Hi guys, I am interested in applying for the following visa for a member of my wife's family:

It is a sponsored family visa. I was wondering if I can apply on their behalf in Australia or do they have to do it themselves?

They have to do it themselves because THEY are applying for the visa.
So let them create an IMMI account and share the password with you. You can then login and fill up the application for them no problem.

Hmm, it's what the immigration lawyer told us and hence we did. Maybe immigration are not that fussy which account it's done under then.
Confirm this, all you have to do is getting both to sign form 956A and immigration couldn't care less.

If you have an existing Immi Account, you can simply login and use the same account to lodge an application on behalf of your wifes family. In fact, the Australia Govt. encourages you to use the same account for applying for you and your family.
I have used my account many time for applying for my parents, my wife's parents and other family members with no issues.
