Is It Reasonable to Leave an Electric Scooter in a Large Gym? Management Asking Me to Leave It outside

Thankyou for your feedback, locking the thread. Consensus is I'm being unreasonable.
I was in a bad mood yesterday due to electricity and water being cut off from my house for 1 day each
Had to shower and brush teeth at the gym 2 days ago I appreciate them not minding that
Will take my P's test which I haven't gotten around to
Will ride my cheap bike or electric bike instead as it's legal and can be locked up easier outside

Not justifying my post or actions I think I rely on Ozbargain to be a sounding board and rationalise my actions, or to complain about stuff. It's good to have the voice of reason and I see consensus is people don't agree with me so I have sent an email to Plus Fitness apologising for my bad mood and emails. Thankyou for your feedback even if you were brutally honest.

For context it's a Ninebot Segway E45

Hi Levity,

Hope you are well 😊
I have just noticed on the camera that you left your scooter inside the gym yesterday afternoon.
Could you please leave this outside next time?

I tucked it neatly behind the management desk and they were not there, it's not in the way. I do not feel comfortable leaving it in the carpark as a bolt cutter could steal it and the scooter has no loop to attach. I have asked if there are cameras covering the carpark but have said I will hold the gym liable if its stolen.

Did you get it back from your friend? That's great news.

Why don't you walk to the gym, instead of riding an electric scooter? Free cardio.

    • -1

Haha, my family suggested that is probably what I'll have to do if it's not allowed

      • +18

Hope you're well aware they're illegal to ride in public in Sydney (your set location).

You're being unreasonable. Gym management can decide whatever they like for their own premises. Maybe they don't want to the very small risk that the battery would burst into flames and cause damage to gym which isn't covered by insurance.

          • +5

            @[Deactivated]: Hey mate,

I think you’re being unreasonable. These are classified an motor vehicles, and are illegal in NSW as they can’t be registered, insured etc. FF would be opening themselves to a liability risk by allowing it to stay there.

I would compare it to someone asking if they could park their electric motorbike inside the building, or even an electric bicycle.

Now, let’s say they did let you, they then need to let everyone. Nek minnit, there’s 10 of these bastards behind the desk.

Having worked in a gym, give an inch, 40 miles will be taken.

  • +43

    Leave it outside.

    You are being unreasonable

They are not liable and you stamping your feet like a petulant child, doesn't change that.

    Grow up.

      • +5

Lol. It won’t be inside whether there is a camera outside, or not.

Hot tip: if it gets stolen, they will care as much about that, as they do your demands for a camera outside.

                  • @MeesusEff: How do we know Levity is male?

                    • +1

@Quantumcat: Interesting point, as I also have Levity as a male in my head. Your comment got me thinking about that, hence my reply.

I think we take any information we obtain in our interactions with someone and build up a persona of that person (well, I do at least!). With the information I have from Levity, it is a "male" persona. This is built from things such as what things they post and comment on, what language they use in those posts/comments, their name, avatar, etc. This persona could be wrong, but remember this is my persona for them. Another's persona for Levity could have them as a "female", or anything LGBTIQ+ and beyond.

Thanks for making me think about this - it was interesting to think about how I personify people I interact with online; especially given that you all only exist in my head!

                      • @Chandler: Out of curiosity what do you have me as in your head?

I assume you are male mostly because of the character Chandler in Friends 😛

Contemplated putting that in there! I have you as a female, but can't put my finger on what that's based on (hence my not putting it in there); although I know you're name & avatar contributed to that decision, but not solely.

I assume you are male mostly because of the character Chandler in Friends 😛

You're right, but not because I'm Chandler from Friends :P

I don't think it would cost them that much for a lawyer, assuming they chose the civil rather than criminal path for their response.

              • @[Deactivated]: You sound like a customer from hell. They'd be happy to get rid of you and wouldn't give a damn about your review. They'd also be happy to sue your ass off for teaching how to commit fraud.

      • Entitled.

    • +4

      Wow, pathetic response

    • +1

While i totally understand where you're coming from, its pretty reasonable the gym wants you to leave what is essentially a motor vehicle outside. I mean at what point do you stop really??

I'm legit worried someone will break into my car (where they could steal things worth as much as the scooter) but i can't park that nearer to the lobby of my gym. What about a Tesla - that's electric? What about a Vespa - that's only a small scooter?

      • They all have keys, this is just a button but I see your point

  • I think it's pretty reasonable to leave it inside, away from everyone, as long as the wheels are not dirtying the carpet.
It's akin to leaving your skateboard on the side.

Now something larger like a bike, I can see how that can be unreasonable.

    • -6

Yeah I feel the issues is I'm leaving it behind the management desk and not the scooter itself as much
No carpet it's some vinyl floor

      • Why can't you put it aside somewhere away from the desk, and away from other people. Is there no space?

        • +12

If they let you do it, they have to let everyone else. WHat happens when 6 people all want to store thier scooters/bikes there while they work out?

It's unlikely the manager was scouring hours of footage every day just to see someone doing something wrong. It's more likley someone complained about it (so it's probably more in the way than OP thinks) and the manager reviewed the footage to find who it was.

OP, it's an illegal mode of transport in NSW, you've been asked to leave it outside. Now you threaten assisting illegal activity to make them go bankrupt.

