Yep. Especially state Victoria, where:
* illegal to fly drone near human and population
* illegal to fly drone in the national park (on contrary, these are the area that you would want to fly). Note, Most of beautiful places in Victoria are national Park.
Technically you can fly in national parks, provided there aren't any restricted airspaces. They (the parks) say no drones allowed but that just restricts you from taking off from inside the park.
If there are no restricted airspaces you can fly wherever you want. The second the drone takes off it's under the purview of Airservices Australia. The park has no control over that drone. They can't do anything apart from kick you out if you're being a nuisance haha.
I mean, sure, it's illegal… but what do you think is gonna happen? There's not enough parks officers to kick you out for it in the vast majority of locations. i.e., if you happened to head down along the Snowy River Road in the Snowy River NP and took a turn or two off the main track, you would be lucky to see one other person in an entire day.
Plus you always have the defence of 'what, I didn't know! There was no sign???'
I'm not advocating people disobeying all laws all the time, but this is a pretty low impact one in the grand scheme of things. There are probably minor environmental impacts from flying drones in protected areas (i.e. maybe you chop up some bugs or scare some birds) but as long as it's not a whole fleet of drones, is that really a problem?
@jrowls: I do agree with it not affecting much but idk if pleading ignorance will get you out of a fine. Generally when flying you should know where restricted areas are with the map you can easily have your phone

I'll wait for the DJI Mini AG2 in that case …. (The AG = Anti Gravity version which should be silent and 2 because the first generation will probably be expensive and have a few limitations that second generation will resolve).

Because this drone weighs under 250g, at least in QLD you can fly it in a lot of places - you basically need it to be in line of sight and 30 metres away from other people.
I had assumed the app would give a warning if you fly one of these in a no-go zone. Seems that's not the case?
It gives a warning of controlled airspace and boundaries around airports and helipads.
Also gives you a warning if you try and fly it near a correctional centre for some reason.

Not worth it. From gen 1 to se it's not an upgrade. If you want up your gears then look for mini 2 or just wait for mini 3 which is around the corner, but would cost much more than mini 2.

What's the main difference between mini se and mini 2?
Camera / distance (4km vs 10km, in real life 2 vs 6-8) / signal stability (mini 2 has stronger and more stable signal)
I know the range helps with quality of signal, but aren't these distances irrelevant if flying recreationally under CASA rules when you need to maintain direct line of sight?

Search ‘drone’ on your App Store and you’ll see apps to help you with this stuff. Some good free ones. But basically you can’t fly this anywhere in the ‘burbs’. The smaller/lighter drones had less regulations when I had one. But it’s been a while so I imagine they have restricted them too.

In general if its not near an airport or helicopter landing zone you can fly (not near other people) and you should see the drone (it means about 100-300m away from you)
Important to point out that it's not just the 5km zone (which covers a lot of Sydney), but pretty much any attractive area worth filming ban them too - most parks (inc national parks), beaches, the entire Sydney Harbour. I'm curious to know in Australia what areas those of you who have drones use them in? I would love an excuse to buy one of these!

I can't find anything stopping me flying in Brisbane as long as I comply with the 30m away from people rule and the rules around airports and helipads.
If you want true clarification about your area you'd need to contact Casa. I live near an uncontrolled airport and rescue chopper base and the apps say 5km exclusion zone. Casa told me I'm allowed to operate the drone below 400 feet, away from the flight path when there's no aircraft operating in the area. The regulations are clear as mud.
There are apps that will look at the GPS and tell you what you can and can't do

@Mistredo: Influencers dont get preferencial treatment when it comes to drones. You can get special permits but you have to have a justifiable excuse to fly this in places you are not suppose to.

The app gets downloaded directly from DJI but it's also worth considering another app like Litchi which has some capabilities not in the fly app. Waypoint missions being a key feature.

Sign up for the DJI care warranty if you buy one. They're really easy to kill if you clip something and they drop to the ground.

In NSW Electric scooters are illegal on the roads, not sure about other states, and there's been many reported occurrences of people being fined. So yeah you can pretty much ride it in your house lol

You can use liitchi with the dji app. Abit janky but it'll give you fpv flight.
You can get second hand mavic with 2nd hand goggles for under a grand. Best fpv set up imo for scenic flying
I bought a tiny little Zerotech Dobby drone from Australian Geographic a few years back and while I've had some nice shots with it, it was so horrendously unreliable in establishing a wifi connection and the battery life so bad (7 minutes - which is even less when you factor in time it takes to connect it, set it up each flight) that I'd probably be a pig in mud with this.
But the restrictions on where you can fly them in Australia is ridiculous - populated areas, sure, but the fact you can't fly them in national parks where there's often noone around is a killer, as I can't think of where else you could use them other than a private property with plenty of acreage. And there's only so many farmstays you can do - and want footage of.
Decent price, but I'm still waiting for the Mini 3 (supposed to be April).
I gave up HODL for the Mini 3 when I managed to snag an Air 2S for $1550 on AfterPay Day.
Got it out of the box and found a pamplet from CASA which states that drones over 250g need to be registered (which has a yearly fee) even recreationally (I hadn't seen that requirement before I bought (interpreted that as just being for commercial use).
Just an FYI for anyone else still tossing up between Mini and Air/Pro.
Getting one of these for the sole purpose of monitoring my roof/gutters. I have a two-storey, and you never know what those birds up there are really up to (nests under tiles, etc).

Where does it say you can't fly in "urban" areas. Granted the 5km rule around airports can impact. You just need to make sure you aren't :
"closer than 30 m to people — other than those helping to control or navigate your drone or
over or above people at any time or height"
At least in NSW, you can't fly in populated areas. Unless you're on acreage, I'm pretty sure any normal suburban area is off limits.

Got my kid one of these for Christmas. Never had a good drone before and was surprised how stable and easy to fly they are. It’s a lot of fun
