that, perhaps you can start by indicating how the new batch of 970 Evo Plus should be renamed to. In most cases, it outperforms the older batch, but the new NAND's sustained write is inferior. Can Samsung follow WD's standard and charge customers more? In reality, the new batch of 970 Evo Plus appears to be cheaper.

        • The problem here is common sense. If Samsung is already putting Elpis in their PCIe gen 3 NVMe SSDs, it would be silly for Samsung to put an inferior controller in 980 Pro.

Samsung is already showing that, for their current NVMe SSD lineup, Samsung is not interested in manufacturing more older controllers which are inferior than Elpis.

It's better that we try to be up to date with latest SSD news and understand the current limitations of mainstream SSD reviews, rather than relying on model numbers. Mainstream review sites, even after learning the component swaps, often just willing to put a paragraph and link to another article, rather than re-doing the tests (because Samsung and WD don't send them the new batches and those sites are unwilling to pay out of pocket and re-review newer batches of older SSD models). So, right now, all the mainstream SN550 and 970 Evo Plus reviews are out of date. Good luck figuring out which batch of SN850 you will be getting. Also, be cynical about some of the cost effective SSD models (e.g. SN770) - know its pros and cons.

Remember: It's much easier to cheat with newer controllers. It is just silly to use older or inferior controllers and then have to put in same or better NAND.

The only possible excuse I can think of for loving Elpis so much is that you believe it is tried and tested and Samsung using it across the board means Samsung likes it (so you care more about reliability than speed). However, I know a lot of OZBers tease 980 Pro as you need to do a firmware update to address PS5 speed test issue. What exactly is so great about Elpis?

  • anyone able to buy?

  • For those who are disappointed to miss out, go take a look at reviews for the Western Digital SN770, then go take a look on Amazon.

    • +1

I did this. That drives about 25% slower. The better comparison is SN850 for speed.

      • For write speed? Sure. For read speed, it's faster in the vast majority of use cases.

    • +2

SN770, would like to wait for more tests. It's better than SN750SE, due to the better in house controller. However:

      • It has a more aggressive SLC turbo write (even more aggressive than SN850). It is all great when the drive is empty, but as the drive is filled up, we won't get the same performance. Yes, all PCIe gen 4 SSDs cheat a lot, but this is basically cheat even more.
      • It is still DRAMless and supports 4 channels, instead of 8 channels (so not to affect SN850).
      • Sustained write after SLC cache runs out isn't that great for PCIe gen 4 SSDs (it is more at PCIe gen 3 level).
      • TLC NAND's true sustained write is worse than SN750 (non-SE, WD's PCIe gen 3 flagship SSD).

So, we are once again faced with better controller and inferior NAND chips and WD asking us to pay more (than SN750 due to PCIe gen 4 support and really aggressive SLC). Honestly, SN770 needs a bit more price drop or we have local stock here + WD promotion.

I don't like the direction WD is going with SN570 and SN770.

      • +1

SN770 is new and just released. At the current pricing, it is too expensive and I would rather pay a bit more for Samsung 980 Pro or WD SN850. SN770 1TB is currently around AUD $200-$230, it needs to be around $180 to be competitive.

      • thanks for your insights - greatly appreciated :)

      • I did mention looking at Amazon. ;)

If you have any ad blockers installed, this could be causing the issue.

    Got one. Thanks OP. Yay.

Probably shave 2 seconds off windows start up time. Awesome. Lol

    • It's a storage expansion for me as well

  • Can I install this on a Acer Nitro 5 laptop as a second SSD?

    • I installed a 970 EVO PLus inside a Acer laptop… it was one of those $500 11th gen i3 FHD cheap deals from 2021

The plastic area around the drive bay is now pretty hot.. the Kingston A2000 that was in there ran WAY cooler i guess..
No idea if this is an issue or not.. oh well

  • Any 2TB’s?

  • I have to say though if you have a PS5 the 2tb is the sweet spot its not too expensive and it has alot of storage I have 81 games on my PS5 with 25 of them are PS5 games the rest are ps4

    • I'm on the fence for that reason. I think i need to bite the bullet on a 2TB, just a little outside of my budget at the moment. I currently have a 1TB external SSD full of PS4 games, and even then I find I am constantly juggling PS5 games on and off the tiny onboard SSD.

      • it is definatlly worth it the 2tb I would have been annoyed with the 1tb for sure. and being an internal SSD game can be installed directly and PS5 games can be played on it saving your internal drive for other stuff.

  • grrrr cart not working for me whatever i try :(

  • Would this work in the PS5?

  • Bugger, prices back up to $219. Was about to pull the trigger :(

  • My Samsung 980 Pro 1TB from HT on the $189 delivered deal comes in Friday yey :)