Either leave it outside, or find a gym that lets you take it inside (which I doubt will happen). Get over yourself.

          • @dizzle:

WHat happens when 6 people all want to store thier scooters/bikes there while they work out?

            This hasn't happened though.

        • There is a PT rooms upstairs nobody ever goes in too

      • +2

Assuming it folds up, a solution is to get a very large canvas bag or similar and put it in the bag when you arrive and before you go in. Then it will just look like a giant sports bag.

    • Yeah it's not automatically unreasonable. Just needed to be managed properly, which by the sounds of it was not done.

  • +5

the gym isn't responsible for the car park

why do you think they should be responsible for looking after your possessions? you want a free babysitter and if it gets stolen you're going to try to blame them.. nice deal

    • It's a 5 spot carpark for Gym customers owned by the gym, same building next to the door on the same level which they are not allowing me to leave the scooter. I am looking after my possessions by keeping it in my eyeline.

      • None of that is relevant, they are not responsible for your personal belongings.
For all we know their insurance may dictate what they can and cannot hold for staff, customers etc

I guess with your childish attitude that you are displaying here that you are not old enough to have a driving license
And regardless of how considerate to all other road users you are all it takes is one cop on a bad day to hit you with a batch of fines totalling 2.5 to 3k

    • +5

just like almost all car parks in the world, I'll make a hypothesis that they don't accept liability for what happens in it

anyway, consensus is in, you're being entitled and management is more than right to tell you that your bike is not their responsibility and to keep it outside.

      • Yes i get your point now.
        It's a scooter

  • +23

You are being unreasonable and a little entitled. It is not the gym's responsibility to look after your expensive goods! It is even more unreasonable that you leave your scooter behind the management desk - again not what it is designed for.

    • -6

I'm surprised they took the time to look up my face from camera footage and sent me an email.
It is not being used, it's in a corner of a 24hr gym and by putting it there it's not the way. I agree with not being the gym's responsibility to look after it, thats why I'm keeping it in eyeline

  • any other gyms around?

    • -1

Fitness First I get a discount with work but not 24hr
There are other Plus Fitness Branches around that are the same distance or a bit more and better equiped
      Anytime is very close too

      • +1

In your search for a new gym, ask for permission to park the scooter inside.

        • This is a good idea, better to ask before when enquiring

  • +17

You're being unreasonable, entitled and childish. If this is still an issue….

    • +3

constant rejection seems to be a recurring theme in his life lmfaoo

  • Buy a gigantic bag and put it in that. Drag it around the gym.

    • +1

Use it as a weight for a free workout.

  • +14

HAHA I used to get people try and bring their bikes and scooters into my bar all the time, always the same answer, it stays outside. Don't like it, go somewhere else. Always the same sentences from them, I didn't bring a lock or It'll get stolen, and my answer is always the same, that's a you problem.

  • +11

While you think you're not doing anything wrong by leaving it inside, what if someone else or an employee knocks it over or trips on it and hurts themself?

If it's damaged by another, and based on your responses, sounds like you'd be blaming management for not looking after it. Or if someone else hurts themself and sues the gym? Seems an unnecessary liabilty issue to them and have politely asked you to cease that activity.

If the gym doesn't suit your requirements, you should leave.

As to threatening a bad review and tying to ruin their business simply because they're not doing what you specifically want…?? Wow.

A camera won't make any difference to the type of person that would carry bolt cutters to steal a scooter.

  • +13

You are being perfectly reasonable, same gym won’t allow me to take my Hyundai Kona in either and won’t take ANY responsibility for damage in the car park. Not as though anyone could trip over MY wheels.

  • +10

Isn't it lovely when the OP argues with every person who doesn't share their viewpoint ???

    • +1

The OP forgot to add "reply only if you agree with me".

    • +2

Don't know why they even bother posting 😂

  • +7

Go to the gym to work out. Takes an electric scooter to the gym to avoid any physical activity to/from said gym. Makes sense.

Use the walk to the gym as a warm up and the walk home as a cool down. Plus, you have the added benefit of not creating a OH&S hazard for the gym to manage.

  • +5

Which gym you say? I need a new scooter.

      • +2

But where will he leave the scooter? the manager's not going to let it into the living room

  • +4

am I being unreasonable or are they?

    You are.

have said I will hold the gym liable if its stolen

    Confirmed. You are.

  • "but have said I will hold the gym liable if its stolen"

You may. Have you also written to Putin yet, I'm sure he's quaking in his boots not knowing what way you will jump there?

    "It's IPx4 waterproof "

So don't ride it in the rain. Anywhere close enough to (unlawfully in NSW) scooter is close enough to walk.

  • Just ask the cop shop near the gym if you can keep it in their foyer?

  • +2

Spend less time in the gym, more time on how to be a sensible human being.

  • +1

You left it behind the management desk without asking for permission first? Rude!

If you don't work for the business, you shouldn't be going behind their management desk!

Frankly, I would've asked for permission to leave a scooter anywhere inside their premises to begin with. If they had bike parking on premises then that's the only situation where I'd assume I could leave a scooter without asking first.

The hell is wrong with people these days…

Maybe email back and say you're concerned about it being stolen outside, is there any way you could leave it inside but at a different location where it won't get in anyone's way?

Also hopefully you had it in a collapsed form and carried it in rather than wheeling it across the gym etc
