Damn, looking for a small freezer too, and this would be great, but nothing available for delivery or C&C around Perth.

  • Kogan has cheaper freezers around the same size - no idea if they're better but might be worth a look…

    • Yeah I've also seen the Kogan freezers and they seem cheaper by a decent amount but its the only brand at that price which seems slightly sketch.

Normally I'd agree with you, but in this case I have this exact freezer, and I got it from Kogan.

Functions just fine, although it uses a PTC for the starter relay, and they blow out after a few years. Cheap to replace, but annoying if you have to wait for it to arrive in the mail. Best to buy one or two in advance (it uses the 15ohm type)

        • How do you figure out if this part is the issue? I have a cheap freezer, looks like the kogan one. it clicks followed by a faint buzz and clicks again to stop buzzing. The compressor never starts, I wonder if this would sort me out too?

@Sharp: Sounds like it. Its a part that's made to fail, so it's not surprising when they do.

Your freezer may have a different resistance value, so if you're feeling confident pull the part out and take a look. Its just a little black box that slides onto the pins of the compressor, and the wires plug into it. It should be labelled something like 'MZ93-15R'. That last part of it is the resistance value, in this case 15ohms.

Make sure you take photos first so that you can put the right color wires back in the right places. I would also highly recommend drawing a diagram.

        • Why would I buy anything that might blow out after a few years

          • @djmm: because all the cheap models are like that. Probably some of the not so cheap ones too

            • @outlander: Is it only a problem with freezers? I don't seem to have this issue with regular fridges.

              • +1

@djmm: Its the cheap stuff from the past 7 years or so. Single purpose stuff, so fridges or freezes but less likely on the combined fridge/freezer models

From what I've seen it's mostly its the cheap brands, so Esatto, Kogan, Chiq. They all just rebrand whatever cheap stuff they can find.
The bigger brands like samsung or westinghouse probably care about their reputation more and so spend the extra $5 on the older more reliable capacitor based starters.

  • Manual defrost I assume, as there's no mention of auto. Can't imagine that being fun.
