Anyone know how fast these are? Have an old Kobo Aura h2o and its very slow

    • +1

My Kobo Libra 2 is a bit slower than my 2012 year old Kindle Keyboard.
I suspect the kobo software is a little sluggish since the hardware specs of the device are pretty good.

      • +1

My libra is speedy compared to the Clara. Are you sure it does not need a reset?

        • It was brand new. Kobos are a bit slower than kindles generally, especially if you're using side-loaded ebooks.
For me it's worth the trade off though, the Libra 2 is amazing, and reading at 1% in bed doesn't disturb my sleep.

my 2012 year old Kindle Keyboard

Was that the one Jesus used?

    • The Kobo Clara HD was originally released in 2018, so it may not be that much older than your H2O. Have you updated the OS to the latest versions that it's able to? (not sure what Kobo's OS updates are for older models etc. and whether they continue to support them after 'X' amount of years)

When you say slow, do you mean when, for example, you select a menu option, it takes a while for it to action/open? And/or when you tap to turn a page, it takes a while before it goes to the next page?

My Missus has one and has no complaints with it's speed. Unfortunately it's a subjective matter, as what she may perceive as fine, you may find slow.

Either way, $129 is pretty good value. I think I paid about $119 for the Missus' one on a Black Friday sale.

Kobo's updates and support for old models are damn good. Kobo Touch released in 2011 and is still receiving updates to the current firmware.

        • My Touch died within 3 years. Hardy ever used and then it stopped keeping charge completely. Something was wrong with the button as well. Worst electronic device I’ve ever owned (and I’ve had quite a few dodgy mobile phones pre-iPhone). My daughter has the Clara HD though and is very happy with it.

          • @bozbargain: My comment was in response to

not sure what Kobo's OS updates are for older models etc. and whether they continue to support them after 'X' amount of years

            • @NobalaKoba: I know but based on your positive experience with Kobo I wanted to respond to that with a negative one, so that prospective buyers know it’s not all roses and sunshine when it comes to Kobo. It’s great if the software support is so long but it’s a shame if the hardware lets you down. Plus I wanted to have a bit of a vent…

              • @bozbargain: That's understandable.

I have the Clara HD and previously a Kobo Aura H2O (now used by my partner) and it's been all roses and sunshine for both of us, but I understand that isn't the case for everyone.

    • Fast enough not to be annoying for me.

    • Mine will turn pages as fast as you like once the books loaded. Can take about 20 seconds to boot from cold, about 5-10 to load a book from the index.

Honestly it's a nothingburger. Backlight is fantastic, battery life is amazing, and I can use it with calibre. I can throw it in a bag, forget about it for months, and it'll still last a weekend trip and a whole book or two.

    $129 on Amazon AU delivered.

    • +1

Never thought to check Amazon, didn't think they'd sell a Kindle competitor.

    • +2

No longer available that I could see at that price.

    • can't find it on amazon

    Is 6" big enough?

    • +21

Plenty if you know how to use it

    • +2

It's the standard size for these. There are some bigger ones, but i feel those are for more specific thinks like reading pdf or comics. I think the new Kindle has 7'' but i feel that's is to justify the purchase since there isn't much space to innovate with these devices every time a new one is released

      • +1

For comics you really want a 10” or 11”. (Tablet size)
I’ve tried it on the 7” oasis and it’s a bit of a strain (although it looks brilliant)
        … at least reading manga.

6 or 7” is really perfect for novel reading, anything bigger or heavier and it’ll wear your hand out holding it during an all night binge read

        • 6" is also the right size to slip into an inside pocket of a jacket (for instance).

      • Kobo Elipsa 10.3 with pen is the holy grail for comics, pdfs and note taking. But at $599, bit borderline still for "too expensive" taboo. Someday if that comes below $300 then there ends the search.

If username checks out should be plenty…

    • It's more about how you use it.

    • It's about the size of a small format paperback page, it's plenty. You can customise font style, size and line spacing easily to suit your eyes/preference so size is almost irrelevant. Unless you read graphic novels, it's great. Vanishes in a laptop bag.

