FB Marketplace Buyer Wants a Refund after I Sold Him a Computer That Is Older than He Thought

Hi,

I sold a computer about a week ago. Listed out the exact specs of the PC in the marketplace listing and negotiated with the buyer to get a final price. Showed him it working at my house and he was happy with it so handed over the cash and he took off the Pc.

The buyer messaged me today and said that he was unhappy with the system because he tried to upgrade the ram and it was ddr3 ram which meant it was older than the type of pc that he wanted (the specs in my listing photos detailed the ram was ddr3)

He asked me when I built the pc at my place and I told him that I built it “in this form” about 12 months ago which is true.

He just messaged me asking for a refund and I told him that I couldn’t refund him as there was nothing wrong with the pc and it should be suitable for his needs. He said he has my address and “we’ll see about that!” I just ended up blocking him.

Am I in the wrong or right here?

He didn't put built 12 months ago in the ad, he said that in person when the person asked. Personally, I think he basically filtered discerning people out by putting an outlandish price for old hardware, but there isn't much necessarily wrong about that - it's the fact that when the game was up, he chose to mislead. Everyone was with him until he revealed that part of the exchange and his justification that it was based on wanting the sale to not crash says it all. Up until that moment, it's fair game. Now it is grey and really a question of whether you're a decent person but a decent person, probably would not have said that in the first place. Still, he might have misunderstood the question.. Maybe. I hope so.

This guy has threatened you, go to the police, they may or may not door knock him and tell him to stfu

Don't let them tell you it's a civil matter, make it clear that you interpret the message a threat to your person and property

    • +2

A threat? No, good sir. The plan was to rock up at his house with a boombox blaring "Take Me Back" while standing in the rain.

  • +2

Like everyone else I disagree with the "built it 12 months ago" line. Should have been "refurbished 12 months ago".

FB Marketplace is full of morons. If you are stupid enough to still be using bloody Facebook then you deserve to be scammed. It should be criminal for people to be this stupid.

Are you going to be able to live without guilt now that ozbargain knows that you ripped off a kid? That PC is old az- as pointed out it’s got old guts and a 1060 in a close to new case. A few people would here think it’s ok. But you know how the majority feels about harvey Norman selling obsolete tech to seniors.

    • +2

Looking forward to see the OP post a photo with broken window or worst

  • +2

Wow $900 for 1060 on a 8 years old built PC?

F*@k me, you just hit yourself a jackpot.

"When a scammer sells an over-priced lemon to a bikie's son and now he is scared."

    What comes around goes around.

    • Nobody takes responsibility these days do they.

  • I always explain to people "it's an old car", "it's an old bike", "it's an old computer" etc… "I'll try and help you out as best as possible but no promises or warranties."

Most people buy whatever it is anyway, after all they've come to you.

He probably would have bought it anyway if you showed him a cool PC with LEDs that could play games, but the whole built 12-month ago thing has muddied the waters somewhat.

Maybe ask if he wants some extra DDR3 chucked into it, or an extra HDD to keep him happy. Might be all it would take to clear it up. See if you can clear it up without a straight up return of the PC. The longer he has it, he will start using it, save games, documents etc. he probably won't want a refund.

That or tell him to get f#cked, and yeah wait for a something through your window. Maybe multiple windows, until he feels things are even.

i reckon the buyer's mum and dad will come knocking on your door asking for a refund.

I sold the ram to this adult male, I told him that unless his pc is about 10 years old it will be DDR4, he assured me that he was told the PC was under 12 months old when he bought it; when he tried to fit the ram he messaged me about it with a picture of the ram slots on the MB, I could tell straight away that it was DDR3 and not 12 months old but more like 12 years old, he sent me screenshots of the ad as seen below, the CPU is from 2011, not 8 years old but 11, and you've just admitted to bending the truth to make the sale, and now he's also reading this post….

    • Nice, are you saying you are the above mentioned buyer sir?

      • +1

not me at all, just felt sorry for the guy thinking he had bought a PC that he thought was fairly new, which for $900 you'd expect; by all means, he could have done more research but he was still fooled by this guy saying built 12 months ago.

this my friend is the ultimate twist, brb grabbing popcorn

edit: on topic, dog move selling this ancient PC for $900 lol. I'd throw bricks at your house everyday if it was me.

edit2: nvm, this ad itself was difficult to read. Looks like the whole thing was misleading and deceptive from the get go. I'm surprised this post was even made.

      • The ad he posted was a verbose craptalk…

    • Well they listed all the parts lmao, that's clearly on the buyer mate, even the mobo model. And ripjaws ddr3 goes for $100 or more for a 16gb set

    • +2

      Wow…

And OP thinks they can run and hide…

Wow this is really scummy. Like Hardly Normal type of scummy. Excuse me while I run off to vomit.

    • I mean, should have maybe said 'refurbished' but its plainly obvious by googling the specs how old the parts are, which at the end of the day is neither here or there when they are spelled out in the ad that 'it was put together 12 months ago'. I've put up with this crap and won disputes on ebay because people 1. haven't clearly read the listing, 2. they are having a go. I wouldn't take back a sold pc unless it was clear it had not been altered at all

      • +2

OP was clearly purposely being deceptive.

        "Very relevant and current components"
        Bullshit

"You said the pc is about 12 months old yeah."
"Yes it was put together about 12 months ago"
        Scammer

And looks like OP was smart enough of a scammer to delete and move on.

    • OP is virtually lying

Of note OP has claimed buyer asked how old the computer was after the sale in the original post, then in the comments said buyer asked when he was in his house and then @K1w1-Chris showed us that buyer actually asked before buying and was scammed.

Hopefully, the guy gets a refund and the OP owns up before the police get involved; obviously, the OP knows he's done wrong as he has now deleted the post comments, thank you to the other posters that have now reposted the original post.

  • At least it is not a fire danger.

So, it would seem that this post didn't go entirely to plan for the OP.

I am the too trusting buyer in this case. I can assure you all, I am not a child. I am a bloke who takes people at their word and a handshake, not expecting to be deceived. I asked all the right questions and one of them was definitely NOT when was it built. It seems this person, likes to add a little bit of spin to make him seem a little more innocent. You see, I am old school…I like to think people aren't out to scam or deceive others, I would say 99% of you here are the same. I live my life and treat others how I want to be treated….but as you have all said….Buyer Beware. So here I am, with a PC that I was led to believe is 12 months old and I will need to upgrade a lot sooner than I expected. To be fair, the RGB light were pretty bloody awesome! They are a hit with my kids. Bright lights, flashy things….Squirrel!

I appreciate those who see this for what it is…I feel vindicated. To the OP, you know how to get hold of me, do the right thing. Do you really want this kind of karma hanging over your head?

    Thanks all.

    • You sound like a reasonable and kind person. I wish you all the best for you and the kiddos.

OP the ball is in your court to remedy the situation. Do the right thing.
