Best Laptop under $1000 (Light Gaming)

Looking to upgrade my 5yo Lenovo ThinkPad E470 (Core i7, GeForce 940MX).
Payed $959 for it back in 2017 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/282085
i7 version of this: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-E470-Core-i5-G…

Want something new. I do very light gaming and run a browser with 40+ tabs, above config handles these tasks so anything better will work.
Forced to upgrade due to family member claiming this E470.
Cheers for the help.

I'm in the same boat. Haven't seen any Lenovo deals from @tightarse in a while. Might be a good time for another one!

    • Yeah Lenovo is my first choice for quality. Have owned most brands over the years and I've found Lenovo is next level.

Dell G15 5515, I just picked one up for $1087 last month
    https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-laptops/g15-ryzen-editi…

I bought an additional stick of 8GB for ~$50 from Amazon to get it into dual channel and repurposed my old Samsung 980 Pro 1TB (this doesn't run it at full speed but still an improvement).

With a $30 adapter/heatsink you can use the second M.2 SSD slot for even more storage.

It plays everything at medium (on an external monitor 1440p 165hz), DLSS makes it look nice but RT kills the performance and I avoid it.

  • That Dell G15 5515 is a serious machine with the RTX 3050. Shame it doesn't come with 16GB in lower price point. I can see the extra ram is only $50 but I'm dubious about opening it up voiding warranty. Adding the ram through them is out of budget.

While I'd love to get a dedicated card like the RTX at sub 1k. Seems highly unlikely unless I buy this Dell.

Honestly for me the bundled Ryzen graphics in dual channel should be more than enough for my very old school games. Also gives me more options. Although I'm not ruling out the Dell just yet.
