Cheap landline calls to the Philippines

My GF is from the Philippines is always calling home and costing me a bomb.

We have a gotalk mobile phone and we got a It's Green phone card.

The It's Green sounds cheap if you look at their ads, but it is actually a ripoff because they charge per minute for the 13 number you have to call, as well as extra fees.

Looking for ability to call Globe and SMART mobiles from Sydney cheaply…

  • From what I can see this is probably the best value if calling from Sydney.

    http://www.ozprepaidcards.com.au/cardDetail.asp?PhoneID=138&…

There are no BS charges after a certain number of minutes, on connection or disconnection, or just a cost per day.

Only come in $10 amounts, but seem pretty good…

  • Has she a computer? Skype wifi Mcdonalds small computer/ tab would cost $50 if finance is a problem think when married? with the same calls home, set a limit to the cost.

    love skype

  • If you're willing to consider changing mobile plans, on TPG mobile super value plans, international calls are included in the "included value". http://www.tpg.com.au/mobile/plans.php

    To Philippines: Flagfall = $0.35, rate = $1.89/min.

Let's assume (for examples sakes) your GF makes 4 x 30 mins calls per week.

    Cost per week = 4 * (30 * 1.89 + 0.45) = $228.60
    Cost per month = cost per week * 4 = $914.40

Then go on the $34.99 / month plan, with $1000 of included value, and the international calls are covered by the included value.

Adjust figures and plan as needed, so that you don't exceed the included value.

If you're only making local calls, LiveConnected is better value as a mobile carrier, but if you're making international calls (or want that option) then TPG is probably better, since it's not included in LC's included value.

Or, find the local number equivalent of the 13 number, and call that direct (can be cheaper on some mobile plans). Also both LC and TPG include 13 numbers in their included value now, but it's fairly pricey (around $1/minute last time I looked).

Or, just use skype, and pay nothing, but accept there'll be some dropouts / lags / etc. Also there are some standalone skype cordless handsets now, so you don't have to use a computer or smartphone, I think they're around $99, but don't quote me on that.

  • 3 suggestions i can share which i've already tested:

You can use Lebara prepaid sim,
Its about 12cents a minute for mobile, about 9 cents for landline.

Your $10 will be roughly 50mins on landline.

    1. Engin.com.au
      Its a voip service, $40/month
Unlimited call to Philippines landline only
Unlimited call to any landline or mobile phone in Australia

But of course this is not applicable for you cox you need to call mobile phone.

    1. Virgin mobile BYO $29 plan
I only pay $19/month coz i have my own mobile
It includes $450 cap for local or international calls
So @ $2/min and flagfall of 60cents??? (just google it)
Then roughly your $19 will give you roughly 3.5hours call to Philippines.

    Plus you get 250mb data/month.
Btw, this is a month to month contract, you can terminate anytime with Virgin.

    Call clarity is very good.

    I hope this helps.

  • three/vodafone offers free minutes every month on their cap plans, as long as you don't do hours a week, and keep a check on usage its a good option.

also look into Skype/Viber/GTalk/etc which have phone apps and desktop apps, then you can exploit your wifi at home, and the cheap data plans in the Philippines to get virtually free calls (video on these services can be pretty flaky with the Phils abominable network quality).

  • Call a Philippine cellphone UNLIMITED for AU$ 48/month fixed!

    • No internet needed.
    • No hidden/additional charges.
