Popular router with good reviews.
Cheaper than this and this and available now beside.
I jump the gun last week lose out of $25, much sin much regret. Well I suppose I don't much like afterpay anyway.
Paid $450 a couple weeks ago as my old ac86 died… Now I'm sad…
Me too, bought with Amazon at that price expecting to trial it and return in case it didn't work out. Glad I did so I could get the price difference refund.
How do you get the price difference refund?
I bought from Amazon too, please explain?
@KRiSX: You buy another at the lower price then initiate a return on the older higher priced item. Then when the new item arrives, you just put the new item in the return box. I asked the customer rep and they told me to do exactly this.
When did your AC86 die and why?
Couple weeks back, woke up one day and it was dead. Only 1 light would come on (lan 4 I believe) and was dimmer than it would normally be. I tried a few things but couldn't get it to come back to life, was pretty annoying as it'd been a fantastic router for the past 3 or so years. Switch to my old ac68 temporarily but it just doesn't perform as well for WiFi so bought the Ax86 and it's been pretty solid so far.
Aaaand, I could have had an extra Qantas point per dollar on eBay 😡
Uhh, the pain…
Most dishonourable failure.
I have this router.
There’s 2.4ghz issues where it will drop out. Doesn’t play well with apple home smart home gadgets (eg, garage door)
Forums say perhaps switch to Merlin firmware, but haven’t gone that road.
AX or AC ? My ac has all those issues
Try turning off airtime fairness in wireless > Professional settings. Worked for me with rt-ac88u.
This model cant do vpn policy routing right?
Switch to Merlin in super easy, may as well try
I'd love to get that router unfortunately it doesn't fit my budget.
Can anyone recommend good Wi-Fi 6 router under $300 please?
Huawei have some crackers for sub 100
I've gone the budget option going with Huawei 6+
While it is a decent modem especially for the price under 80, signal is not strong enough for my 2nd and a half floor.
I wonder if this one will cut.
I would actually recommend Huawei if you don't have multiple floors or more than 3 walls to penatrate.
It can handle my 250mb nbn plan just fine.
There is the Asus TUF AX5400 for $289. Can't comment on how good it is personally (yet) but reviews look ok.

This is a very solid option. Could try officeworks price beat too. If looking to pay less consider a WiFi 5 unit as may not see much difference on WiFi 6 anyway https://www.computeralliance.com.au/asus-rt-ax3000-dual-band…
Best wifi router under $200?
Edit: Oops just realized a similar questions been asked
Can we pay everything with ebay gift card?
This price works for me, thanks. Snapped up one. Time to replace my aging Netgear, which does struggle a bit sometimes.
What's the advantage of the Merlin firmware over stock? Did a quick Google search, and came up with https://dongknows.com/asus-routers-and-merlin-firmware/, which says:
AiMesh support (starting with version 384).
Anything more? The user scripts feature sounds very interesting.
Wireguard support
I don't think Aimesh is a selling point. It's just replicating a feature already in the original firmware.
Hmm is there a router that supports FTTB with wi-fi 6? Starting to wonder if there's any… I know, rather niche scenario but I can't seem to find it.
You would need a modem/router that comes with a DSL port to connect to FTTB.
I currently have FTTB and have one of these hooked up to a Netgear X4S R7800 in modem only mode which allows the ASUS router to handle all router functions
I notice there is no DSL port to connect to in all of the ASUS router, even on the versions that say modem
Im on FTTN, Im assuming FTTP doesnt need it, so its not standard
Yeah on FTTN you need a modem or modem/router to connect to the DSL port then you can connect one of these routers into the modem’s LAN port to the router’s WAN port.
FTTP already has an nbn NTD device in the home that you just connect to via an Ethernet cable to the router’s WAN port.
Finally pulled the pin and got this. Thanks OP.
why would you buy this if telstra gives you free wifi modem? are you really oz-bargainer?
If the free modem covers your living space and doesn't randomly cut out or slow down when there's multiple devices using it, sure stick with the free one.
If you need one It's kind of a buy it once device, there should be no need to replace it for years.
As if anyone in their right mind would use Telstra for internet… It's the ISP for bundlers and people who don't know better.
If you live in an apartment block or (like me) in a townhouse complex with 10-20 other wifi networks broadcast near you, the free modem won't cut it. It will get you by at speeds under 100mbps, but try doing any meaningful local filesharing or cctv over wifi and you will suffer…
Anyone using 2 of these in the mesh setup ?
This is out of stock now :(
I snooze, I lose.
Why you make me regret more ðŸ˜
