What The Heck Happened to The 18650 Batteries' Stock?

Hi all.

Been looking to purchase a few extra 18650s to add to the collection, but my favourite Ebay seller is no longer selling anything and seems like there's nothing on Ebay at all, anymore (I'm excluding batteries located anywhere other than Australia, as I want local and quick deliveries).

Is there any new legislation or something that forbids 18650s from being sold in Australia or something?

Alternatively, do you know anywhere where I can buy quality 18650s?

Thanks!

  • The last time I purchased 18650 battery (a few years ago), I got them from Tech Around You.

Now I just harvest them from dead Power Tool/Laptop Batteries.

    • can you revive dead batteries that way?

      • You could, but it would require new cells + balancing the batteries voltages + a tack/spot welder

I usually just harvest the battery to use in other electronics (ie. torches).

    • Where do you get your dead power tool/laptop batteries? Hard rubbish?

  • I bought a good range of 18650's from 'Tech Around You', one time I bought from them I had a battery that was around 1.8V and they sent me a new one with no issue.

Alternatively I have also bought 18650's from 'LANplus'.

    Tesla took them….

I mean, are we living in Mad Max world already, and we're supposed to scrap things rather than having new 18650 available as we've always had?
I thought we had a few more years…

  • I just bought some recently from Vapeking? https://www.vapeking.com.au/samsung-25r-2500mah-high-drain-l… he has 1552 in stock and these arent clones/fakes

bought those a few months ago, look to be still in stock. those specific batteries are recommended for my use (vape) not sure if they are recommended for whatever you want them for, i spent a while researching before i ended up at those.

  • I bought a couple before xmas and was surprised too, that there didn’t seem to be many legit sellers on ebay.
From the links above, it looks like vaping is where they are going, so not quite mad max yet.

  • vaping and ebike community has rigged the market.

Alright, had a response from the seller I used to buy from.

Ebay has BANNED the sale of 18650 batteries, unless they're being sold with a device that will take them.

What an example of abuse and to those of us who are torch fans and heavy users, we're now screwed and forced to buy from other sources…

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone, I'll take a look at these stores for alternative supplies.

Don't worry you are not screwed just order and support the business directly instead of always giving eBay a cut

I bought something from this place on eBay - xerom.com.au - and they had a flyer in the package that said:-
"We sell a wide range of 18650 Li-ion batteries on our website"

  • Weren’t you the one leaving Australia?

  • They are banned unless they are genuine brands. You'll have to buy them from vaping websites, but they're the flat top ones though. If you want the ones for electronics and flashlights, you can find them on eBay or Amazon bundled with a flashlight.

FYI, I bought this one with 8 batteries few months back on eBay. Surprisingly, the flashlight is not bad.

  • Try these guys tinkertechau.com.au

  • I buy 18650 from Alibaba seller Shenzhen Vapcell [1] to build ebike batteries. The batteries I purchased have been reviewed by a battery tester reviewer [2].

I have also purchased pure nickel strip from the seller, which I tested to confirm not nickel plated (scratched up service and placed in glass of salt water to check doesn't rust). As well as a Sunkko 737dh spot welder, and some other battery building material.

Book I learnt to build battery packs by Micah Toll, who builds and reviews ebikes [3]

  • I think ebay pulled most of the listings because a lot of them are fake, and buyers ultimately go through paypal or their credit card company to get a refund.

anyway, my 18V bosch battery just died after 8 years.
I will try hard not to buy from ebay, Amazon has a problem because of the risk of lithium batteries.

I got some 18650 2200mah from Bunnings and DIY replacement in the same shell and they works!
