DIY Vs Professionally Installed Gutter Guards

I have a concrete tiled roof house with large trees in the neighboring property and have recently removed the old and worn Whites Gutter Guard Mesh, which I had originally installed myself. I'm looking to install new gutter guards and I'm deciding between either (a) installing Stratco 5 x 2m Steel Gutter Guards by myself or (b) having Steel Gutter Mesh installed by a professional.

I don't think I'll be able to successfully install the steel gutter mesh by myself properly in the same way the professionals can. Plus, the property has 3 roof valleys.

I'm also hoping that the new gutter guards will also better bird and vermin proof the house as I've had issues with birds laying eggs above the old gutter guards and roof rats in the past. However, I am planning to lease out my property in the next couple of years.

I'm wanting to hear what others have done when it came to installing gutter guards and from the 2 options above, which option is better in your opinion based on the circumstances above.

Thanks everyone.

    You answered your own question.

  • from the 2 options above

Plenty of people suggest not installing gutter guards and just maintaining your gutters and roof regularly.

You maybe better to just pay someone to clean the gutters every year. Its an investment expense so you can claim it

This. Gutter guards aren't maintenance free anyway. You'll still need to clear off any debris/faeces that accumulate around the gutter guard.

      • can't claim investment expenses on your own house

      • At work they clean gutters every year professionally. So many trees that it’s near worthless getting it done. Ideally would be monthly or more.

Interested in this discussion, my roof is subject to a massive amount of leaf fall from gum trees, so it's very hard to stay on top of cleaning out the gutters. If there was an effective gutter mesh that shed the leaves I'd be interested in that too

I've yet to come across maintenance-free gutters.

It's debatable whether the upfront cost of gutter guards (or any other product) reduces the ongoing maintenance. If you have solar panels or anything else on your roof, there's a good chance it'll need maintenance too. Best I can tell, the marginal cost of clean gutters without guards isn't much more than clean gutters with guards. Cleaning bird poop from solar panels is pretty expensive to begin with.

  • I installed myself with something in between the 2 systems (from Stratco but they don't seem to sell anymore). It was a fine mesh, but more rigid panels than the Blue Mountains stuff. And it was a PAIN. You have to slide the roof tiles back, which is hard enough on its own when you're on a ladder. Then get the guard in place, and screw down into the gutter lip, which I found was not especially easy to do. Then wiggle the tile back into place without causing deformation to the gutter guard. I definitely wouldn't do it myself again