  • +1

Is it just me or is the selection on Overdrive quite limited? Supposedly this is the killer feature for the kobo but I couldn't find any titles i wanted in local libraries using their search feature

    • +2

      Lib gen m8

      • Thanks m8. Do I need a program like Calibre to load it onto the kobo?

        • +1

You can drag and drop the .epub (or other) files directly into the Kobo, as it is read as flash storage on a PC.

    • +7

Sign up to US libraries, like LA and you’ll get more than 400k books available. Australian libraries are just shit compared to it.

      • Do I need a US address or anything to prove?

        • +3

Just use a vpn and a fake address from google maps. Be sure to write the ecard number down including pin and enter those into Libby or overdrive.

          • @Psygnosis: Thanks tried this. But seems will only last a short time as they send something to the address you list to get you to verify address.

            • @constipated: I’ve been using the LA library for more than six months using this method and it’s still going strong.

You have to verify in person I think if you want to get a physical card

            • +1

              @constipated: just use zlibrary

      • Nice one! Any good library suggestions?

        • I’m sure there are plenty more, but I also signed up to King County Library (266k books), Chicago Public (69k), Broward County (86k), Queens Public Library (103k), Santa Clara County (98k), Free Library of Philadelphia (68k), Kentucky Libraries Unbound (118k), Brooklyn Public Library (257k), and more.

      • thanks, just signed up then.

couple things for anyone else, note the mobile number you sign up with as the last 4 digits are your PIN.
My VPN didn't work to start with, had to try a different LA one, then it worked fine.

  • someone said amazon also $129

  • I love mine. If you get one I recommend you also get a cover. The cover will turn it on and off when you open it (like a book). For some reason this just makes it a better experience, as well as protecting the screen.

    • +1

Just bought this Kobo, can you recommend any covers? Happy to get a good one

      • +2

I got cheap covers for two of mine from Aliexpress, no complaints about the quality, and they've been used regularly for a few years now.
My Kobo gets daily use, so would quickly notice if the cover quality was bad.

      • I bought a matching Kobo-branded cover for my Nia last year at JB - half price ($17) in the same purchase. I notice there are none on special right now, but they are a good quality case.

Another advantage of the cover auto-sleeping the reader is that it avoids me using the really bad placement of the On/OFF switch. My old Kobo had a convenient button on the top. The Nio I bought is at the bottom and indented enough that I need to use a fingernail to press it in enough to register. A real pain and I have no clue who thought it was a great idea. Hope this helps.

  • What's the pros of this over Kindle.

Would have thought Amazon store had more variety?

    • +6

Competition. And for those that don’t want to support Amazon and Jeff Bezos’ penis shaped rocket ship. It has Overdrive built in so you can borrow books from the library straight from the device, but kindle you have to use the Libby app using US libraries, so not too hard. It also I believe supports epub whereas the Kindle you have to use calibre to convert it to a kindle format.

    • +7

      For the device itself:

      • Overdrive support for borrowing from libraries
      • Better build quality
      • Support for making software modifications (huge contrast to Kindle, with Kobo you drag and drop a file into a folder and it'll apply those changes)
      • No instrusive ads you need to pay to remove
      • Supports the standard formats (such as epub and cbz) instead of pushing a proprietary format
      • Simple process for upgrading the internal storage, by replacing it with a larger micro sd card
      • Most models (such as this one) have an adjustable warm light, which makes reading at night have less of an impact on sleep

      As for the Kobo store:

      • Kobo library gives a bigger cut to the sellers, and have price beat guarantees (difference +10% as store credit, includes matching Amazon store)
      • Don't charge sellers for each sale based on file sizes, so images aren't horribly compressed (buy the same book from the Kindle store, then from the Kobo store, compare quality and you'll see a huge contrast)
      • Kobo store DRM is simpler and easier to remove
    • +1

Kobo lets you borrow books. Kindle is only to pay for the penis rockets

  • Waiting for colour e readers to become more available, pocketbook inkpad colour over $300 still

  • +1

If only this had usb c…

  • I will advise to save up and get the libra 2. It's worth it

  • +1

thanks op! picked one up, changed the sdcard to a 128gb with koreader and filled it up with manga. very usable device.
