  • Code didn't want to work on a green one. Worked fine for black though.

    Thanks OP.

    • Updated, I only tried on the red and black ones.

  • Love the pen, been using it. Thanks op, bought yellow this time.

  • I want to start using fountain pens but I am left handed. Any recommendations?

    • don't… or find an ink that dries quickly, but there are probably no inks that dry fast enough to make it worth doing, even with some ballpoints you will be constantly smudging, it's a lot worse with fountain pens.

    • When I worked at Montblanc, there were plenty of left-handed users of fountain pens!
Depending on how you write, I would recommend a Fine Nib, or even an Extra Fine, they should lay down a fine enough line that the ink will dry fairly fast too.
And the paper will also determine the smudging too.. but it is all trial and error!

Try out a Lamy Safari, will always recommend them as a starting FP!

    • I have seen creative ways that left handed people uses for fountain pens.

Though I feel like that is more a solution looking for a problem, then something comfy.

Fountain pens are, primitive, picky with paper and requires far more care than a ballpointer or a rollerball pen. That's where some of its charm is in, but just be aware of those.

  • Blue OOS

Just FYI - all colours still get supplied with a blue ink cartridge.

Not a big fan of the nib on the Safari… feels scratchy on my notepad.

I don’t think you can change the nib on those.

If you want a real good fountain pen get the Lamy 2000… well worth the extra expense. That is smooth, but be careful when riding elevators with a full pen… theres leakage if your building is greater than 10 floors… learned my lesson on that one.

    • Most of the lamy nibs are interchangeable besides the Lamy 2000: they just slide off the feed. You can buy individual nib units, including gold ones or calligraphy-style nibs.

    • You can change the nibs on the Lamy safari line up. It can be bit tricky.

There is a chance that the nib is misaligned (tip catches onto the paper, strokes to certain angle feels more scratchier, those are the typical signs), but Lamy Safari I felt were designed to not be as smooth anyways. I did not think Safaris get misaligned easily either.

As with the elevator and pen leaking, having the pen face up helps a lot. Fountain pens "burp" ink as they are basically leaking in a controlled way when you write, so anything that overwhelms that control (i.e. huge temperature change is another one), it burps ink out.

  • I bought these from Aliexpress and they look identical.

    • Damnit man. Now I bought one.

Guess I can compare when it arrives

    • Lamy Safari clones are fairly rampant, whether they are as "good" probably is down to draw of the luck.

When I was more invested in this hobby, I did get bunch of Chinese pens as well. "Well known models" tend to be fairly decent for their price (such as Wing Sung 601), less known models and cheap models tend to be draw of the luck in terms of what you get.

Even the well known Chinese models tend to be draw of the luck when it comes to how well they write out of box (be fair this is more the norm with fountain pens). Most Chinese pens I had needed bit of tinkering. Some didn't, but again, draw of the luck.

I personally would be more inclined to believe that Lamy Safari would be sturdier than the clones, but even that would be more of draw of the luck. Some Chinese clones are really decent.
