Actionable steps to minimize widespread of fuel price misinformation across VIC [PetrolSpy]

Does anyone notice the rampant false pricing submitted on PetrolSpy for 20+ fuel stations across VIC?

I saw fuel prices submitted as low as $1.69/L and $0.69/L today!

I get that war and covid contributed to this, and the fuel hike is inevitable. I'm also of the opinion that fuel prices could keep going up (seeing what is happening in the US), but surely something could be done to make PetrolSpy as enjoyable/informative as it once was?

Any suggestions or friendly advices, on how do we navigate through this difuelcult time?

THOUGHT: If a fuel station is showing a highly discounted fuel price, there should be a button whereby people could "flag" as being suspicious. I find the OzBargain "plus" and "neg" buttons serve as a pretty good indicator for reliability.

    Use Motormouth instead

    • Thank you kanmen for the recommendation, I wonder how did that went under my radar over the years.

No worries, I've found it to be fairly reliable for petrol prices in Melbourne. It requires uploaders to upload either a photo of the price signage, or of a receipt to verify.

I saw that. I don't know what these people are actually trying to achieve. Maybe they are just getting too bored with Covid and now war in the Ukraine.

  • Contact PetrolSpy and get them to implement some verification. Or drive around yourself and make sure all the prices are right.

Drive round in an Electric Car to save money on Petrol. lol

    • That was what I did, I was driving around a few areas and found out that a lot of the submitted prices are way off.
Also saw one station as having $69 fuel @_@

    • @freefall101, I've emailed PetrolSpy and addressed the issue, hope I get some feedback from them :)

Vic needs a system similar to NSW where fuel station have to put in their fuel prices to the government website and consumers use the Fuel Watch app to check the prices.

I found that "crowd sourced information apps" like petrol spy were full of trolls looking to laugh at people. Post a stupid price and then watch all the sheep turning up in cars en-masse to get this cheap fuel that doesn't exist. Sort of the equivalent of SWATing someone, or making up an open invitation Fartbook party at a neighbors house.

I haven't used any other apps in ages for fuel, but it sounds like they need a check system like Waze. If the price is at the posted cost, thumbs up. If not, downvote it and it gets removed and user cops a penalty for posting fake information.

  • Yeah i wonder what their motivation is. Months ago, someone keeps posting a high price for a particular 7-11.
