A new one of these comes out about every 2 years. It is a great deal, but just be aware that a newer model might be just around the corner, hence the discounts.

  • +3

Redemption of the gift card is limited to 250 people so there's a good chance that's been claimed.

Good to stack with Seagate Ironwolf HDD 4TB $114.56 and 8TB $250.75.

    • You’re the NAS master, Clear!

Did you get your Terramaster running Synology DSM 7.x yet?

      • +1

Have a Synology so I just kept the Terramaster as stock. Purely just extra layers of redundancy now.

    • How's the ironwolf 10tb as a potential buy? Similar price per Tb compared to 8tb or more expensive?

I prefer to buy 10tb and above when possible

      • +1

The 10TB here goes for $318.75 so $31.87 per tb. The 8TB for $250.75 ends up being $31.34 per tb so it's not a massive difference in price.

One thing to note is that when your drives are above 8TB the risk of failures during a rebuild is more likely. So ensure you have good backup routines.

        • Thank you, above 8tb risk of failure during a rebuild is more likely?

How come that is the case? The higher the capacity higher chance of failure?

          • +1

@JL1: Comments here explain it a bit more. Always a risk with higher the capacity the drives simply because when rebuilding a RAID array there's more data to be read and reconstructed.

You'll be fine though. Just make sure you have a backup of your data.

            • @Clear: Thank you for your response!

    • What is that 250 people limitation? Could you please elaborate? Are you talking about the 60 dollars gift card seagate offer when you buy two 8t drives?

      • Yes the gift cards. From the terms:

The Promotion Giveaways are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and are subject to a
maximum quantity of 250. The total prize pool value is $37,500.

The previous model went as low as $630, so still some leeway for a better price hopefully.

    • +3

Agree. For the age of the tech would expect it to be hovering around that $600 more often

      • +1

Not to mention there is barely significant improvement over the previous model either.

      • +2

I'd be waiting for the $550 mark pretty soon

  • Recommend researching the Synology drive compatibility warning saga.

    • Has nothing to do with low end models like this. At least, not right now.

      • Yeah for now. That’s why I suggested looking it up people can make up their own mind

  • Got the ds220j finally at just over $200 on eBay with afterpay, less powerful but will service my needs fine (hopefully). The + versions are certainly tempting but can't justify the huge price differences in my use case.
Was going to get the ds120j but then for as slight increase it's good to be able to add storage later.

I got my 920 when they first came out. I'd had an old Unraid setup on a HP microserver for over 5 years full of hacks and half-baked upgrades so I was ready for something a bit more "moron friendly" (like me!). Been loving mine - just so easy to manage.

    • HP NL'er here. Just interested what was difficult once you had your HP setup?

  • I've been so good at waiting for the new models, just a little longer…

    • …until you give in today and decided to buy this? Hehe

  • Was it $839 before 15% off? Just trying to buy it but realised the price is now $999. They raised the price for the last few stocks I think.

    • thanks for the feedback, yes the price before discount had been increased to $999 for some reason when I checked this morning.

  • +2

I've been seeing similar pricing with long running discount codes on ebay for a while now. Not a terrible price but probably not a GREAT deal at this point in time. Nevermind the added cost of drives could also be better.

  • Picked up the DS1621+ from Scorptec with this Afterpay deal. Worked out to $1,190 for that, which I thought was pretty decent.
